The Brisbane Broncos and Payne Haas’s management have agreed to put contract discussions on hold until the completion of the 2022 NRL season.

Haas is contracted to the Broncos until the end of 2024 and the club is committed to working with Payne and his agent to help map out the next phase of his career.

Broncos CEO Dave Donaghy said, "Everyone at our club holds Payne in the highest regard and we feel it very important to have these confidential conversations at a time of the year when there are no distractions."

“Payne has been a big part of our club for a number of years and we are looking forward to welcoming him back once his State of Origin duties conclude.”

Haas also acknowledges that he wants to keep his focus on the field.

"I underestimated the public interest in my contract situation so want to put those discussions on hold and keep my focus where it needs to be," said Haas.

"I want the fans to know that they will get nothing but my best every time I pull on a Broncos jersey."

It’s the best move that can be made really. Say that you are staying and everyone now can move on and I imagine there’s been somewhat of a gag order too so that the team is not destabilised, though whether Haas is actually smart enough to stick to it, one would have to wonder.

As others have said though, he won’t be at the club next year, expect something to happen in the relative quiet of off-season. And also expect some re-signing news in the next couple of weeks now of other fan favourite players. Hopefully starting with Cobbs.

Even if he sees out his current contract, I would not expect him to extend beyond his existing contract so if I were the R&R team I would be preparing for this.

I really like this move by DD and ikin. By saying "we will discuss it at the end of the year" it does a few positive things for us..

1. Puts it to bed for now so the players can focus on this very active and positive year

2. Keeps him in the shop window so that his delusional dream stays alive to keep him motivated to keep him playing at his best for us AND to say to any rivals "show us what you have in exchange"

At the end of the year we either say see out your contract, we have something that suits us better so cya, or here's an extension option take it or leave it...

Excellent, now I'd really like the focus back on our great form.

Leave contract talks to our now well managed head office.

One thing I do believe from Haas is he will genuinely give 100% every time he plays, and we've got a chance to actually threaten this year so we shouldn't waste it.

If he moves on in the off season, good luck to him that 800k will be really handy, if he doesn't we have the best prop in the game, either way the club wins out of this.

Remarkably well handled by DD and Ikin. This would've been a circus for months under the old guard.

Devils advocate but what was the true management here - telling a contracted player no further discussions would be held until November on a re-price of an already re-priced Agreement?

A few things.
  • Well timed press releases in the public domain.
  • Gentle roasting of Haas and his mgmt.
  • Not buckling and letting him walk or kick stones.
  • Wrapping it up with a final press release that takes the heat off everything.
  • Managing to cool the jets and didn't let it spiral out of control.

It was all handled pretty quickly... not necessarily a final resolution... but the subtle jab of "confidential conversations should be held at an appropriate time"... was a big **** you to the management and go sit back in your corner.

I very much think they will look to move Haas on now... unless there is some massive u-turn in the supporter base towards Haas I think the damage done by the management is near irreparable. Although pushing to the end of the year can give the admin some time to get an idea if the relationship between Haas and the fans is salvageable.

He can say that he'll give his all for the jersey every time he puts it on, but he just tried to walk out so how can we believe a word that he says now.

If they are planning to move him on at the end of the year, then pushing it out gives the broncos R&R team some time to make plans of their own, such as locking down our middle forwards like Flegler, Kobe and Patty, if we know Haas is out the door.

Bottom line - that last week has pissed the majority of the supporter base off and left Haas and to a greater extent his management looking like absolute kitchen sink lunatics.

None of them expected the fierce blowback that confronted their amateur games. Hope his deflation rears it's head in the origin match so he's fired up for his first game back for us.

I strongly expect that DD and Ikin are already making plans to move Haas on as soon as the time is right for our club. Nothing more fired up than a spurned lover and let's face it Haas has been advised by his management to cool it FOR NOW because they totally mis-read the room.

I'm sure these clowns will already be planning their next move to destablise the club and get their pound of flesh.

So long as they're still able to be connected to our club I'll be feeling a tad uneasy.
The funny thing is if he approached this at the beginning or end of the season (and with a bit more tact) he might at least have walked away with fans who still admired him.
Finishing this season in the finals after the last couple of years would have made him also capable of chasing more money OR a team of his preference (but definitely not both).
As it is, he has pissed away most of the good will he has spent years building, for what?
He will probably still go down as one of our best props in recent memory but he should not be expecting any endorsement deals from anyone in brisbane for a long time if ever.
I think it only dawned on him, hearing those boos, what a truly collossal clusterf*ck of a move that was asking for release, let alone announcing it to the world.
I am one of his admirers of his work on the football field but nothing short of a winning grand final with him the MOM will undo the feeling of contempt i have his actions now.
If he gets through this year with us, and we finish well, i would entertain him going anywhere else PRIVIDED it doesnt cost the broncos 1 cent in salary cap. And if he wants to continue after that he best get on his hands and knees and grovel to the people who through their support pay for him to enjoy the sport he loves (the broncos fans) with a genuine heartfelt apology for the hurt he had caused.

Can I borrow your crystal ball?
ha ha, yeah...just seemed the logical result for all parties when emotion is taken out of it.
Funnily enough though, I think the emotion of the boo's and public fallout were a big part of the turnaround.

great leadership shown by the Bronx management...well done!

It would be hilarious if his management has actually withdrawn the request for a release... all they've managed to do is absolutely destroy their client's credibility.

Remember though that his management…. Cut no corners?

If they wanted to absolutely obliterate their clients reputation, they definitely didn’t cut no corners in that pursuit. They achieved that in record time. And they also caused all this for zero gain. Bravo.

I think prospective clients would think twice about signing with this train wreck of a mob
