NEWS Reece Walsh sells his soul to Warriors. No big deal.

im happy with the way the cub handled this....you have to draw a line in the sand somewhere.....

plus I think the club are trying hard not to burn bridges between the player and the cub, very smart.

He isnt lost to us forever either. in a few years time, if he does reach his potential there's nothing stopping us from making a play. We take our $400K offer now and maybe its doubled but the fact is, you are taking no risks with that money if he is in fact the real deal.

Today though, trust me that money is better spent on bringing in NRL standard professionals which the roster is crying out for.

I think a lot of posters on here are aware of this; the punt on "potential" has to change. Overpaying to keep heavily targeted young players notwithstanding...

The simple fact is the NRL needs to protect clubs paying to develop talent.

There should be fixed maximum wages for any player under the age of 21.

Clubs that develop the talent should always have first pick. It's good for the grass roots of the game to keep the richer clubs spending cash at that level of the game. If the raiding continues, clubs will cut funding to this when times are tough... like right now during the worst broncos run ever and a global crisis.

But the idiot in charge can't see the new rules are terrible and is doubling down....so bugger all chance this gets fixed.

I'd agree with this but add the caveat of this rule only applies to any player that hasn't played NRL yet

we probs need a draft system given the inequality of the league
Not saying you’re wrong but how would a draft work? Surely clubs would be less inclined to spend big on development when they know that they probably won’t see the results of their expenditure.

The AFL use a convoluted points system that allows the developing team to jump up the draft ladder to pick their juniors.

This is changing this year to an extent though. If the player is in the first 20, they can no longer be matched I believe.

Oh wow, that won't be popular.

It is really good. This is NGA thing for Victorian clubs is ridiculous. Michael Johnson's kid (Lions legend) was an NGA kid for Essendon simply because he was aboriginal. These clubs are getting free access to these gun kids for the most ridiculous reasons.

To be honest, I had lost track of how the academies operated these days.

I think the general idea could be applied to the NRL though. If you develop a kid (obviously criteria would apply to what "develop" means) then you would get priority access to them at the draft.

It's easy, draft and cap relief for juniors who stay with their club. If you move from us to Melbourne then Melbourne pay full freight, but if you stay with us we get a 30-40% relief levy applied to your wage. The NAB seems to do it right with their free, restricted free, and franchisee players.
