Not taking anything away from the win at all but just to add a comment about South’s, boy did the look ordinary.

They have always struggled with making metres out of their own half because their backs are small, they are good finishers but can’t compete in the air. Their forward pack is a Wayne Bennett classic relying on heart and effort over ability, but he’s no longer at the club to motivate. They have an incredible eyes up footballer in Walker but have let their organiser walk in Reynolds. I feel for him, he is about to experience what Milford went through.

I think they are in real trouble this year unless Latrell goes on one of those unbelievable fullback god mode runs of form.

Like I said, not taking anything away from the win. Our defence was far far improved, especially on our try line. So many plays that would’ve sliced through last season that didn’t. We bombed/almost scored about 4 other tires so on a luckier night we could’ve won by something like 24-6, and to do it without Reynolds was an added achievement.

Very pleased with the performance but we still have room for improvement. If we can make them look that average the storm will blow them away next week.

Few thoughts:

- Souths looked ordinary and will miss the 8 this year for mine, but that shouldn’t take anything away from a huge Broncos performance with a lot of players out

- There was noticeably more effort by our guys to wrestle and turn players in the tackle, to set up blocking for our kickers and to chase the kick - was night and day to last year and it’s great to see us able to do these things like the elite teams

- The only 2 periods of concern were from after Rabbits scored to half time, when we were getting physically dominated and falling behind the pace with Haas and Carrigan off, and the last 5 minutes of the game where we seemed intent on playing frantic, frazzled, risky footy instead of winding down the clock. Luckily.. the return of Flegler / Hetherington and Reynolds should solve these problems respectively.

- I think Albert Kelly has proven he should ve the 6 alongside ARey - experienced, wily and able to play an instinctual game next to a controlling half, he benefits the team the most

- The more I see of Cobbo, the more I’m convinced he’s not ready for first grade… it’s not a talent issue, he’s just trying too hard to make something happen on every play and currently lacks the polish to convert half opportunities his talent creates. He’s not a first grade player yet and has a LONG way to go… BUT:

- Cobbo looks worse defensively because Staggs was SO poor. He really needs to work on his decision making - so many times he rushed up and exposed the entire flank. He’s meant to be a senior player now on big money and nobody is questioning his attacking ability, but he seriously needs to work on his defensive game, because right now he’s a liability.

Whilst he doesn’t bring the impact of Robati, I actually like James on the bench. Old head who doesn’t really let the team down.

that's the best thing we've got options, even some younger guys to get some game time in Piakura, Willison and Te Kura .

I didn't really notice Herbie much in attack, other than that crafty grubber/air swing. His defence was pretty good, I thought. Souths managed to keep both centres fairly quiet. If I had to pick a standout centre is was Capewell by a mile.

Everyone is talking about Selwyn today, no surprise. If Jamayne had made that many errors he'd already be on the bus to Redcliffe. Not that he was to blame for at least half of them. They'll need to work on their combinations out there.

I like him for now but once Flegler is back assuming we aren’t missing anyone you probably from that game and the pre-season go the bench as something like this:

16. Palasia (The way he played yesterday was outstanding and he proved it in the trials as well)
17. Robati (Young versatile and can create a bit of energy, feel like he doesn’t drop off that standard the other 3 set early)

I see that forward pack continuing it on from Haas, Carrigan and Hethos platform. Flegler was in such good form in the trials and it seems he has really turned a corner since origin which is great. For once we have a forward pack where whilst Foegler might be borderline overpaid we have a reliable and GOOD middles to dominate the middle third with a halfback to direct and clearly some outside backs who can be very dangerous just need to think with their heads not their egos. I will reiterate that shit doesn’t change over night a bit like the soccer saying “but can you do it on a cold rainy night in stoke”. If you can’t I don’t want to know about these one game wonders.

RK is great value for what he is being paid but to pretend he didn't put us under pressure, twice, when the game is in the balance is... well... something you'd do. Yeah we were pretty clunky out wide but dominated through the middle. Defiantly room for improvement but the fundamentals were better than they’ve been for a long time.

Agreed about Cobbo, he’s had a rough start to the year. Could probably use a bit more time in cup but I think he’ll come good if you back him. On Isaako, I think he had by far his best game in a long time - nothing flashy but did a lot of the dirty work he has been criticised for not doing.

A few things to like about last night, gutsy win without Reynolds and our normal points creator in Staggs had a quiet night. Haas back to his best straight away, few nice offloads with minimal risk.

Left edge defence was really good. Billy did a good job defensively combining with that side. Capewell obviously a huge boost.
Carrigan showing he is a prop, and a good one. He ran hard and made big inroads.
