Payne Haas Arrested

quotes from Payne Hass' Lawyer Campbell McCallum

“Payne was enjoying a night out with his wife having dinner and a few drinks,” Mr MacCallum told The Courier-Mail.

“What a lot of the public don’t know is that Payne’s older brother (Chase, 21) passed away last year and Payne has been struggling with a huge amount of grief over this.

“The passing of his brother added to the pressure of being thrown into the limelight with his rapid rise to rugby league stardom was bubbling to the surface.

“He has a big family support system but his wife describes him as shy and the type of person who “bottles up” his emotions.

“His partner describes Payne as a gentle giant at all times at home and the reports of a domestic situation included in the situation are completely false.”

Mr MacCallum said Haas and Ms Mohenoa were sitting and talking ‘and Payne was upset’. “His partner was consoling him and trying to settle him down as all of his emotions spilt over,” he said.

“Police were in the area and attending to a wild incident (brawl) about 20m away which had nothing to do with Payne.

“The police approached him out of the blue and started firing questions at him. Payne was in a heightened state of emotion, confused and being confronted with many police officers. “What transpired after that will be the subject of further enquiries but he is devastated, as is his partner, that inaccurate reports of a domestic situation was occurring.”

Sounds like something happened, going with the sympathy play already. Very carefully worded statement that.

**** me, that's a pretty dreadful statement. If that's the best they could do for him then the poor bloke is likely screwed.

I'm guessing he was a Broncos appointed lawyer because he's pretty clearly out of his depth and that's exactly the kind of people we love in this organisation.

Why would they mention dinner and a few drinks unless alcohol was relevant to the subsequent incident?

So Payne Haas is being represented by a lawyer who is currently facing charges of money laundering, fraud and numerous drug offences..

Sounds police stuck their sneck in when there was no need for it and Haas told them where to go. His wife is adamant that there was no domestic happening, rather pent up emotions were spilling out.

Yes that is exactly what it says but no domestic does not equal nothing happened. The wording that there were emotions coming out and what happened after won't be discussed is significant.

the same lawyer that has represented Greg Bird and those Titans players caught up in the cocaine scandal a few years ago.

also the lawyer facing his own charges of money laundering.

I'm pretty sure he has also represented many players at judiciary hearings.

Yep, sounds very much like someone the Broncos would be keen to work with.

Clearly the Haas family are missing a few screws.

"We need a lawyer" "let's get the bikie lawyer facing criminal charges, what can go wrong?"

we're not the only club that works with him ... he works with half the clubs in the league.

besides, Payne Haas can have any lawyer he wants

Paul White tells a different story:

“There’s no excuse or tolerance for that type of behaviour. There’s a big lesson for Payne and he needs to own that but there’s a big lesson for the entire playing group. We’re after actions not words. He was alone and acted alone in this instance and he made a really poor decision."

“He’ll have to suffer the consequences for that. We’re not just jumping straight to what a sanction might look like. We’re looking at what are the opportunities for learning right here and right now. Too many times, you deal with a sanction and think that’s it.”

We had an incident-free pre-season. The players returned from the Christmas break in good shape and things were tracking well with our roster in good shape. Anything like this is a setback and we need to own it as a club. First and foremost, Payne needs to own it. Kevvie (Walters) will be part of that process.”
