Playing Numbers

Something I would like however is players playing with there surnames above their positional number.
Would be too much hassle to do though especially with a coach like Henjack who changes positions of players more times than he shaves his head.

Pretty easy to tell people who's playing in what position:

Person standing at the back is fullback
Peeps standing next to the sidelines are the wingers
Peeps standing next to the wingers are the centres

Person picking the ball up each play the ball is the hooker.
Ball players are the halves, traditionally the player tighter is the halfback
The players taking hitups tighter in the ruck are the front rowers, whereas players on the fringes are locks/2nd row

That's not that hard. But I don't mind either way, just said it doesn't bother me...

I don't really have a problem with the idea but why bother?? I am more worried that this type of issue comes up when CEO's meet when we have massive salary cap dramas.

But these days a lot of the time players don't play in the position indicated by their number anyway - which can be very confusing for newcomers to the game. If I say to someone "Oh yeah #3, that's centre. But he's now moved to the wing and later in the game he may even move to the backrow"

Exactly. What position is #18? I've seen him run out on the field before but I don't know where he's playing.
I do enjoy the current structured numbering system, but there is really no reason against players wearing personalised numbers.

Easy solved. Don the NFL system where certain positions wear certain numbers.

Outside backs 1-10
Centres 11-20
Halves 21-30

etc.

No it's a stupid idea, would confuse a lot of fans.

Can't you count past 17? It doesn't confuse soccer fans or NFL fans or AFL fans so I don't see the issue.

I don't care either way, probably think it would be a cool idea.

Having names and numbers on jerseys would be a good marketing move IMO. Plenty of people will want to buy a jersey with the name and number of their favourite player on the back.

He can wear our jersey if he really wants, be abit weird thou.

I love the idea. It works in the AFL so whos to say it can't work in the NRL?

And it becomes a massive merchandise tool for the new club when people go out to buy the new players jersey.

Well with personalised numbers that wouldn't be a problem.
It also opens up a share of the merchandising profits to popular players.

Plenty of people already buy the supporter jerseys (which come with no numbers) and pay extra to get their fave player's # and name on the back anyway.

The difference here is that jerseys could be sold pre-numbered and named and some of the profits could go to the player himself.

I don't like it. I didn't like it in our Super League and I don't like it in the ESL.

The current 1-17 system is fine. Most players will wear the same number everytime anyway.

What if a player wants a number that is currently taken so they have another but the other player leaves or retires freeing up the number.

It's fine in certain sports but I don't think it will look right with numbers all over the place

1. Hoffman
22. Kemp
23. hodges (you know he would want this number)
12. T'eo
5. Yow Yeh

etc etc souks look stupid.

Oh boohoo, new fans might not know where someone is playing? Most new fans don't know the difference between a prop and a second rower anyway. Some fans still think 2 is left winger...sometimes yes. Sometimes no.

Confusion etc, minor issue. Tradition...more of an argument, though we flipped the forward numbers around about 25 years ago...8 used to be lock.

Marketing wise, it's huge. Could even let players pick their origin and test number once they get there, provided it's available. I see more pros than cons.
