Re: Out of the 8, second year in a row

Glenn is an interesting one. He has very little competition for his spot on the left.
I see him as an ideal bench player with utility value. I would try Gillett on the left and see how he goes. Oates is definitely a right edge player who runs great lines from out wide

Assuming Barba stays at 5/8th, do we really want Gillett there? Unless his defence improves MASSIVELY, he'll continue to shoot out of the line and leave Benny stranded with only Dale there to help. In saying that Barba showed he has a pretty good defensive game on Friday.

On Glenn, I'm willing to see how next year goes with him hopefully being used other than a small battering ram. But until, like others have said, he starts using some ball-playing or offloading or gets some decent line runs, I don't see his value personally. On the bench at most.

Can we **** Thaiday off? I'm sick of him. People will disagree, as is their right, but if you think he's been in the top 5-8 players consistently this year then we're clearly watching different games. He's on a sizeable pay cheque and is not coming close to it performance-wise. He's overweight and therefore lazy. No mongrel in him, content to take the first impact and drop to his knees. Pointless to get a quick play-the-ball if you only make 3-5 metres per run at only 10 runs a game

Re: Out of the 8, second year in a row

Thaiday has been mostly ordinary since 2011. Sure, he's not the "worst", but he's playing far, FAR below what his profile, rep record and pay check suggest.

If only, if only.
No brain fades against the Roosters and Sharks and we are sitting pretty near the top of the table.

That is the frustrating thing for me out of this season, there are probably four games that we genuinely should have won and we would be in this season up to our eyeballs.

I fear however, that we are going to fade out again and we will miss the finals (again), and fundamentally it seems to be due to poor coaching and poor team selection and structures and very poor use of the interchange. Not kicking Hook when he is down because I do like him but just calling it as I see it.

I think there is a good coach there somewhere trying to get out.

Re: Out of the 8, second year in a row

Yeah I agree, for mine there's only a few games we didn't have a real chance of taking out so far this year, and definitely more than one or two we should have closed out. IF we had, we'd be at the business end and depending on how many of those we won, could be knocking at the minor premiership. Instead, we're all sweating on missing the 8 - again. It's a measure of how compressed the majority of the table is again this year, but also a measure of what could have been. I think we are a far better team than what I expect our finishing position on the table will show, which makes the team underachievers and makes me cranky and upset.. I don't give a damn what the pundits were saying at the start of the year about where we'd finish. We could be at/near the top. We damn well should be, every year :P

I like to think we are a better side than Panthers & Cowboys.

Definitely underachieved this year. Hopefully that changes next season.

Re: Out of the 8, second year in a row

One thing - I wouldn't call this a late season fade. If we lose all our remaining games lets not forget that 4 of them were against like 4 of the top 5 teams + Melbourne who are right up there on their day.

If we hadve won the games that we should have if not for stupidity on our part, id say we'd be pretty much were we should be given our players and their prolonged form - mid-table, bottom of the 8. We need to cut the dead weight in a couple of high profile players like ive been calling for for 3-4 years at the least, and aggressively go after some actual top tier players on form, not on reputation.

I cant keep up with bhqs general opinion of players though lol. A few weeks ago I was arguing with people who were claiming thaiday was in the top 3 forwards in the game based on form, and that Gillett was one of the best players and that he just has a minor defensive problem sometimes, now people are calling foe their heads for the same reasons I was told I was crazy for lol.

Re: Out of the 8, second year in a row

what's our record post origin for the last 3 years? i think we've won one game after the rep season lol. pathetic really, yet some players believe they'll be playing finals.

2012: 2-7
2013: 4-1-2
2014: 1-3*

We had a fairly cushy run home last year though.

we've never really handled the post origin period. even as far back as the early 00's we were constantly losing 6-8 games straight after the origin series. the only difference is that we had guys like Lockyer and Webcke to lead us to the top of the table and get us enough points to qualify for the finals (oh, and the comp was nowhere near this close)

That is another key issue aside from poor coaching. We need a leader on the field who actually leads by example, but also by being able to organize the side, which thus becomes a catch-22. You can't really lead and organize if there is no structure around which to organize.

As for being out of the 8, with the talent in this team, we should be in the top 6

if we were able to close out games, we'd be in the top 4... 4 of those games we lost at the death we should have won. and if we had a proper 5/8 (at the time), Hunt had a little more experience at knowing how to close out games and our defence was a tad better. who knows.

the point is we're not that far off being a serious contender

The truth of this post makes me both so sad and angry
