POST GAME Round 1 - Broncos vs Eels

I thought Croft was really good tonight. Yeah he stuffed a couple up and that isn't good but let's be honest, he was always there, he never gave up and he put his hand up to try and take control in the second half when Milf went missing a bit again.

Croft absolutely deserves his spot for next week, I was impressed.

Fatigue will do that to a team.

We looked good in the first half so there is a lot to be happy about.
Were we fatigued in the 43rd minute when Mead dropped it and kicked off the rubbish to come? We continued to drop it, hand over the pill repeatedly and then started missing tackles. Just like last year...

Look. We were far from perfect, but a bit of luck or another interchange then we win.
There were a couple of crucial lapses of concentration that really cost us.
I tell you now just from that game and the reaction post match we will win more than we lose.
That wasnt a side that was beaten but a side that just couldn't find enough in them to win. They were gutted afterwards, just like last year but for very different reasons. They could smell the win but werent quite good enough. Last year, they knew they lost sometimes before halftime.
People will say it's another 2nd half fade and to a point it is but not from lack of belief. They were scheming to grab the win with their very last touch of the ball, and we're still hitting hard at the end all be it with holes in defence (3 players injured was always going leaves them hurting somewhere).
I'm positive Kevie is going in the right direction but it's now up to them to put that effort into round 2, or risk proving all the nay Sayers right.
For mine Turpin and the spine in general were outstanding, but just lacked the petrol in tank from the players around them to get it done. People will criticise some of Milford's choices in the second half but Kevie has backed him to take those kind of risks and if they keep backing themselves by defending like they did in the first half when they don't come off, they will pay off.

We looked decent when the Eels were playing like ass. 40 minutes of decent... They fixed themselves at halftime and we returned to business as usual. Dropped ball, missed tackles, poor options from our halves in critical moments.

Yeah, so much different to last year...
You're largely correct, but there is a point of difference to last year's fadeouts, which were the injuries. I'm hanging onto hope that if we don't shuffle our backline and limit ourselves to one interchange forward, some of those issues don't appear and we win.

We made the Eels play like ass.

And then horrendous injury luck...yes it was quite like last year.
Early in the second half we were neither tired, nor under pressure. We put ourselves under pressure with poor handling, followed by poor defence and so on and so on.

Totally agree.

Was our defence really that bad though? I can’t even remember the first try but the second one was absolute dogshit and the third was just Fergo being too strong off a set play

Defence wins matches and our defence, particularly when it really matters, is just too soft. We switch off for crucial moments and we are made to pay. It’s been our story for the last 3 or 4 seasons.

As an aside, we obviously built our new training facility on an old burial ground. We just cannot take a trick with injuries.

Mead was outstanding and a few levels above Oates. Turps the same he never stopped. Issako improved his positional play this week and got us out of trouble on a few occasions. Herbie was solid and shaping up to be a no nononsense rock. Lexi actually put in a few good carries and his defence was passable. Milf’s two try assists were magic. Croft defended well at times but offered nothing in attack. Jordon Riki surprised me tonight I expected much better from him.

if we played that game in another six weeks after getting used to Kevvies game plan I think we would have won it.

I hate losing, and especially when there are a few suss decisions determine the game, but overall at least I don’t feel embarrassed with my team’s effort tonight.

P.S. Tesi’s new nickname is ‘The Pope’. Coz he won’t pass the pill.

First try was the dart from dummy half by Mahoney who got under two defenders.

Some rubbish by Carrigan around the tackle, too slow getting back up, making it difficult for our defenders on the line. Was poor play from us, pure and simple.

There are positives and negatives to say about every player, and Croft had both of these too. Probably deserves to play again, unless Dearden puts on 5 try assists or something in QLD cup. If Broncos luck continues, injury train will probably come for him too in the next few weeks anyway.

To a certain extent. But injuries and Eels getting late tackle restarts influenced that.

Need to be better, but that was a solid dig against incredible adversity.
