No mention of an 8 year deal.
GOLD Coast halfback Ashley Taylor has declared he is open to signing a 10-year mega deal like Jason Taumalolo’s to remain at the Titans for life.
The decade-long deal offered to Taumalolo dwarfed the eight-year contract offered to Manly halfback Daly Cherry-Evans when he reneged on the Titans in 2015.
It may not be the last time such a lengthy commitment is made.
On the way to claiming Dally M rookie of the year honours last year, Taylor extended his tenure at the Titans until next season and has started the season in hot form.
At 22, Taylor could play at least another 10 years in the NRL and said it would be ideal to lock up his long-term future.
“That would be a dream, to lock yourself up at a club like that,” Taylor said.
“The ultimate goal is to make sure you secure (the future), not only yourself, but your family as well. Being here is close to home. I’ve extended last year and I’d like to extend again.
“There’s some massive deals being thrown around. Ben Hunt (six years at the Dragons), Taumalolo, Cherry-Evans got a massive deal.
“It’s starting to become a common thing these days to lock yourself up for a long time. That’s just the dream for any player.’’
Taylor’s words should be music to the ears of Titans officials. He is contracted until the end of next season, so rival clubs are not allowed to launch poaching raids for 2019 until this November.
The Titans could sign Taylor to a long-term deal before he becomes a free agent, killing off any chance of the Broncos luring him back to Red Hill as Hunt’s replacement.
“That’s in the club’s hands,” Taylor said. “At the moment I’m just focusing on playing footy.
“If it comes around, it will come around. Until then I’ve got to keep playing some good footy.’’
Titans chief operating officer Tony Mestrov said the club would look to begin negotiations to further extend Taylor in the coming weeks.
“He’s a crucial part of the club moving forward, it’s as simple as that,” Mestrov said. “Of course we want to retain him. We’d love to see him play the rest of his career here.
“He’s really come back and shown maturity this season. Even when things haven’t gone our way, he’s still managed to dominate for us.’’
Taylor will run head-on into Johnathan Thurston, who he roomed with during the Indigenous All Stars camp, when the understrength Cowboys roll into Cbus Super Stadium on Saturday.
