Opinions Thread

And if I may venture an opinion...I **** hate it when any player comes off contract, is released, or otherwise is mentioned as being available, someone on here wants to sign them. FFS, yes, there are some players that are worth considering. But most of the ones mentioned are not!

Amen to that. Some players people have been suggesting are completely mediocre.

+2 since Nings is the +1

I don't see how we can be as competitive with so little stock in the front row particularly just how inexperienced they are. I hope I am wrong but especially with Clinton going aswell we have 1 genuine full time front rower with decent first grade experience and that is Nick Kenny to go into a new season with so little depth there makes me think we will struggle to get into position to let our backline work their magic.

and im sure we can find a similar post to that from last yr as well. we will be fine. Even if we dont sign anyone else there are young guys ready to step up. yes front rowers mature slower. but in general players are Maturing alot faster these days then they did in the 90's

I hope your right but to lose Clinton and Taylor and gain no front rowers with first grade experience is certainly a major concern.

What i believe we need is just guys like Setu,Teo,Sims,Parker,Thaiday to stand up

yeah plenty of props there..

Im not claiming those players are Props. But we have a talented pack that a young Prop would excel playing with if just given a decent chance. Going along and buying a Prop from another club just because we have some spare money doesn't look after the clubs Future.

Nick Kenny can be our starting Prop his got the talent and the build. As well as giving guys like Josh McGuire and David Hala a chance to come from the bench will help to not only guide the Broncos through 2010 but set up the pathway for 2011 and 2012.

Those young guys will be to the Broncos what Webcke and Petro have been in the past. We cant just ignore them because we want a 2010 Premiership. We are The Broncos a team that has built itself in the past on producing its own superstars. We arnt the Bulldogs or the Roosters and i hope as a fan that we dont become that.

Well we SHOULD make the finals. We have the team to do it. In fact I'd say not making the finals would be falling short IMHO.

Whether we can match it with the heavyweights... we're probably one of the teams that would need the momentum like we did this year.

For us to win it this year we need "The Premiership That Faith Built".

Young guys given a chance to show what they have, And young guys who stood up and showed the fans what its like to spend your child hood dreaming of the day you become a Bronco and finally being given that chance to pull on that jersey and run out there with some of the best players in the world. I don't want 30yr old club jumpers who only show pride in the amount they earn.

There are young blokes running around the parks every weekend dreaming of putting on that Jersey, And i believe everyone who post on this site would have had that same feeling at some point in their life. A brought player doesnt have the same passion and drive the Broncos have been known for. You always put blood first dont you? And to some of these young guys. They are the Broncos blood.

Spare me the fairytales draggx, it doesn't always work like that. While the young guys get their chance to showcase their talents, they usually have someone experienced who is leading the way they can learn off. This coming season we have Nick Kenny and the rest are pretty much all juniors except for McGuire (I think). I feel there is a fine line between having faith and being overconfident...or even deluded.
And we aren't always going to have a team with ALL one club men, to expect that is just ridiculous. And just because they are lifelong Broncos fans doesn't mean they should necessarily be given a shot to pull on the jersey. Darren Mapp could have been a lifelong fan ffs but if we had a chance to swap a shit player for someone who is competent and can win you games, surely you would do it.

My concern is that we've let a lot of those older, developed players who know the Broncos culture inside and out go in recent years. The list is quite staggering when you look at it:

Shaun Berrigan
Dane Carlaw
Petero Civoniceva
Casey McGuire
Karmichael Hunt
Brent Tate
David Stagg
Brad Thorn

Then there's guys that have come to the club or only been in the top grade for a couple of years, given good service, then left before really establishing themselves in the Broncos framework:
Michael Ennis
Ben Hannant
Dave Taylor

Then there's the guys that have retired and are not really still involved with the playing group:
Tonie Carroll
Shane Webcke

Who have we replaced them with?
Ben Te'o
Lagi Setu
Ashton Sims
Joel Clinton (who's now all but gone anyway)
Peter Wallace

Those were rookies/just starting out (Setu, Te'o, Wallace), or have for several years been underachievers for their clubs (Clinton, Sims).

I don't see the point in jumping to secure someone like the above when they come on the market.

The Broncos of the 1990s built their success by SMART recruitment (when not politically motivated...*cough* Mundine *cough*).

Glenn Lazarus - 3 successive grand finals with the Raiders, the world's best prop, and the Broncos NEEDED to give their pack some grunt and respect. Perfect.

Darren Smith - a brilliant performer for Canterbury since his debut in 1991 or 1992, Broncos got him in 1995 and he was outstanding for the 4 seasons he was with us.

Gorden Tallis - partly political at the time, but he always wanted to play with the Broncos and he was one of the most ferocious back rowers, again at a time when the Broncos pack was unable to compete in the big games (bundled out cheaply in 1995 and 1996).

Iconic players. Players you can build your team around.

Nobody can seriously say someone like Joel Clinton was going to be a cornerstone you could build a pack around. Or Setu or Te'o or Sims in the backrow. Or Wallace at halfback (though he's been solid if not spectacular).

What's my rambling point? Well, unless there's a Lazzo, Gordie or Smith that's at their peak, looking for a new club, and will help our team lift to another level, then spend the money developing what we have.

We all acknowledge we could use some experience in the pack. As great as Kenny is, he's not ready to be the forward leader yet.

But go through the teams and think of players who really fit the description of what we want:
- Experience (club, finals and rep)
- Aura/reputation for being tough, uncompromising, damaging
- Mature - a leader, either current or potential
- Peak or reaching their peak - at least another 4 years in their career

To be totally honest, I can't think of any who I'd desperately want to get to the Broncos.

I'd take Jeff Lima in a heartbeat as a pack leader. Has the finals/big game experience, is one of the best props going at the moment and he seems to have a good head on his shoulders.

He's probably got the most potential, I agree. If he has another great year with the Storm then yes if he wanted to come, snatch him.

However, only thing I'm not sure about is how much of an off field (as in training) leader he is. Lots of those Polynesian blokes are pretty shy and not big talkers...that was one of Lazzo's best (and worst) traits...he had no problem telling you what he thought of you. Same as Gee, Webcke and Civoniceva.

To be honest, that's what some of our young blokes need. Someone to set them straight when they're coasting along and not showing heart.

Lima is often found out as being lazy on the field, so while I admit that on his day he's currently one of the game's best front rowers, he's not someone you can look to as a leader IMO.

lol who the hell is comparing him to Lazarus? Lazo is someone we will rarely see the likes of again. I'm just talking about getting a competent front rower and someone who can lead by example. IMO Lima would be good for that.

but that's my point. There's no point paying overs to bring a "competent" player to the club. If we're going to spend money on an established player, they should be a damn fucking good one. Otherwise better to spend money on our developing players.

Exactly.

In fact the only current front rowers who I'd even think about offering big contracts to at the moment are Ben Hannant and Matt Scott, who obviously aren't on the market and won't be for a couple of years yet.

Not to say I'd object to the likes of, for example, Lima, Tolman, Shillington to the Broncos, but as good as those players are, they are not players who you want taking up a large chunk of cap space. In a couple of years or so maybe, but you can't gamble on that in the modern game.

Lock in the young guys thanks Eddy!

I honestly believe that Mcguire and Hala are the future. Im happy to not win a GF in 2010 or 2011 if i know these guys are given the chance to shine.
