I honestly believe that Mcguire and Hala are the future. Im happy to not win a GF in 2010 or 2011 if i know these guys are given the chance to shine.
Indeed. I love McGuire's aggression and mongrel and Hala's strength. They will be great for us over the next few years, I really hope we don't let them slip like others in the past. As well as them we have the likes of Lui and Lingwoodock who are also guns and even Sims' bros.

McGuire honestly looks the goods. He gets pretty pumped and fired up at times and its good to see on a kid.

Some good points going on here - agreed with the "we should buy a player" but also agree there is no one out there worthy of buying!

I know this has said to death but we REALLY did let too many go. Too late now. I don't think we're being cynical - we're just realistically looking for the forward pack leader for those big game matches and we don't really have one. We need a X-factor forward and currently that is meant to be Thaiday (who is a gun) but let's be honest... he's no gun like GT was.

The Broncos of the 1990s built their success by SMART recruitment (when not politically motivated...*cough* Mundine *cough*).

Glenn Lazarus - 3 successive grand finals with the Raiders, the world's best prop, and the Broncos NEEDED to give their pack some grunt and respect. Perfect.

Darren Smith - a brilliant performer for Canterbury since his debut in 1991 or 1992, Broncos got him in 1995 and he was outstanding for the 4 seasons he was with us.

Gorden Tallis - partly political at the time, but he always wanted to play with the Broncos and he was one of the most ferocious back rowers, again at a time when the Broncos pack was unable to compete in the big games (bundled out cheaply in 1995 and 1996).

Iconic players. Players you can build your team around.

Nobody can seriously say someone like Joel Clinton was going to be a cornerstone you could build a pack around. Or Setu or Te'o or Sims in the backrow. Or Wallace at halfback (though he's been solid if not spectacular).

What's my rambling point? Well, unless there's a Lazzo, Gordie or Smith that's at their peak, looking for a new club, and will help our team lift to another level, then spend the money developing what we have.

We all acknowledge we could use some experience in the pack. As great as Kenny is, he's not ready to be the forward leader yet.

But go through the teams and think of players who really fit the description of what we want:
- Experience (club, finals and rep)
- Aura/reputation for being tough, uncompromising, damaging
- Mature - a leader, either current or potential
- Peak or reaching their peak - at least another 4 years in their career

To be totally honest, I can't think of any who I'd desperately want to get to the Broncos.

I understand where you are coming from Coxy, but I just don't know if there is that calibre of player in the game these days, those guys were still old school, the player of today is a lot different to that of the ninties - I've tried, but I can't think of that many going around these days that fit that mould - maybe Watmough???

That's exactly my point though. If there's only adequate players available, then do we really need them? Or do we bank on our own talent coming through?

Frankly the purchases of Sims, Clinton, Te'o and Setu have been monumental wastes of money so far.

i have hopes that 2010 Setu stands up.

He is the 1 player i really wanna see step it right up for the Broncos.

I agree on the first three, but Setu has potential. Dude could be a beast if he has a couple of props in front of him who can lead the way, allowing him to run two or three wider off the ruck instead of having to roll his sleeves up. Setu has the goods, it just seems that Brisbane, in recent times atleast, do no know how to foster a decent wide running backrower.

Plus he is the biggest hitter in the team. Bar none.

His alot like Dave Taylor in terms of how he is on the field except he trains his arse off and isnt known to slacken at all. Very passionate bloke.

When he doesn't rush up and miss, and look like a megadouche.

Well going by this it sounds promising... is he a very big bloke?

The more im thinking about it the more i wanna find a way to have Tim Smith in the A grade next season.

I've been thinking about it to. and i see three options that could be utilised next season

1. Lockyer
6. Wallace
7. Smith

or

1. Smith - Similar to what the Roosters want to do with Todd Carney and what we did with Lockyer when he first came into the top grade
6. Lockyer
7. Wallace

or

1. Beale/Kemp/Hoffman/Hodges/Yow Yeh
6. Lockyer
7. Wallace
14. Smith

this option we could use to give Lockyer some more rest during matches.

And all 3 options also result in:

B. Hunt >- North Queensland Cowboys to replace Johnathan Thurston.

That is likely true. there is also the possibility of changing the name Smith in all options (leaving him in the QCup as cover for injury) with the name B. Hunt. It all comes down to who the coaching staff rate higher.

And whether they want to gamble for the future, or gamble on an immediate premiership. Because as I said in another thread, I think Tim Smith would see 2010 as a chance to break into first grade and be able to shop himself to other clubs.

If the Broncos aren't careful, if they bank on him they could well end up losing Smith AND Hunt to other clubs.
