My parents are of a Russian/Ukrainian background, we moved here when I was little kid and I grew up poor too. People give me shit about it sometimes as a joke, and it doesn't bother me, it's always been the Australian way to make lighthearted fun of people.

Not to get too caught up in this debate but I would like to point out friends probably know your background and feel comfortable having a dig but a Australian born Russian/Ukrainian probably doesn’t get called “Borris” while minding his business waiting for a ride. Correct me if I’m wrong but most people on the street wouldn’t know your background and therefor couldn’t use it to insult you - unlike, for example, someone of asian appearance.

Absolutely agree , we should come down on the kind of racism being discussed HOWEVER we should call out double standards such as black people(poc)using black( poc if you prefer) racist slang terms and everyone being totally fine with it but all hell breaks if any other nationality dares utter such a phrase. It's as if it is impossible to use it in racist way if you are a poc but it CAN ONLY be racist when spoken by non poc. Like it simply isn't possible that a non poc could use it, not even when directly quoting a poc!!

Kyrie Irving gets praised for saying NBA history is all black and that the logo should be a based on a black dude. I mean, to me, this seems pretty racist, especially given the logo could be of anyone and the guy it is based on is a Hall of Famer.
