Our new halfback should be

**** Morgan off. If we are actually chasing him then Bennett should just retire now.

SAM Scarlett hails from the same bush town as Broncos legend Darren Lockyer and the pint-sized halfback is determined to emulate his childhood hero by calling the shots from Brisbane’s scrumbase.
Scatlett was only 11 when Lockyer returned to his home town Wandoan, population 665, to deliver awards at the Wandoan Wildcats’ presentation night.
A decade later, Scarlett has not forgotten the Lockyer legacy as he sets his sights on replacing Dragons-bound Ben Hunt in the Broncos’ No. 7 jumper next season.
The apprentice electrician provided spark to Brisbane’s backline against Ipswich last week and will press his NRL claims when he starts at halfback against Wynnum tonight at Kougari Oval.

Scarlett has been a standout in the Queensland Cup.
“It’s a massive year for me,” said Scarlett, who is off contract this season. “Everyone would love to put their hand up for Hunt’s spot, but I need to play well at Queensland Cup level first and see what happens.
“I need to go back to Souths Logan and try to have a good year for them.’’
Scarlett said he had learned a lot from Ben Hunt and five-eighth Anthony Milford.
“They are good blokes and happy to teach you a few tricks,’’ he said. “They are among the best in the game at what they do so it’s been good working off them.
“I feel I’ve got the ability step up and it’s my dream to play NRL. If I get the opportunity to play halfback for the Broncos, I’ll take it with both hands.”
Milford can certainly appreciate Scarlett’s talent.
Playing for former club Penrith, an 18-year-old Scarlett faced Milford’s former club Canberra and comprehensively outplayed the five-eighth whiz-kid in his under-20 debut.
At 176cm and 83kg, Scarlett may lack size but he possesses the heart that saw Lockyer outclass much bigger opponents.
“I’m from the same town as Locky and everyone back home is pretty proud of what he achieved,” Scarlett said.
“Locky once came to our presentation night for the Wandoan Wildcats. Playing a similar position to him, he was my idol growing up, so it would be nice to also wear the Broncos jumper in the NRL.
“I’ve always been smaller so I pride myself on my defence and I work hard on that. I don’t like people saying I’m too small, so I try to get up hard in the defensive line and hold my own.’’

Haha just chucking names out there
I rate him highly, having watched most of his games. Living close to Canberra, most people are Raiders supporters. They rated him highly
Anyway he signed with a pommy club I think

Yeah, Wakefield.

So, riddle me this. Does Boyd have any sort of kicking game?

When I started following the Broncos, Lockyer had already switched to 5/8 so I'm not sure what type of Fullback he was. Boyd seems to have the play making abilities with good vision and is great at setting up his outside men unlike some fullbacks.

I also realise that we are in need of a halfback and not a 5/8, so comparing this with the Lockyer switch is not exactly the same thing. My knowledge of the game is not in depth enough to appreciate the finer details of the difference between halfback and 5/8 apart from the obvious 1st/2nd receiver and halfback generally being the organiser.

So is it too much of a stretch to imagine Boyd making the switch to Halfback, assuming Milford stays at 5/8, or does he not have the requisite skillset (kicking?)? He seems to have lost a yard of pace so getting some young blood in at fullback at some stage down the line may not be a bad idea.

I realise that Boyd is the current QLD and AUS fullback, so it is probably premature to think of switching him. I'm just interested in what you guys think about the potential for some sort of out of the box switch like this?

Apologies if someone has brought this up already, I haven't read all 24 pages beforehand.

Boyd did kick through for Mead's try. I'd be interested to see him kick a little more in the attacking zone given our halves tend to kick into legs.

Boyd has a great short kicking game.

But I wouldn't say the same about the other types of kicks.

Our best attacking kicks do always seem to come from wider out- Boyd, Kahu and prior to that Reed.

Fox sports private Ryan thinks the broncos are going for a stop gap in 2018 ! And mentioned possibly moving Boyd . I think that he could be a solid 5/8th but I really don't see milf as a 7 . I hope we use a specialist 7 so milf can keep progressing , otherwise he may go backwards.

Media organizations have no idea and every week will have a new idea until Bennett reveals his plans

Yeah but neither do majority of us and we are here to talk about what is being said about these subjects.

Lockyer was THE playmaking fullback. When he made the switch he was already running the show with long kicking, short kicking, drop goals and firing 30m cut out balls left or right.

He just so happened to be best fullback at the time as well

We don't need a flashy number 7! We need a 7 with a good head on his shoulders, a good kicking game long and short and can defend well. We have Milford to create the opportunities. We just need somebody who can support him and take the pressure off a little. I'd prefer an older more experienced player.

We did the same in 06. We had Lockyer and all we needed was somebody to fill the gap.

Broncos forced the fourth lowest amount of drop outs. 35 compared to the Sharks 71. (In front of Tigers, Knights, and Dogs).

On the other side the Broncos conceded 26 tries from kicks or 31% of their tries from kicks.

We need someone more than just a "fill the gap" player ... because as good as Milford is he is no Lockyer.
