NEWS Payne Haas retracts immediate release from Broncos then

Payne says - If someone writes something people run with it. They don’t base it on facts. I’ve offloaded the most of anyone in our team.”
According to Champion Data, he averages 1.2 offloads a match behind teammates Tom Flegler (1.83) and Pat Carrigan (1.63).

The facts - Season offloads note Payne has played more games.
Flegler 14
Carrigan 13
Haas 13

He was talking about total offloads throughout his career.

When you read the article that has the interview, he's talking about the knock on him has always been that he doesn't pass or offload enough (the media reference). When you tally all of the offloads, he has offloaded the most of anyone in the team with 64 offloads.

Totally agree regarding the club, but again "that's business", right? The moral decay was not directed solely at Payne, but rather at the current state of professional sport.

In the case of Payne and the Broncos, one has to wonder at the way in which the off-field indiscretions are handled in a societal context. Payne's mother assaults people, the police say to one victim to drop it and she'll buy you a new phone. How much of that has to do with the Broncos?

Is one person who can play sport very well actually above the law? If we accept that in our sports, do we accept that in other areas too?

To your point regarding players and their treatment following injuries or poor form; Well, as I don't like that art is commercialised outside of live performances, I'm against these contractual situations in any case. However, I'm also about people's right to choose, and I think that players should be aware of what ills might befall them in entering this "profession". In any case, I think they should have a backup plan that should be subsidised by clubs if they're going to run professional outfits as duty of care. Especially if they're going to recruit children.

In terms of players coasting, that is a pitfall for any employer. If they want to run a business built on other people's talent, they should be totally aware of those risks.

The issue for the club is when they should break a contract for indiscretions and players purposefully angle for release in order to get a release. Contracts should have clauses that stipulate the required behaviour of employees and clubs and players should both abide by them.

Payne did nothing wrong. I agree. He was within all his rights. However, his management used the media to play this out and should be investigated and fined for brand damage. Payne should also, but he probably won't. Payne has indeed been very good in his performance, but off-field has been poor.

In the end, I think the whole release fiasco played out as it should have. I think the club should probably move him on and seek professionalism. I think the NRL should reward professionalism in clubs and support good systems before they continue trying to expand.

My issue with the NRL is that it is clearly a slave to money. Poor clubs in a capitalist enterprise should theoretically fail and not be supported by richer clubs. Taking this further, good clubs should prosper and grow and introduce second teams. However, the NRL fight the market and because of this allow indiscretions to occur in many ways. So, players and clubs can rise above the sport.

Honestly, it's a shit show and this whole Payne Saga only highlights the problems and also how big a role the media plays in it.
Think current contacts are a real problem for all parties involved. We seem to keep coming back to needing a trading window or such at the end of the season.
I know there are problems with that but proving to be problems without as well. Perhaps the for case is starting to outweigh the against.

If it was in place we wouldn’t be having this debate.

Everyone see the haas interview (AGAIN) article?

Sad about his brother but honestly he needs to shut up. That's his 4th interview this bloody week it seems like and it's all SO OBVIOUS. He says nothing right as well, he needs to bloody apologise and say he's either sacked his managers or advised them not to discuss any contract for anything other then 2025 onwards with the Broncos bcos he is still under bloody contract.

Also, "I'm not money hungry" yet you've done an article about a SOLID GOLD coffin in an "Egyptian style mausoleum" on the families Gold coast 7 acres of property hahaha. Can this bloke get any dumber..

You're getting your panties in a twist over that?

Players talk to the media. That's part of being a sports star.

Haas has done more media in the last week then he has in his entire career. His brother also passed away a long time ago. I actually think it's really poor form to come out with this now. It's an obvious ploy to get sympathy. If you want to fall for it that's upto you...

Yep, its PR damage control.
Nothing that happened with Haas or his management over the past fortnight looked good for them.

Its obvious what Haas and his management are doing.
In the space of a week, Haas went from one of the most revered Broncos to one of the most hated.
His management looked like amateurs and made his client look like a selfish, money hungry brat.
They have tried multiple ways to spin this into Haas being the victim (which we all saw coming via his friendship with SBW and Mundine), from Haas just wanting to win a premiership (while he is currently in a top 4 side) to looking after his daughter (already as the top paid player at the club) to having a difficult time due to the passing of his brother (this happens to people every day of the week who are not in 800k a year jobs).

The NRL would also be telling them to reign it in, as Haas is very marketable for the game when he is not being a massive fuckwit off the field.

I have no time for him and look forward to him being out of the side for someone who both respects the club/his teammates and actually wants to be here.

If Haas is smart he'll because in each interview there is a different spin on it by whoever is writing the article to get clicks. The truth is getting lost in it all, he is getting poor advice from a fair few corners unfortunately. He is young and being influenced that much is obvious.

Andrew Webster’s article was fairly balanced, all things considered

You might need to tone it down a tad on the 'hate' we all supposedly feel! Many might dislike Haas now but trust me when I say 'most' have a very short memory. This will pass quickly enough.

Players do media all the time, but you are right, he is doing a lot more currently i think.

For some it will, for some it wont. I'll personally never back him again after this. He's playing every card in the book to get some sympathy because hes an idiot and totally misjudged what the reaction will be. Whenever anything goes wrong in my life or i stuff up, i dont try to blame it on my brother dying. I find it actually embarrassing and disrespectful people use that as an excuse.

Mate he's 100% gone in the off-season.

You can't put the genie back in the bottle.

Might want to tell the 30'000 fans who boo'd him that.
The hate is warranted. The off field shit, the contract upgrades without extensions, followed by a release request for more money is plenty of reason for the hate.
If you dont mind him bending you over, thats fine, but the hate he has copped is 100% warranted as far as im concerned.

My biggest gripe with Haas is his timing.
If he wants to leave for more money, that's fine.
But to do it mid-season and potentially derail the best run we have had in 3 years is not fine.

I am just happy DD and Ikin are playing hardball and not bowing to his demands, and if anything, i would have been happier if they had let him go to send a message the club wont be held at ransom.

To be honest I don't hate him. I just don't love him anymore. It is like an ex girlfriend or something, he is dead to me. I can't ever respect him the way I did Webcke, Petro, Carrol, Gee, Parker, Thorn or any off our great forwards.

He has proven himself a mercenary in his thought process. He has no love for the club or it's history. So i can't respect him as a person. Yeah I can admire things he does on the field but that will be it. His brand is most definitely tarnished. Until he goes to the club that loves it's mercenaries and buying premiership. The roorters. I will hate him with every inch of my being once he plays for them.
