Out of the 8, second year in a row... And we're in!

Re: Out of the 8, second year in a row

I think we can all admit that poor coaching has cost us this season.
Not a Hook "supporter", but I can't agree with that at all.

It made it harder than it needed to be, but coaching didnt lose us that game against the sharks. coaching didnt lose us the game against the roosters. coaching didnt lose us the titans match. coaching didnt lose us the roosters match. coaching didnt lose us the panthers match. had we won even a single one of those we'd be pretty much in the 8 for sure. 2 and we're sitting in the top 4. thats not the coaches fault, its the players'.

Apparently to some people on Facebook, Broncos beating Knights proved that Hook is a better coach than Bennett.

well bennetts 3 wins from 14 matches against us since he left doesnt exactly look good, nor does his 3 years with the knights. it certainly doesnt prove that bennett is a better coach than griffin, thats for sure.

The worst thing that happened to us this season was that around about round 8-9, the refs stopped caring about quick play the balls. The opening seven rounds or so were quite fast from memory, which suited us perfectly.

I don't know why the refs decided to ease up on the ruck, I've always hated the way they have "directives". They last for 5-10 rounds, until the media start to whinge about something else, and then we get a new "directive" and the old one's forgotten.

So, Cronk plays his 250th game this weekend.

Whenever any of the big 3 reach a milestone, they tend to go up another gear and win that game. Both Slater and Smith won their 250th..

Re: Out of the 8, second year in a row

I can think of five things that standout this year that I believe contributed heavily to Hooks dismissal and the Broncos probably missing the eight.
1. Playing Parker out of his Dally M position.
2. Playing Oates out of his 2013 try scoring position and placing him in the forwards prematurely.
3. Playing Hoffman out of his 2013 try scoring position.
4. Persisting with Hoffman in a position he was obviously incapable of managing.
5. Misusing the bench and not playing the game with all 17 players

I know many of you will argue that Parker plays the same so save yourself the time, I get that is what you believe. I also get that some were calling for Oates to go into the forwards for 2014 but I wanted him in the centres or staying on the wing for at least another season. I liked the idea that if it wasn't broken, you wouldn't fix it. Our two best tryscorers were placed in new positions and their replacements didn't find the line as often.

no, the worst thing to happen to us this year was losing to wooden spooners cronulla after leading 24-0 at half-time. if we won big in that game, we'd be in the 8 right now

Agree with the gist of it.
My issue is not where Parker plays, as he did play the same, but who we played at lock... although I don't think Hook had too many choices.
Of course Hoffman and Oates played the same position, as the latter replaced the former when he went back to fullback.

Points 4 & 5 are for mine the main reasons for Hook's demise.

I can't agree with this at all.

If a player has a shocker or more, the coach deals with it. A good coach brings out the best in his players. If they don't or can't respond they get dropped - Kennedy springs to mind which Hook did deal with, but Hoffman? His selection was a coaching issue in that the coach makes the team selection, which is a part of coaching. That selection cost us dearly.

I reckon Reed's sudden lift in form is, as others have observed, a direct result of Barba playing a proper role as 5/8 on the left. Reed (and Glenn to an extent) now actually has some room and is enjoying himself and with rather good results

Most of our losses, for mine, displayed a pattern - we couldn't control the game when it mattered, and that is a team issue, which is a coaching issue. A good coach analyses patterns, and then deals with the bleeding obvious - or doesn't, or can't, in which case he resigns, or, as was the case here, gets sacked.

And we still still have the one major issue we have had all season, sometimes more, sometimes less, specifically, our defensive line speed which will bite us on the bum big time in the next 2 games unless the coach addresses the bleeding obvious slow line speed and often fragmented defensive line.

It certainly bit us on the bum v Souths, and the Cowboys showed exactly what good defensive line speed achieves when they flogged the Rabbits and contained Reynolds, Keary, Burgess and Inglis - in their faces for the full 80. Damn good coaching there.

Agree with pretty much everything but would like to highlight this point. Most of our losses do follow a pattern - namely, we had the game in the bag with only a few minutes left. I agree we couldn't control the game when it mattered and it was definitely something that needed to be addressed because it happened so frequently. . .

. . . except that bloody Sharks game. I need to let it go I know, but Griffin gets a free pass on that one. Leading by such a big margin and with 20 minutes to go there are absolutely no excuses. If the players wanted it badly enough they would've held on and found a way to win. Simple as that. Does Griffin deserve a lot of the blame for this year? I suppose so but let's not let the players get away scot free. That's BS.

Re: Out of the 8, second year in a row

So we sack one coach because he couldn't get the best out of his players, for another coach who resigned because he was getting even less out of his players?

Its a coaches job, sure, but ultimately it comes down to the players. They lost from 20 in front, no amount of bad coaching causes that. Same way we just smashed Newcastle - it wasn't griffin who did that, it was the players. The coach picks a team, sets a game plan, then its up to the players to play the game.

There's a theory doing the rounds that at half time in this game the boys walked into the sheds slapping each other on the back, feeling very chuffed about the way the game was going. Hook however, was not very happy and was frankly disgusted with how "mean" we were being "Just give them a chance guys....we don't want to be known as the bullies of the competition. It's not whether you win or lose, it's how you play the game and currently, you guys are being very unkind"

I may have consumed a little alcohol when I first heard that theory, but I believe it.

I wonder where you heard this well constructed theory?

Re: Out of the 8, second year in a row

Can someone please tell me how many top 8 teams we have beaten this yr

Even the worst coach in the world wouldn't be that stupid ... and if you don't believe me, then go and ask Ricky Stuart.

...I don't know what to say. Honestly didn't think anyone would take that seriously tbh.

I was joking too ... just used it to have another dig at Stuart

Re: Out of the 8, second year in a row

Imagine how the season might have turned out if we had started with Hoffman at fullback, Barba at 5/8 and Oates still on the wing with Parker staying at lock. Surely it would have been better . Might have had Vidot,Hodges and Copley sharing the centres with Reed either dropped or in and out as well. Need a rewind button ! I'll bet if Griffin had one he would have done things differently and definitely would have gotten Hoffman out of 5/8.....maybe back when almost all of BHQ could see the failure of Hoffman.

Re: Out of the 8, second year in a row

Broncos defence would have been even worse and half the board would be bitching that Oates isn't being developed properly.

You're welcome.
