Pre-season

Where did Keenan say it?

Again I only saw Darius say it once and it was in reference to negative comments and how players need to find balance. Football can't be everything and it's a point a lot of senior players make. The reason why it gained any traction is because of how Fox framed it and because it's Darius.

I thought we already went through this with Boyd? He didn't casually say it, it was in response to player welfare and mental health.

I haven't heard Keenan Palasia's comments so I have no idea what the context is.
Not going to get through to them, mate. They simply don’t want to comprehend what Boyd said because he needs to be the bad guy no matter what. It’s ridiculous how wrong they are and how they continue to act like they’re right, embarrassing really. The context has been explained enough times for them to understand so at this point it’s basically a blatant lie to imply Boyd didn’t take the game seriously.

It probably didn't help Darius' case that his actions on the field over his final couple of seasons really seemed to mimic the whole 'it's only a game' mentality, even if those comments were taken out of context.

I think he’s referring to this:

His style of play never changed. He was never a Mick Hancock type who fought for every inch, Darius was craftier and it would polarise fans who wanted to see their backs come up with hard runs. He was past his peak but it wasn't through a lack of effort.

Ta @theshed so this time the context was about a player dealing with serious injuries and having a support group around him outside of football. Actually that maybe relevant to 2020 since the team couldn't escape the bubble. One of many factors that made 2020 such an anomaly.

Yeah Keenans comment seems pretty innocuous. I’ll give Darb’s the benefit of the doubt to.

I won’t hear any of your comments defending his playing though. Terrible last few seasons.

Strong disagree re: effort there Pete. He was trying to do as little as possible at times. I suppose that can require effort to not do anything

i don't really see it as defending Boyd's playing, as he only said his "style" never changed ... he never said he played good (or even average) footy.

I agree, his style was the same as always ... he just lost the skills to back it up (especially the decision making when defending 1-on-1)

Sorry, mate. It was just tongue in cheek. I actually think this particular topic should be banned for 5 years.

I said as much.

There were times he struggled to get in the game because he specialised in set pieces, but the 'efforts' that are held against him were common complaints through out his career. Those complaints aren't invalid, but it wasn't like he threw in the towel either. It's just that they became more obvious in a struggling team and as his body started to degrade.

Every time I re-visit our 2020 season, every match, I comfort and console myself by saying ... it's only a game.

I wonder if this matra is what Kevvie will print out and stick on the dressing shed walls.

Heard keenan paldbfjdn say it in an interview too. **** this "it's just a game" quote and thinking.

If "it's just a game", maybe Walter's should start docking their pay every time they don't perform and say "it's just a few thousand $"... rosters, really pisses me off when they say that. How many bosses would tolerate their employee sucking at their job if they got paid $100,000's and when they got called up to explain they said "it's just work/a game"?! Go play park footy then ya unappreciative tossers...

Rant over...
Fair dinkum. That's a terrible, terrible misreading of what he said in the interview. Did you actually watch the whole thing or just the two seconds where he said "footy's not everything" with no other contexf?

I watched the whole interview.
He didn't say footys not everything? I don't care about the rest of the interview, he said those words did he not? Are you telepathic or an expert on body language? These players saying it shows their mentality, yes he was injured but he should be saying how he hated seeing the boys lose and that he was chomping at the bit to get back out there to help the boys win and he missed footy so much.
I don't think Keenan is as bad as some others judging by that interview, but the fact a player who debuted LAST YEAR has already got the mindset that there's more to life then fppty shows the mentality of the squad. If I was a few games into my NRL career my life would be footy! The good players and squads have intent and drive to win no matter what and don't de-priorise footy when it's getting too hard ffs.

People kill themselves or try to or consider it with attitudes opposite to that as well.
People kill themselves for many reasons but when they think footy is life and you have no footy then they think they have no life. It’s a ridiculous thought, especially from a bunch of blokes who don’t play footy at a high level at all. Priority should be their family and their own head space. Which is exactly what both of these comments are referencing. It’s a fucking dumb conversation and if any coach is pushing that footy is life they are a shit coach.

That is honestly a shit comment to make mate. People commit suicide for 100's of different reasons. Best you leave that one there....
