NRL TV Rights Deal

Just remember it is the NRL who supposedly care about crowd numbers ... Not the TV networks. They only care about ratings.

Maybe they thought a 6pm kick off would help their ratings as people may be less inclined to go to games at that time. Maybe they pushed for a 6pm kick off timeslot

Suncorp Stadium can’t legally host 6pm Friday night game

PROPOSED NRL games scheduled for Suncorp Stadium at 6pm on Friday night are not just unpopular — they’re illegal.
Stadium management say they cannot lawfully take a booking for the new timeslot being put forward as part of Fox Sports’ new broadcast deal because Suncorp requires full public transport capacity under the conditions of the ground’s development application.

Effectively, the state government will not allow 35,000 Broncos fans arriving by public transport on a Friday night as the CBD is emptying at peak hour for the weekend.

A letter explaining this was sent to the NRL on Thursday by stadium general manager Alan Graham.

Stadiums Queensland advised the NRL that games in the timeslot would not be able to be played at either Suncorp Stadium or Gold Coast’s Cbus Super Stadium.

The 6pm kickoffs, which would probably become 5pm during daylight saving periods in NSW, would not permit the number of dedicated train and bus services to move enough people into Broncos home games, who have averaged about 33,000 for each of the past two seasons.

“There are genuine concerns about this potential impact on patrons, the ability of Suncorp Stadium, Cbus Super Stadium and (Townsville’s) 1300SMILES Stadium to service patrons, the impact on hirers and also the heightened pressures on transport services,’’ a Stadiums Queensland spokesman said.

While Channel 9 would want most Broncos home games for one of its Thursday or Friday night telecasts during the next rights period, the NRL insisted in August that it had taken back from Nine the right to schedule its own fixture list.

Graham said Suncorp Stadium events were obligated to be staged at times when a public transport plan can be effectively put in place, with tickets carrying a right to free public transport travel.

“It makes it difficult to put the event on legally otherwise,’’ he said.
“The transport operators are telling us of their ongoing commitment to post-school and peak-hour commuters.

“We have pointed out (to the NRL) what all the practicalities and the legal circumstances are which we are required to have so they can make an informed decision on this.

“For a Friday night game, 85 to 90 per cent of people come by public transport. If you can’t provide public transport you can’t get the spectators here. ‘’

Like the three Queensland clubs, Stadiums Queensland and Graham say they know about plans for the timeslot only what they have read in the press.

These reports spoke of the 6pm matches for proposed Fox Sports telecasts being played in Brisbane, Auckland and Townsville — but not Sydney.

“We have been in touch with (Broncos CEO) Paul White because it’s important they know what our view is,’’ Graham said.

As well as the NRL clubs having flagged seeking compensation from the NRL if the new timeslot is introduced, stadiums and contracted caterers may also want compensation from the NRL.

The SQ spokesman said a 6pm kick-off at any of the three NRL venues in Queensland would “actively discourage patrons from attending’’.

“Even in Townsville, there is still a reliance on the a shuttle bus services to get Cowboy fans to the venue from the CBD and other parts of the city,” he said.

“Stadiums Queensland has let the NRL know of the issues this proposal will create at the three venues (Suncorp Stadium, Cbus Super Stadium and 1300SMILES Stadium) and subsequent impacts on hirers.’’

Probably not, I know the Courier Mail certainly don't before publishing this shit.

Although this article does have direct quotes from both Stadiums Queensland as well as the Suncorp Stadium boss

This is fucking hilarious. How do you Rugby League?

According to Stadiums Queensland, Lang Park isn't legally allowed to take a booking for 6pm on a weeknight.

Something to do with the terms of their development application with the state government and public transport requirements.

Does the NRL even do their research before agreeing to shit.

wtf are you talking about. I haven't seen anywhere that says the NRL have agreed to anything. All I've seen is News bullshit throwing crap out for the plebs to lap up, and the speculated value of the pay tv continually creeping higher and higher, once again to the shock of the plebs out there that lap up every negative story they can about rugby league.

I know, yet neither this article or the previous made up bullshit from the CM contains anything from the NRL saying they will be doing the 6PM games in QLD.

Well there is a news.com.au article out now that says it will be queensland and auckland for the 6pm game beause it will be too hard for sydneysiders to get to the game. Ffs.

New tv deal to be annouced this arvo apparently.

THE NRL, Fox Sports, Nine Network and Telstra are understood to have sealed a historic $1.8 billion agreement that confirms the game’s future until the end of 2022.

Amid marathon talks that went through Wednesday night and well into Thursday, the commission finally signed off this afternoon on the purchase of the Saturday night game by Fox from Nine for $35 million a year, or $175 million over the full five-year contract. This figure was reached after exhaustive haggling between the two parties.

News Corp’s global chief executive, Robert Thomson, flew in from the US overnight to finalise the deal that sees Fox retain Super Saturday, with three games to run that day culminating in the Saturday night game.

In a first for the game, there will also be a Friday 6pm game to be screened on Fox Sports,as revealed by the Telegraph earlier this month. The Friday night game has been a key component for Fox, which would televise those matches from Auckland and Queensland. This will ensure games held in the earlier time slot would also attract a crowd, because arriving early for matches on a Friday night in Sydney would be too difficult in peak hour traffic.

As part of the deal, Fox Sports will launch a 24 hour dedicated rugby league channel in 2017.

While the deal is for seven years from 2016 to the end of 2022.

It is understood the NRL has scheduled a late afternoon press conference to announce the final deal.

Insiders say the sudden coming to a head of the talks in the last 48 hours occurred after the NRL brought News Corp, Telstra and Nine back to the negotiating table this week.

Fox Sports will now screen five live games a round and simulcast all eight matches. Apart from the Friday and Saturday games, it will also now screen a Sunday 2pm game. The new deal has taken shape in the weeks since former league boss Dave Smith’s resignation last month.

Under the deal, Fox has formally given up its Monday night game, so it can retain the three Super Saturday fixtures.

Thursday night will now kickstart each round of the competition on Nine and Fox Sports.

The sale of the Saturday night game and the simulcast rights reduce the cost to Nine of screening NRL over the five year contract from $925 million to about $650 million.

If Fox Sports gets everything it wants, it is understood to have paid about $900 million for the rights.

It is understood telecommunications group Optus made a late play for the overall pay-TV and digital rights — in the wake of taking on the English Premier League rights for about US$45 million a year — but baulked at the high relative cost of rugby league.

Instead, Telstra will take the digital rights for what is believed to be about $150 million. Meanwhile, it is understood the international rights are worth between $75 million and $100 million.

Really hope the reports that Stadium Queensland won't allow 6pm games are true because friday 6pm is a fucking stupid idea.

I like the 2016 format better :/

It would be a monumental **** up if it happens.

The NRL will have to pay out of their ass in compensation, the crowd figures would drop and so would the ratings and most of the fans won't be able to watch their team live because most of the population don't have foxtel and the NRL app is garbage.. No family will want to sit sround a fucking mobile screen. A lot of them will be stuck in traffic anyway..

I hope it's all bullshit.

A 6pm timeslot won't work on a Friday.. Not in any place of the country.

6pm games on a Friday? Get fucked.

Conspiracy to quash the Broncos' legendary crowd figures!!!

Great to see a 3pm game on the Saturday I don't know if it's just me but an afternoon game has a better atmosphere than a night game for some reason. The 6pm game on the Friday is fucking stupid, little chance of getting a crowd in and it would attract **** all interest.

Conspiracy to quash the Broncos' legendary crowd figures!!!

But fox sports is showing it there is no way in the world 9 would take the best rating team of their network that brings them the ratings and viewers they crave.
