POST GAME Round 1 - Broncos vs Eels

They build a house of cards, show 'moments of brilliance' until the other team gets over the line and its all downhill from there. Yeah everyones got that new season optimism, want to blame the refs for one the got away. When you're up 18-0, then stop scoring while letting the other team run in 24, bit much to be blaming refs for the loss. Likewise, new rules apply to all teams, not just Broncos. Hate the be a downer, I've just heard this broken record too many times.

I bet if Bullemore had the same mins, he would have churned out alot more.
Kid was in beast mode for his short stint out there (esp the tough carries out from our own goal line)..liking him already.
It was rediculous that he only got 15... Patty was absolutely out on his feet and a few others could have used a spell too.

Bull is really suited to the modern game. Lets see how he goes playing 2 20 min stints and go from there.

Injuries

Arse-luck tries

Dogshit refereeing

I just want a game where only one of these happen to us

Outstanding effort, hard to fault anyone too much, save for Milford with some atrocious kicking options.

Turps is God, the bunker is Satan

sorry to my apartment block neighbours for screaming obscenities at midnight

What’s the latest on Coates and Asiata?

You raise a really good point here. It felt like Bullemore was on then off in a heartbeat. Kev should have used him to give Carrigan a rest.

As one of Turpin's harsher critics, he really surprised me. I felt he was outstanding tonight. His defence was unbelievable, especially the way he dropped players by taking their legs out. Great technique. Looking forward to seeing him get even better.

It was also so refreshing to watch the ball get out wide consistently and effectively. For me that was a major improvement on recent years and we looked threatening most times we did. What a relief. Thanks Kevvie. Farnworth is turning into a really good centre. Asiata is a great buy. I thought we lost a lot of drive and direction when he went off. A turning point for me. A big improvement from Milford. Terrific first half. He's only going to get better.

A totally different team to last year. Really liked the football and the first Broncos game I have enjoyed in a long while. Can't wait until next week, and this time, for the right reasons. When Hass returns, we will go up a level. Again, can't wait.

Our terrible luck with injuries is depressing. Really depressing. For mine that is where we lost the match tonight - losing that amount of talent and experience in the middle, plus bodies. The guys were just exhausted. No wonder we faded in the 2nd half yet importantly, nobody gave up. Haven't seen that in a long while.

On tonight's performance, things are looking good. I'm genuinely surprised, and it feels really nice.

It's a concern for Brisbane that Eels were truly horrible and still won easily. Gonna be a very long year.

I disagree. Yes, the Eels were horrible, but, I feel a large reason for that is they never expected the commitment and quality attack and defence that hit them. I reckon we really gave it to them and they couldn't handle the pressure and started falling apart. Until our injuries, especially Asiata, who for mine was keeping it all together in the middle. They cruelled us, talent wise and through exhaustion playing 3 down, and T'eo at out of position at centre (who was actually quite good).

As for Milford, he had a terrific first half, dipped for a while in the 2nd then came back strongly. Much better than "average".

If a couple of missed chances went the other way, that could have been a a win. Herbie holds on to the intercept, croft passes it to turpin, we play to the whistle on the gutherson try etc. But the effort was there at least which i do think you need to give kevie some credit for. Unfortunately when we fatigued (not helped by our injuries) we went back to the seibold template: one outs, not running onto the ball, end of set a mid field bomb, no line speed, get marched up the middle of the field etc.

I really cannot understand how turpins try was disallowed. Opacic tried to bat the ball dead but as he did so turpin grounded it. Lets just say, if he was wearing green and red i think it would have been a try.

Turpin, Croft and Milf is the package to go with for the next 5 rounds. Croft looks much stronger physically this season. Also looks to be competing at an improved level (he always had heart). Turpin has been given freedom again too, hes calling the plays much more than Seibold era, which was giving Croft some good space on the next play.

Milford is an odd one, in moments the quicker the game sped up, the better decisions he made. Slow the game back down and he loses that edge. Only way i think to fix it is to have him running on the flanks with agile guys inside and out to stretch the defence.

Not sure this was necessary from Gutherson. Seemed sus to me at the time looked guilty and appeared to fein injury to soften his involvement. Hope the judiciary have a good hard look. His arm and hand helped drive him into the ground after the ball had been placed. He was made look a goose with his positioning in Coates previous try.

He also faked an injury another time, won the penalty and sprung straight back up right as rain.

I like Gutho (mostly due to past SVRL efforts) but he's got a bit of grub about him. That hair isn't doing him any favours either

Imagine having 0 premierships, 0 dally M's, 0 grand final appearances, being unable to make an origin team in your preferred position and choosing to celebrate international women's day by sporting the haircut from Mulan... and yet calling yourself 'King'. Bloke needs to give himself an uppercut.

Also wondering.

The Asiata injury was very strange.

The Coates injury, unfortunately, was largely his own fault. When he scores his first try I thought 'jeez no need for a front flip to put it down all you'll do is hurt yourself', sure enough on the second try the unnecessary flip is what put him in a position to land on his head. Kev needs to pull him up and tell him to just get the ball down, no need for the acrobatics every time - its all risk and downside and no benefit or reason. Hope the young fella is ok and learns from that.
