NEWS Reece Walsh to save QLD

If only Isaako was a Queenslander…

He's an excellent support player, with Papa back and Welch hopefully staying on the field he could benefit from improved go forward. I'm excited to see what he will do.

On a different note, imagine if he kills it.

The press will be able to dine out on us releasing him for another 5 years then.

It will be nauseating (more than normal).
Good, we deserve it. If Walters was heavily involved in this decision he needs sacking for this alone.

What a stupid comment! How is it on Kevvie when the kid got a big $$$ offer that we couldn't and shouldn't compete with, especially the state the place is in .

He may well, but game 3 and beyond may be where he is found wanting tbh. Plenty of debutants have been ordinary in their second game. This will be the issue with an 18 yr old.

I'm glad Coates was dropped. He's been ordinary all season, one cover tackle doesn't change it.
Actually I was hoping he would get picked, then Brisbane can share the burden elsewhere

As for Walsh good luck to the lad, but It reeks of desperation on Green’s part and I hope for Walsh’s sake he comes out of it for the better.

What a stupid reply, you let a possibly generational spine player walk out the door over $200K when we have the weakest spine in the competition and then you go on to pay second rowers with the same amount of experience (that is nil) what you could have paid to keep a fullback/5/8th (the position we really need to fill).

If he is such a shit judge of talent don't you think that counts against his bona fides as a first grade coach.

No , it was the situation he was in .
He needed to stand his ground, Walsh would have had a similar deal as piakura where it go's up over the years. You do know that piakura only gets the estimated $400k in his 3rd year ?
We need a quality experienced spine, not throwing cash at players that could be quality. Who's to say that Walsh doesn't drp his bundle in his second year, like so many do.

If Walsh was playing first grade for the broncos he wouldn’t be making his origin debut on Sunday

At least he will probably cost the warriors even more now after his debut triggers a rep bonus or upgrade.

That's for sure, can't bear to think about it. Equally if he gets smashed (which I hope he doesn't) those same media hacks will be all over the selectors for putting the kid into the Origin cauldron in the first place.

Turns out the the Warriors increased his salary from a $60,000 development contract to $100,000 this year, with an increase each year to around $400,000. Cheap for an Origin fullback, who can kick goals and fill in at 6.

Walters:

“We didn’t want him to go. But he was strong on going. We knew he was talented but I wanted him to play a few more games in Intrust Cup.”

“I was keeping the money for Cameron Smith. (sarcasm) Please, give me a break. How would I stand in the way of any kid for my own son? Please. Every little mistake that’s made I get blamed for. I’m not the greatest coach in the NRL, but I’m not the worst. I knew how tough this job was going to be."

“At the end of the day the Warriors offered to throw him straight in and paid him more money. That’s what happened.”

“I’d seen at the Broncos previously that talented youngsters had been given an NRL jersey way too early and before they were ready. It didn’t help their development. Sometimes an 18-year-old can train really well but then struggle in games, so I had a conversation with him about his pathway through."

“He was adamant he wanted to go. He saw the opportunity to play first grade straight away. He’s a good kid and we hope to get him back one day.”

Walsh:

“It was a dream of mine to play NRL for Brisbane. I remember when I was seven years old, I would run around with a Broncos jersey on wishing I could play for the Broncos. That’s something I always wanted to do, but then the Warriors came into the picture and they were very clear with the opportunity they could give me."

“I wanted to play first grade, but Kevvie didn’t think I was quite ready. He wanted to hold me back a little bit and they had Jamayne there.”
