Pre-Season

Tyson Smoothy just officially exist at the Broncos.

Great to hear Cory backing himself!
One thing I really don’t want to see happen again is Kev’s pre-season competition for a major spine position. Just tell them now, whoever it is, that they will be the 9 or 14 round 1 and to prepare for it.

9. Billy off: 25 min / on: 60 min
14. Paix on: 25 min / off 60 min

Depth:
Smoothy to start season
Mozer after min 15 games of cup

Give the system 5 games to work and only make changes if it’s a total failure or the depth is making it impossible to not select them.

I like it. I really hope Paix comes back to pre-injury form, he was looking great and if he does that and continues to improve, he is a shot at making it difficult to put Billy ahead of him but he has to hit the ground running.

yeah why would you want your players earning their spots , and have others kicking stones because they didn't get it . makes complete sense

Pa-y-y-y-xy is sounding not only confident in himself he also sounds much more comfortable with how the squad is going.

The cocksure lip on Walshy is certainly rubbing off on the rest of them. It should work wonders for our defence having a mega-mouth at the back constantly in the teams ear keeping them honest.

Another season or two and this team will be a real contender as 3/4 of our spine is still learning from Reyno. Unfortunately, Reyno will be gone by the time we reach a GF but I have no issues with him claiming the legacy he left the Broncos was a spine capable of winning a comp.

Exciting times ahead with the team we're building.

Not sure if you’re being sarcastic or not but if Walters and Paix haven’t earned their spots after a full season than we have bigger issues than I realised. Obviously if a player is told he gets the spot round 1 than stops showing up at training you drop them but if you’ve been a coach for 2 seasons at a club and can’t tell who is your round 1 pick for major decisions without needing a full preseason and trials than you might as well pack it in.

If a player kick stones because you are honest and upfront and tell them from the beginning you’ll have to force my hand to get a start than you made the right choice not giving them first shot.

Reynolds out for indefinite period.

Of course

Kevvie says:

“He’s (Reynolds) in the swing of it up until yesterday, he’s copped a knock on his ankle so he might be out for an indefinite (period of time) … Not a long period but he’s a little bit lame at the moment,” Walters told SENQ on Friday morning.

“Last year we didn’t get him back until basically the New Year so he’s been in the trenches with the boys and doing all the hard work which he loves,” Walters said.

“He enjoys that part of it as well and he’s been great for us, as Kurt Capewell, the other elder member of our squad, they’ve both been really good.

“They’ve both (had) a full pre-season with us now into Christmas and they’ll join us after Christmas, so we didn’t have that luxury last year.”

It's never ideal to lose a player of Reynolds calibre, even during the pre-season when there are no competition points up for grabs.

but the silver lining is that it will give Madden an extended period of time, dirrecting the team, in case we need him during the season proper.

and i'm sure Reynolds will still be around to give his input

Agreed, but I desperately want to know how serious the injury is.

At some point we might need to have a look at our training approach. The amount of joint injuries at his club.

Probably no better time to get injured though I guess

we do have big issues in the 9 position ,that's why I think it would be a bad idea to gift either billy or paix with the job before the start of the season .
either way Kevvie go's for bench or starter they should train and play the same. Who's to say smoothy doesn't get a crack either.
pretty sure Kevvie knows what his team will look like, but sometimes you have that guy who kills it in the preseason and pushes for a spot .

The best coaches clearly define roles and give players direction. It doesn’t mean you can’t consider other options if someone clearly out performs the other. I also don’t care who the 2 hookers are that Kev chooses - they’re all sub-optimal, it was just an example.

But a good coach would tell his spine players early that they have the role and get everyone used to playing with each other. The second guessing and constant chopping and changing is horrible coaching.

The rugby league adage that gets repeated by successful coaches since the dawn of time is “pick your halves early and commit to them” and I think hooker these days deserves the same philosophy

the good coaches/ teams have good players to execute these rolls , some coaches have to tinker with the player or roll to work with what they got.
you don't need to tell them early, you just need to pick your best option and have depth in that same roll.
being a good coach isn't about picking early it's about having a game plan getting all players to execute that plan. yes you should have your spine set but that isn't always reality because of injuries and salary cap, much easier when you have a club and system that has stability and class players.
we've struggled because we haven't have stability across the board, not just in the spine but as a club.

We’re talking about what good coaches would drill into the spine early on so that the spine would in turn make the team a lot better. But, what does our coach do?
Would he keep beating the bush until end of trails & then decide on the spine?
Come on, Kev!!! You MUST be a lot better than this.

In hindsight, we’ll knew that Billy would be 9 & Paix would be 14 😡 until mid season. When Smoothy & Mozer is eligible to play, things would be interesting.

I just disagree with you. The reason every player loves Wayne and play so well under him (and same for Belly) is that he instills them with belief by letting them know exactly where they stand and what’s expected. Wayne isn’t at the Dolphins right now saying “fight it out for spots boys and I’ll let you know who won after the trials”. He hired all of them to do a specific job and that’s what they’d have all been sat down and told by now.

Meanwhile, gamble has moved to Newcastle for a "better opportunity" a regular first grade, but continues to descend down the halves pecking order.

Poor tyson got some bad advice there.

I wouldn't be surprised if he was pushed after attacking the coach. Certainly have no inside info there, just my own thoughts.
