NRL Nines 2020

Surprised how some people are taking this. The matches are basically just pre-season trials, but with less players and less intensity.

It's like when you're at footy training, and in the last 15-20 minutes, you split the team into two and play a game - AKA the best part of footy training!

It's all about getting some fitness under the belt, having a bit of fun, and giving the fans a day out.

Half the team is missing FFS, and even then, we're not just going to turn into world beaters from round one. It's going to take some time everything to come together, after what has hopefully been a tough off-season, with a lot of planning and forethought.

I wouldn't be reading anything into the performances.

I can't believe people are unironically panicking about our performance in the Nines, lol.

The Eels won the Nines a few years ago and got the spoon in the real comp, it's so irrelevant.

The Eels "won" it in 2016 when they were one of the form teams of the competition before the salary cap drama engulfed the club and they had to gut their squad. They actually made Top 4 the next year before crashing to a wooden spoon a year later.

All the other winners either went onto have success (Cowboys, Roosters) or were in the middle of their victory lap (Souths).

I said this yesterday but I'll say it again: Calm down. It's the Nines. It is far more likely than not that the players had instructions not to take it too seriously, glorified trial match and all that. This tournament likely won't even exist next year so why does it matter now?

Melbourne didn't win a single game, should they be hitting the panic button?

Oh my gosh, those refs are going to be in all sorts of trouble. It didn't even look close to being in live.

I know it's only Nines but that is fair dinkem the worst referee clanger I have ever seen in my life. The ball was clean out by a good 5 inches.

I dont think its the performances that are bothering some people, its the effort on some of the plays.

That was Sharpe as the touchie wasn’t it? God she’s still awful with the flag. Just as bad as Cummins with the whistle

Even the teams that went onto achieve premiership success that year did reasonably well in the 9s, 3/4 teams at least made the finals with the Sharks only getting eliminated in the dying seconds of their pool game to miss out.

On the surface I completely agree that the 9s have no bearing, but the records paint a different picture. The closest comparison I can come up with is the different formats in cricket, it's not 1:1 but scenarios that play out in one form can lend themselves to others.

As far as fans being upset - let them be upset. BHQ captures the genuine emotions go through as they ride the rollercoaster and some of it can be pretty raw. That shouldn't stop anybody from taking a breath and expressing their own thoughts and opinions.

I'm starting to think we didn't really take it all that seriously despite sending over a decent squad.

Haas was running sideways in the first game and then stock standard hitups the next game
Fifi averaged about 1 run per half... if we were taking it seriously he should've been getting the ball a whole lot more

And just in general we seemed to be playing against what a normal nines game would have... barely any offloads, barely any expansive footy, against the cows we were giving away penalties inside the 10m (typical of an NRL game, but no way you give away extra sets in the nines). We didn't really fire a shot, but did we actually want to pull the trigger??

We did send a decent squad, but our squad isn't really that deep to begin with. We didn't go all out like the warriors and send over a 20's squad, but we did also include Parker.

Maybe as well we have overhyped the attacking prowess of some of these younger backs.

Agreed... I was going to suggest that we as fans think that player x, y & z will be a phenom and dominate the league, but I'm sure fans of knights, sharks, tigers, etc. are all thinking the same.

Should we really think Vudogo, Perese, Bullemor, etc. were going to come out and dominate. I think the more important thing is whether they can dominate the 13 man game.

It would've been nice to put some serious attacking play together, but if the worst thing to come out is a minor hammy to Milf, and maybe less media attention on our juniors then I'm not too fussed about being bundled out of an exhibition comp
