Knights only have him contracted for 1 more year, and it's supposed to be 1.2 over 3 with us. It could theoretically be something like 500K in 2016 and 17, and 200K + 400K from the Knights next year.

I may be mis-remembering but one of the things that came up when Boyd initially asked for a release was that the Knights would ensure he gets paid the full amount but his overseas jaunt with his missus changed their minds and they'd only release him if they were off the hook for any further payments.

thats exactly what happened (at least according to the media).

but if the $1.2 million over 3 years with us is correct, then they must be chipping into boyds contract, because i highly doubt that he is on 600k for the first year (the reported value of his Knights contract) and 300k for his second 2 years (assuming we are paying all of his contract (and knowing he must get 600k next season)

It's like I predicted Id say. Newcastle are chipping in because it's a saving . Public pronouncements can not be relied on and the sabre rattling from Newcastle was just piss and wind. WB would never have asked Boyd to do a job for him if he thought the Broncos would have to stump up big cash and we can finally put to bed the stupid notion that signing Boyd cost us Barba or any juniors. It seems as though WB knew we would be getting Boyd reasonably cheap, he probably knew Newcastle were willing to chip in.

Well, it only cost us 400 k a season which is absolutely no different than the season before and the season before that etc. Every year you buy new players and release others so you run the risk that you may lose some in order to buy new stock. It didn't cost us Barba as we had saved money with Kennedys release along with Hala,Hannant and Hoffman. In fact we have more funds as a result of those losses so nothing in a trading sense cost us Barba. We have more than enough money to retain any juniors we wish to keep and who wish to stay and play for the Broncos.

We must have saved a million a season when you add up those salaries even with the understanding that you may be paying some out. WB is getting the team he wants and plainly he didn't want Barba, in his eyes it is obviously not a loss and after a few rounds you may not be able to name a player you'd want dropped in favour of Barba. I can definitely see him offering more than Barba did this year, though to be honest, even Maranta would probably offer more than that. I don't really see him as a long term option at fullback though, though I dunno what Bennett's plans are. Hopefully either Taylor/Nikorima/whoever progress quickly and force him onto the wing eventually (before they are signed by someone else), where he's definitely very good.

I'm not looking for a reason to hate WB. He already gave me enough to dislike him...

The costs are not monetary, but Boyd having a mortgage on the Fullback position is what eventually saw Barba leave (and he was on Bulldogs money for another year, unlike some current reports say), and will probably see a promising youngster leave.

This isn't about Boyd's value as a player, but about the fact that he is under Wayne's protection, and as such, there is no objectivity from either of them.
As Barba probably did, as a youngster coming through, I would look at that and think... there's no way I'm coming in between those two, no matter how well I play, so I'm probably better off looking elsewhere for a gig.

Is it speculation? Sure, but everything that has happened so far, makes me fairly certain I am right.

All you are doing is talking dollars. Yes, players want money, more so now than ever before. But they also want opportunities. If your preference is to play experienced players like Boyd over chancing the careers of unproven talent, that's your choice, but to spout that "We have more than enough money to retain any juniors we wish to keep and who wish to stay and play for the Broncos" and therefore Boyd won't cost us juniors is just bullshit. Most players are not Ben Hunt, willing to be royally fucked over just to play for the Broncos.

Obviously I am very pro Taylor/Jikorima. You may not be, or think that because they are rookies they aren't worth putting the level of faith in that I am. That's a perfectly legitimate preference. But don't make out that this development hasn't impacted their pathway to a Broncos side.
