POST GAME [Round 1, 2022] Broncos vs Rabbitohs

In fairness, Staggs had a bit of a shocker with the ball and in support play. Farnworth was practically non-existent in attack most of the game. All the excitement happened between Albert and Selwyn.
Staggs is feeeing his way back into the game.. Farnworth was outstanding in defense and starved of good ball in attack. Competed well brave effort recovering from covid. In Katoni and Herbie we have two of the most exciting young centres in the game. Both require early good ball.

I was wondering if herbie may have an niggling injury or be deconditioned. He did not play the trials, and usually he is up there with hit ups and metres but only took several runs.

As I recall he missed the last trial in Mackay with a very, very late positive test. So he's only been recovered from covid for a week or thereabouts. Still showed some wheels at times though.

I think the reason our backs didn’t get much is because the attack was pretty clunky. The balls from Turpin were almost never clean which then lead to the halves being half a step behind and making it hard to get good ball to the backs. I don’t mind the idea of Albert at 6 with Billy at 14, but I really think Paix deserves a spot. He was one of our best in the trials.

FTR,

we lost both the set restarts (6 - 1 in Souths Favour) and the penalty count (7 - 5 in Souths Favour) ...

yet we won the match.

last year, with stats like that we would have folded like a cheap suit
I knew we got caned in the 6 agains, but didn’t think it was that bad.

13 infringements to 6, or slightly more than double. SMH.

There was a set around the 25 minute mark, 3 6 agains IN A ROW and I could not tell you what any of them were for.
All of a sudden we were on the back foot until half time. It got blamed on haas and carrigan going off, but something like 15 tackles in a row will also bloody do it...

I feel that Palasia's efforts have been overshadowed somewhat by how good Haas and Carrigan were.

But he made 129m and 31 tackles himself.

I'm glad he turned down a bigger more secure offer from Manly to stay loyal ... it has been reported recently that he turned down a 4 year, 250k per season offer from Manly, Instead signing a 1 year 200k contract with us

Albert 2022 > Anthony 2019-2021

Isaako overestimated Roberts' arm. Next time a field goal is on Capewell should go to dummy half. He has the longest pass in the team.

How can he pass it to himself?

Needs work:
  • High kicks were terribly placed most of the time.

The kicking game was pretty shocking. Aside from that one deft grubber Billy put in that was unlucky not to snag the restart (I feel like Herbie has had a bit of history touching balls he was never a chance of grounding, needs to think about that), it was constantly Albert putting up tepid bombs. Would've like to see more variety in who was kicking and what they were putting in. Reynolds should fix a lot of that though.

Herbie saw barely any ball because Billy ran it almost everytime he touched it. He needs to find a better balance and work Capewell, Farnworth and Oates into it more. Hopefully it will be Kelly on that side next week anyway.

Yeah, that series was perplexing. The ref is miked up, they should have to call out the player and infringement each time, wouldn't be a huge effort. But then they might come under more scrutiny...

He really sounded like he didn't agree with that decision.
Oh is wanting it to sound like he didn’t agree with it so people don’t realise what a terrible fuckup he made. It would be hard to believe the incoming coach didn’t have the biggest say in whether or not he keeps his most important player.

I can’t stand JD and legitimately hope he fails.

I wouldn’t give Cobbo more than a five, he made more mistakes than anything. Reminded me of watching Isaako out there. I’m sure he’s got talent and he’ll be a goer, but last night was not his night in attack, his defence was better though.

I assume Kelly will be picked to partner Reynolds, so Billy should be the 9 and Turpin should be 14 next week.

Roberts, Kennedy and Robati should only make the team if there are no other options.

I'd be very happy to see Kelly with Reynolds next week, with Billy at 9. Probably prefer Paix at 14 though.

There’s a few posts in this thread not naming Turpin as next weeks 9. After such a decent team performance I would be cautious to drop any of the starters except for bringing Adam back in. If that means Kelly misses out or Walters gets benched that’s tough luck for them but I think Turpin earned another shot. Especially if defence is our priority at this stage.

His effort to dive on the ball near our line with 9 minutes to go has gone almost unmentioned save a few people in the live thread.

They see what they want to see. Or rather, don’t.

The thing that I liked about the kicking game was that it at least showed that there was a plan. The bomb to Sauce's wing knowing that he would not contest the ball in the air therefore giving Cobbo an opportunity.

The execution was the let down either through Kelly leaving the kick short of the line or Cobbo's hands. But it still could have led to a couple of tries. It showed some tactical planning which is a refreshing change. I think that may become a real weapon as the season progresses with Reynolds kicking.

Kotoni had a bit of an error ridden shocker by his standards, but he and Herbie got about the same amount of ball. I don't think we can blame the halves for much.

Staggs: 16 receipts, 10 passes. 8 runs, 79 metres.
Farnworth: 15 receipts, 5 passes. 10 runs, 76 metres.

They both defended well. Herbie made more tackles and missed fewer, Kotoni defused a kick.

We've come to expect a higher standard from Kotoni than Herbie. Hence why everyone's saying he had a pretty ordinary game. They both contributed to the win with strong defence.
