POST GAME POST GAME [Round 8, 2023] Broncos vs Eels

Just heard Girdler talking about the Hopgood tackle. He defended it saying it was a one on one tackle defending his line . Did the stupid **** even watch the game.
Started as a 3 on on 1 then finished 2 on 1.
What chance has the game got with fucktards like him in the media and there are plenty of them.

did he then go on to defend Haas for making a 1 on 1 tackle defending his line.

because if you use that excuse to defend Hopgood, it equally applies to Haas

Yeah he did defend Haas.

No one understands this rule, least of all the poor referees who are tasked to enforce it:

Everything about this play was wrong and should never have been play on.

Either it was a hip drop (does de Belin's use his body weight on the foot of Smith, or does he make contact with the ground first before taking him down) or an incomplete play the ball since Smith failed to maintain his balance.

Isn't that like...their job to understand the rule?
The refs are rugby league nerds. They live and breathe the minutiae of the rules. Individually, they probably all do believe they understand what constitutes a "hip drop," or at least have their own impression of what the administration is trying to achieve with the crackdown.

But, going by the discussion at all levels of the game during the course of this round, it appears the comprehension disconnect goes higher than the on-field referees.

I think we can all see how the NRL is trying to protect players from this kind of tackle, but they haven't been able to instruct players on how to avoid it short of shirking their defensive duties.

We're not privy to the referees pushing back against rules they're being asked to enforce, but I bet they've been jumping up and down over this one. It's a mess.

I actually agree. Refs get a bad wrap and rightly so most of the time but in this instance of hip drops, they are being let down by their higher ups. No one knows what it supposedly is or isn’t and then the NRL release a video explanation that seems to contradict itself yet again. It is clear the NRL also doesn’t know and this is now a blight on the game. The refs are trying to manage something that isn’t defined or remotely clear here, that’s hard, especially when you aren’t good at your job in the first place.

Get out of my head, mate.

I can't go along with the refs not being good at their jobs. They're the best at what they do, they've risen up through the ranks of their profession, what they do is tough as **** and they have to do it under the microscopic scrutiny of drunken angry mobs of armchair critics. Unless you can think of someone better.

The canary is not only dead in this coal mine, the miners are as well. When we have Pat Carrigan, one of the smartest in the game, who's previously dissected this rule infinitum with his lawyers, and subsequently benched for it, not being able to define it, shit is seriously clogging the bowl. Was Pat's tackle that much worse than Ezra's who only got a week? Fucked if I know. I can't even tell what bad is. And as for Payne, he's as clean and professional as they come. He doesn't do careless.

I feel dirty agreeing with @McHunt but he's right on here, if we are talking about on field refs. Yes from time to time they make a nuclear stuff up, but by and large they are rare. And I have lost count of the number of times they get something really tricky spot on at full speed and when the call is made I'll be thinking 'no way' and then 5 slo mo replays later I see they got it right. I think the on field refs, for the most part, do a fantastic job.
It's the bunker that I have no tolerance for. When you have the benefit of multiple angles and slo mo replays and you still get it wrong, that is called incompetence, and there's plenty of that in the bunker.

Of the "Hip drops"that happened in that game.

None were actually picked up by the ref at the time and were all Bunker and for Haas the MRC.

Glad it's not just me, but I am disappointed it cost me the opportunity for a timely joke at Andrew Johns's expense.

Might just come back and re-read this thread this week
