So did Suaalii's yet he was able to stay on the field and received a lighter sentence.

By the time Hastings released the ball, there wasn't much Felise could have done to avoid contact. He was travelling at such a pace that he was committed to the tackle. It's worth noting that Hastings only came off for an HIA and wasn't diagnosed with a concussion.
i guess we will see tonight lol the next time it happens players will be able to go back and say 'well felise and suaalii got off so should i' if he is successful.

Here's an example of a very late tackle that wasn't even pinged. And no one complained.

I don't think anyone has ever called Billy a "grub." Sometimes shit just happens when you've already committed.

You might argue in this case Billy wasn't leading with his shoulder, so it's not so brutal. But, on the other hand, in this position he can see where he's going. He completed this tackle.

All I'm saying is these cases can be highly individual and subjective. Sometimes you think the player doing it is a grub and he doesn't care that it's late. But if you run with that logic in a tribunal you have your finger on the scales and someone is going to call it biased.

That's why I think we just accept whatever penalty he gets and understand why it's not easy to look consistent on these borderline infringements. The harder pill to swallow for the player charged is when it's like Carrigan's hip drop which was either 5 weeks or nothing.

I believe the specific citing for Kaufusi, Suaalii, etc. was the whiplash effect on the neck... Billy didnt whiplash therefore not considered dangerous.

That and it's a deceptive freeze frame.

Edwards falls to the ground as soon as he passes the ball.

Yep MRC have completely shit the bed on that specific grading.

Suaalii should've got the same grading as Kaufusi, because his was actually worse and has now seen CNK miss a game through concussion... but that is now the precedent.

Actually what are the rules on precedent again.... I thought there was something that early pleas couldn't be considered as precedent and it was more like those that fought it and lost were the ones that set precedent 🤔🤔🤔

@Big Pete does that ring a bell at all??

Geez there's some questionable thoughts on that Dolphins forum...

Their "big centres"? Aitken and Brenko?? Tiring out Herbie and Kotoni?!? Um...

Aitken:
1679377947328

Brenko:
1679377967681

VERSUS

Herbie:
1679377997344

Kotoni:
1679378014160

So by my calculations that makes our smaller winger (Kotoni) 3cm taller and 1kg lighter than their smaller winger (Aitken), and Herbie the same height and 2kg heavier than Brenko. So in total our wingers are 3cm taller and 1kg heavier than the Phins' "big centres"... Ours are also 23 and 24 vs 27 for Aitken/Brenko so we have age on our side as well...how on earth does old mate come to the conclusion their centres have the advantage??

He's right though that Wayne's game plan will be simple - it always is in the big games. Good old Bennettball. Completions top priority. Grind away. Which is all well and good, but we - finally - have x-factors which the Phins are almost completely ill-equipped to counter.

I believe they changed this a few years ago, so now the judiciary considers MRC gradings as precedents.

I never realised Brenko was that tall, he looks shorter then Herbie.

Brenko is a plodder, his best ability is shuffling the ball because he is slow and will not make a break on his own.

Aitken used to be like Staggs in his early years at St George where he would get through teams with brute strength but I haven't seen that from him for years now.

Well, Wayne did get the worst Queensland side in history up against a dynasty making NSW side. Anything is possible with old Clint.

If we play direct and fast like we did against the Dragons in the second half, it's going to be our game to lose.

The problem is, each game we've started poorly and each game that start has been getting worse.

Is the reason you showed this freeze frame rather than the actual tackle because it didn’t suit your argument?

Live updates

6:32pm - Ghabar, representing Kaufusi, argues the tackle was "only marginally late and deserves no more than a base charge", saying "player Kaufusi was slightly to the right and ahead of him so player Hastings knows he is coming towards him.

"The ball is leaving Hastings' hands but you can see that Kaufusi is already committed to make a tackle. First contact is Kaufusi’s left arm on the No.7

"In the Suaalii tackle, there is no commitment to make the tackle until after Nicoll-Klokstad has released the ball. His contact is not only careless, it is grossly careless.

Ghabar adds Nicoll-Klokstad was in a more vulnerable position than Hastings when Suaalii plants his left foot and drives his right shoulder into the back of the Warriors fullback, causing whiplash. It is quite severe to his head and neck."

6:23pm - Knowles begins his submission: "Player Hastings is looking, as ball players often do, for an offload to a player on outside. Kaufusi is about one metre away and Hastings has turned his body so that his side is vulnerable should contact occur. Player Kaufusi does not make any attempt to slow down or avoid contact. He goes through with the tackle with full momentum at a time when Hastings is particularly vulnerable."

Speaking on the Suaalii tackle in comparison, Knowles adds: "I just ask you to recognise two hits which are different - the tackler Suaalii is not rushing up at speed. If you do that you must show a duty of care. Player Hastings had no ability to protect himself. He had already passed the ball and was not involved in the play. There were no mitigating circumstances or anything that could explain how this tackle could be on the lower level of seriousness."

6:10pm - The hearing has begun with NRL legal counsel Patrick Knowles showing footage from seven different camera angles of Kaufusi’s hit on Hastings after he passed the ball to Bradman Best.

The panel was then shown footage by Ghabar of a tackle by Sydney Roosters star Joseph Suaalii on Warriors fullback Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad in Round 2 that was not cited by the Match Review Committee.

6:00pm - Felise Kaufusi has arrived at Rugby League Central alongside Dolphins assistant coach Kristian Woolf. He is represented by lawyer Nick Ghabar.

Paul Simpkins and Bob Lindner are the panel members alongside judiciary chairman Justice Geoff Bellew.

Kaufusi has pleaded guilty to Dangerous Contact on Newcastle’s Jackson Hastings but is seeking a downgrade from Grade 2 to 1 in a bid to be part of the club's historic clash against the Broncos on Friday night.

A downgrade would leave Kaufusi with a fine, while if the challenge is unsuccessful, his suspension will rise from three to four weeks as it is his third offence.

6:50pm - Knowles responds to Ghabar's argument that Hastings wasn't injured in the incident.

"The fact that player Hastings wasn’t injured had more to do with good luck than player Kaufusi exercising care," Knowles said.

"There was no step taken before right shoulder made contact with back of Hastings to reduce the force of contact. Anything done after that was really too late."

6:47pm - Ghabar continues with his final submission, indicating Hastings did not receive any medical attention following the incident.

"If player Hastings had held the ball what would have been wrong with the tackle?," he argues. "The risk of injury was higher in Suaalii tackle, in my submission.

"It is fair to say player Hastings would have been expecting some form of contact having seen player Kaufusi coming at him. We say both tackles are grade one for seriousness but if anything the Suaalii tackle is worse."

Wayne’s buddy Crawley was arguing on nrl 360 that even if kaufusi is found guilty it should be suspended until after the game against the broncos because of Taylan May precedence. 😂
Crawley is so pathetic. He is meant to be a professional reporter yet he acts more like a school girl trying to get the attention of the basketball captain who will **** her but won’t acknowledge around the campus.

I want to know if they will address the Suaalii tackle because the fact he got nothing for exactly the same thing, perhaps worse is pathetic.
