NEWS Payne Haas retracts immediate release from Broncos then

If any of you needed yet another example of why you should top taking journos salary cap gossip as factual, all you have to do is watch Riccio on 360 on tonight’s episode

Riccio in May 2022 “Haas will be on $850,000 next year which would make him the highest paid Bronco at the club”

Riccio in March 2022 on the same show “Lot of pressure on Reynolds to perform with his $1.2 million salary”

TLDR

$850,000>$1,200,000
I don't take much notice of these literal numbers - they don't know - but at lot of these discrepancies stem from the payments being tiered over the contract period.

If they report Blake Mozer has a 30 million dollar contract over 3 years, that might be 20 dollars year one, 40 dollars year two, and 30 million year three (rounded to the nearest million). Older players might have these tiers stepped down, while younger stepped up.

So a journalist might say Blake is on a 20 dollar salary or a 10 million, neither being right, but the source might be. Zerotackle's contracts do the latter and divides the contract evenly, so if that's your source, you're going to get into arguments with someone whose source expresses it in the tiers.

Another thing to watch are round numbers (easy to express and recall), and rounding terms like "upwards of," "around," "at least," "approaching" etc. Someone will hear Payne is on a million, because that's an easy number, while the actual amount might have a decimal point.

These sports journalists aren't forensic accountants. They're gossip columnists and talking heads. I've never met a journalist - outside of tech reviewers - who studied maths past junior.

The easiest way to settle this argument about which club is the biggest bunch of spoilt brats, is to look at the table.

Broncos > Roosters. QED.

Yes I won't disagree that the property market and indeed the cost of living in Sydney is more than in Brisbane. But the point I'm suggesting is, that if a player in Brisbane, whose earnings were $800,000 a year, was considering playing for a Sydney club I.e Roosters, he may not factor that in when choosing wether or not to do so.

Cost of living to me, is putting fuel in a car and food on the table,
Not buying a Ferrari.
Not rent or mortgage which is more then any of those things?

I keep hearing this best prop line .
He makes a lot of metres yes . But is not the best tackler or best off loader or score the most tries for a prop . So how is the best prop in the game measured ?
A props primary role is to make metres and make tackles. He was a liability on the goal line defensively a few years ago(I remember making a thread that went down like a lead balloon) but he has fixed these issues up mostly. Haas is the best prop in the game, as much of a moron he is.

The only way I see this calming down with the fans is if he extends his contract. Saying he will honour his deal won't stop the boos straight away like an extension would. Realistically his management have noticed the brand damage this stunt is causing, and likely drying up his TP opportunities. Not many businesses would want Haas on a poster or TV ad representing them at the moment.

There is a real lesson learned here today and I don’t think anyone will be so quick to underestimate the incredible enormity of Dave Donaghy’s sack

So what player/s will we be getting off the Roosters when he signs with them.

I think he is a fine player .
I also think he has a way to go before he is the best in his position . Getting to the ground quicker , offloads that lead to tries and more aggression in defence are areas I think he can improve .

Seeing Patty Carrigan nearly chop a bloke in half with a legit clean tackle a few weeks back reminded me how passive Haas is in defence . Hugger , not a hitter .

Who is a better prop? Haas is elite at what he does, and is even more valuable with the minutes he can get through helping the teams rotation.

Qld teams and Melbourne will always have more than Sydney teams, not a good guage imo

Looks to be a power move by DD and Ikin, makes a lot of sense. Time is on the Broncos side.

From the point of view of Haas, he's chasing what could be called luxury money for his position, which he may well get. On the flipside he's turned down a long contract extension on strong dollars... The downside is potentially large in this scenario for him, what happens with a bad injury or drop in form?

It doesn't make any sense to me the way team Haas have dealt with this situation, the brand and reputation damage will take some effort to recover and I don't see the upside benefit being worth the risks they have taken.

Haas hasn't even been the best middle forward at the Broncos this year, let alone in the entire NRL.

Glad this fire has been put out for now, but am confident that DD and Ikin are working behind the scenes to move on from Haas after this - as they absolutely should be. He's not worth the money he wants and with the way he has behaved now, he's not the type of player you build your team around.

We will be quietly shopping him, looking for alternatives and the moment a solid spine player comes up I hope we tell Haas that his release is granted, good riddance and use his money to upgrade our spine.

I just thought I would see who has had the most over the last five years. It's interesting.

. The point has always been that living in Brisbane gets you an extra 0 in your bank balance because houses/rent are half the price. (Just ask Reyno)
Sorry but my point is whether a player on $800,000, i.e. Payne Haas in this case, would consider the ”cost of living in Sydney” would prevent him from leaving the Brisbane Broncos and join the Roosters or any other Sydney club.

I am simply suggesting, in my opinion, it would not. With respect I will leave it there.
