It pains me to have to keep explaining this but headlines are written and rewritten by subs, not the journalists who file the copy. An hour later, the headline now reads "Broncos have told star he needs to leave." Elsewhere (front page) it reads "Milford misery over as Broncos release $1m man."
You can accuse this of being clickbait, but I don't have a problem with that unless it completely misrepresents the body copy. You'll see this routinely in the Travel section, which like all travel sections, is advert masquerading as matter.
For what it's worth, I think using the term "release" is borderline misleading. It's skating on the edge. Cheeky rather than dishonest. But there's no crime in shepherding readers through your pages with sharp headlines and straps. It's an art-form I admire.
