Opinions Thread

1. Locky

6. Wallace
7.Hunt

14. Smith.. Could he run in centre? Hodges Would get a break as well then

If Hoffman plays at fullback for the Broncos he will be the QLD fullback in 2yrs.

Yawnion must hold certain appeal to Slater. Look where he could play.

France: Home of his idol Cantona.
England: They're crap at World Cups.
Japan: Home of the ancient art of Karate.

IMO Hunt isn't anything special. Definitely not worth fielding an understrength 17 on game day. He is not in our 1st XVII.

You're entitled to your opinion. Even if you're entirely wrong.

Imagine if they didn't pick Langer for Queensland because he was "too short" or "over the hill" [icon_lol1.

I've stated my opinion before, I think there are probably half a dozen halves in his age group that are better.

That's beside the point though. How would you inject him into the game?

And how many of these half a dozen halves play for the Broncos feeder clubs or under 20's or have claimed to have won the inaugural 2008 Toyota Cup Player of the Year and named in the 2008 Toyota Cup Team of the Year? Man I just love how people on the forum get the shits about up and coming talent being let go by the club but then when it comes time to show the slightest bit of faith in that talent they do everything to avoid doing so.

+10000000

What's worse is when those people insult you for having faith as well. Really boils my blood how many people on this forum are so big headed sometimes.

lols, serious question but. How do you propose we fit Hunt into our 17? You either pray for an injury or hook one of McCullough (and have him play out of position), Locky or Wallace. It is not viable. If one of Locky or Wal get injured, Hunt is first man in. But other than that i cannot see why we should play with 16 men just so Hunt can get a token bench spot in order to entice him to stay a few more years. The Broncos have never done that so i don't see why they should now for a moderately talented halfback.

My opinion on Hunt is based on judging him compared to the rest of his halfback class. Rankin (younger), Foran, Pierce, Mortimer, Barba and Graham are IMO in another league to Hunt. Whilst there's not much between him and guys such as Lui, Henry, Kelly and a few others that don't come to mind atm. That's not poo pooing our young talent, that is just being realistic. How many players born in pretty much the same year can make it in the same position? It doesn't happen. I've got nothing against Hunt, but he is not the superstar in waiting that many on here make him out to be.

I'm all for giving young talent a go, I think you'll find I was one of the only fans of Setu and Taylor on here at early points last year. You will also find that I don't whinge and moan when it comes to letting talent go. I was all for letting Boyd go and am one of the few who maintains that was the correct decision for the club as a whole. Be careful you don't tar everyone on here with the same brush.

Hunt needs the time and it will show why we are so big on him, Also he is able to play at Hooker and has done so in the past as a Junior.

You know m1c I might have been a bit rough on you at first and for that I apologise, perhaps if you had of explained your position a bit more in the first place then it would have been clearer where your position on the subject matter was, I certainly think your entitled to your opinion on the subject so don't think I was trying to deny you on that.

If there's "half a dozen" in his age group better than him, clearly there's no halves because he was Australian Schoolboys and Junior Kangaroos halfback.

He's got wraps on him from Andrew Johns, Langer and Ricky Stuart, the 3 best halfbacks of the past 20 years.

but of course, m1c knows better :P

As I said, Wallace will probably miss the first month of the season. Hunt should play halfback for those 4 or so games. And he should be used as the bench utility in other games. Yes, he's not that flexible, but he can replace Lockyer as the game heads toward the end and the result is done. Or switch with McCullough and get some time at dummyhalf and share that with Wallace.

He needs ample first grade opportunities. He will be the Test halfback in 5 years. Guaranteed.

Of the names i listed as better than him -

Graham wasn't playing schoolboy footy therefor ineligible for the team. He has been a shining light for the Panthers for the last 1.5 years with no stable or senior halves partner.

Mortimer was also in the team with Hunt, and was a key factor in the Eels resurgence and march to the GF this year.

Foran was also in the team, went on to play for NZ in the tri nations this year.

Rankin is a 2 year Australian schoolboy - a rare feat. Also the 3rd youngest first grade debutant ever.

Pierce was also a 2 year Australian schoolboy and as we all know NSW rep.

Barba - Didn't Andrew Johns call this guy one of the best talents and natural footballers he's ever seen? I havn't heard Johns be so forthcoming in praise for any other player before. I also note that he kept POTY Ben Hunt out of the starting halves for the Toyota Cup team of the year in '08.

Barba is the only subjective one there. IMO the rest clearly have better CVs and performances than Hunt at this stage. Admittedly at this young age opportunities and the strength of the team around you play a large part in early success.

The halves class born in 89/90 seems particularly strong, I can't remember another stage where there were this many good young halfbacks around. As tempted as I was, not going to bite on the test halfback line either, sorry to disappoint. Agreed though, he should be halfback until Wallace is back.

There is 2 reasons those players you mentioned have done more then Hunt at this stage..

Lockyer and Wallace.

None of the guys you mentioned have players the class of Lockyer and Wallace signed to the same team as them. Hunt is also a Qlder so for QLD and Australia he has Lockyer and Thurston ahead of him. If he was at another club he would be playing first grade and have the experience under his belt by now.
