OFFICIAL Payne Haas to depart Broncos at the end of 2026

It’s certainly a coup for Wayne if they are paying the same money, still not getting it from the Haas perspective, not buying this ‘ I
just need a change malarkey.’

The biggest thing that pisses me off is the timing. If he always wanted to go then what an absolute wanker, a couple months ago there were heaps more middle options on the market. We dont need to replace him, we just need 2 solid middles with experience and then id spend that money elsewhere for sure.
I read the Courier Mail and it said they only started the big talks when Koloamatangi was announced he was leaving Rabbitohs last month. Which makes a lot of sense. It sucks for us because that meant we lost at a chance of getting a replacement. It’s just really unlucky.

The article did it also state that there is no animosity within the club as it was he purely wanted a fresh start and a change. (But I’m sure the extra $$$ and clauses helped 😉😉) I really just think it was an offer and terms that the broncos could not match.

Roller coasters are fun and thrilling, we enjoyed the amazing ride, up and downs and everything in between but eventually have to get off that rollercoaster and realise there is much more to the club than one person.

We'll be fine without him.

The good thing is the rest of the comp doesn't have once-in-a-generation forwards in their pack so all we need are competent forwards that can match it with the opposition, make metres and lay a platform and we will have that.

The timing of the announcement is what pisses me off. The day before our season launch which was also going to be about celebrating our first premiership in nearly 20 years and 2 days before we head to the WCC which every player seems to be taking very seriously. It's ****ed, I think it's a really classless move from a player that the club has given so much. Yes Payne has given the club plenty too but why did he have to do it now. I have heard reports that Wayne leaked it but shouldn't there have been communications in the contract negotiations not to be a ****? I think he is weak as piss for this. Amazing player and pretty incredible to get to where he is considering where he comes from, but fails the decent bloke test and not for the firs time.

Listening to beaks pod from this arvo, Souths apparently only have 4 players signed for 2028, so there is lotttts of cap space available in a couple years.

Very much doubt he went for the same money to a state where his money will get him less, but Im sure we'll keep hearing it was the same though for sure as that hits the Broncos in crisis sweetspot.

They also said on the same pod that Haas nearly joined Souths before us, and was quoted as saying he was a huge Sam Burgess fan and his dad was a huge Souths fan. Sam apparently brushed a game of Paynes he said he would watch which pissed Payne off, and he was set to join the Storm til Wayne rang and he came to Brissy.

Long of it all is there seems to be a bit more at play than he him just leaving for the same money to go elsewhere. Whether any of it comes out is another story.

He met with Maguire and Burgess and Burgess promised to come to his Keebra game, and he will sign with Souths. Sam never showed.

Then he was off to Melbourne and Bennett called.

The timing was very poor. I wish it wasn’t announced in this way right before the season launch. I’ve heard the same that it was leaked on purpose especially considering that there is still the 10 day cooling period. But to be honest, when is the right time? It would be worse if he announces it just before the match next week, or before round 1. At this point the timing was always going to be bad

Someone pointed out something to me today....

Replace haas with 2 origin standard props (same cost)...

Still win the 2025 premiership? Yes, all walsh

Still make the 2023 gf? Highly likely...

Have we won a spoon with him having a good year? Yes, player of the year 2020 i believe.

2 gfs, 2 underwhelming games... jfh + leota got him scared in the gf too...

I actually think he's leaving becuase walsh got all the credit (rightfully) for the premiership lol. I remember an interview post gf he did where I thought it was very obvious. Interviewer mentioned walsh and haas started downplaying his performance lol

On that, **** id love jfh or leota. Would save about 600,000. Here's to hoping warriors or panthers have salary cap issues this year....

Has that mongrel in him that Payne didn't have, took on Whyte and Spencer

Shaping up for fisticuffs doesn`t mean you can play football.
What did he do after the melee ? SFA .
Jurbo is an absolute shell of his former self and he was 30 last year.

Patty doesn`t have a history of concussions though .
Big difference there .
Jake is still physically fit . It`s the concussions that will push him out .

He’s not a spine player and the contracts and management were a constant distraction. Remember when his management announced he was leaving a few years ago? Smooth operators they are not. The truth will come out in full sooner or later, has to be the $$ I predict.

Yeah, this. I'll miss him on the field but I won't miss the circus nearly every year when it comes to him and money.

It is indeed a shame it came out one week after Tino activated his clause, I reckon we would have been very attractive for him but oh well.

We never have a shortage of quality middles coming through and thankfully, we have Willison already. Te Kura taking a leap does become pretty important now though.

That said, no one thought JFH would have been at the Warriors until he suddenly was out of the blue, so if we want a gun middle, one will pop up from nowhere, we just need to be patient...it might even be Haas when he realises what a mistake he has made going to play with two lazy players in Mitchell and Fifita.

I like Tino a lot, but I still don't think he is at Payne's level, and would probably need near Payne money to come. Without looking, he's probably on similar or more to stay at the Tits.

Unless you convinced him to take unders what he is on, when his management would know we had a Payne size $$ hole in our cap, I don't know if I'd want to swap Payne for Tino in a like for like $ wise. Sure, he was rumoured to go to Storm for less, but his management would know we just lost a 1.2m FRF.

If you can somehow nab 2 rep players or fringe reps for that same money, I think its a better play. As has already been said in here, I think Payne is the outlier for that sort of money for props, I just don't think any other prop is worth close to what you pay Payne.

Payne has never been rock solid in his football commitment to anyone- he was at the Titans and Warriors, played Meninga on the Gold Coast, signed with the Broncos, nearly signed with the Storm. His six-year Broncos deal in 18 is a marvel and I remember Bennett saying it will stop this coming up every 12 months.

WOW. Interesting Orr was his manager in 2018, and he signed a six-year deal, he never did that again.

Signed a two-year extension in 24 and then left in 26.

Lots of rumours doing the rounds on Reddit - so take this sparingly - that Payne and his management wanted a clause that would allow him to renegotiate the deal every 12 months. Broncos said no and souths said yes.

If there is any truth to the above then I'm glad that the Broncos didn't agree to the terms. I love Payno and appreciate everything that he's done for the club but renegotiating every twelve months would be an absolute cluster f**K to the Broncos salary cap.

It doesn't allow for future planning as the club is constantly in limbo waiting to see what Payne wants to do (or how much more money he wants). It also means that Payne and his management would forever be in the driver's seat regarding contract negotiations.

I wouldn't be surprised if his deal with Souths has several release clauses. Apparently he spent a lot of time in the Samoan camp talking about R360 - if that ever legitimately gets off the ground , then he is guaranteed gone.

Well said. We still have a spine that’s going to be envy of the comp for 10 years. I’m sure that most clubs would move heaven and earth for Walsh if he was available and they’d do a lot for Mam and Pezet. Who do souths have, Grey and Humphries?
