Round 1 - Eels vs Broncos - Post Match Discussion

The situation isn't too dissimilar to the McCullough mistake earlier in the game.

In that instance, I could understand somebody placing some blame on the receiver. It was still Macca's responsibility to adapt to the situation, but Hannant definitely overran the play.

That was Norman as well. Not McCullough.

m1c I can't buy that argument one bit mate. Reed has every right to assume that a 5/8th that is playing Rugby League at the highest level knows when to pass the ball to an unmarked player 3 metres away. Simple as that.

I think we have our moments mixed up - I'm referring to the first half and Macca's thrown a forward pass from dummy half.

There was a moment later on where Norman should have thrown a pass to Hannant but instead held on and frustrated Big Ben.

He did it again later when he went himself and then offloaded to an off side reed. I think it was one of the last plays of the game

You don't think Reed also can share some blame for over-running the play?

Not one bit, that close to the line it's difficult to time a run then slow down or stop in anticipation the playmaker will dummy. Norman has to learn to pass first in those 2 on 1 situations because there is no way the fullback can make the tackle on Reed therefor the fullback will always tackle the ball carrier and take no dummies.

Definitely not. It was a perfect draw and pass situation. Reed has to assume Norman will pass the ball - so he has to continue on his run, which then leads to him over running the play as Norman gets tackled trying to beat his man.

Personally, I didn't think it was a big deal since the game was ours at this stage and I would've liked to see him beat that last defender for the try. However, I would like to think that if the game wasn't in the bag - he would have passed for sure.

If you try to be as fair as possible there is not much to take away from that game.

The quality and intensity of that game was so far below most of the other games (other than Cowboys v Titans). Two points is the best thing taken out of that and there's only one thing worse than winning those ****fest games and that's losing them.

Here's hoping we've got a lot to improve.

I am glad we are playing the Cowboys next week, as if we played Newcastle, St George, Warriors, Manly or the Storm each of those teams would put 50 on us playing like Friday night. Even the Tigers or Cronulla would put us to shame.

We said almost all the same things last season after our early wins. We were ****, our attack was poor blah blah blah. Most important thing about the early rounds is getting the 2 points and not having injuries.

I can't agree with this at all. Defensively we were outstanding. Parra didn't even look like scoring a try after we gifted them one. If fact correct me if I'm wrong but I think they only forced 1 line drop out (apart from the Wallace-McGuire fiasco). Their attack was hopeless, because of our brilliant defence, and if you look back at the history of Anthony Griffin coached teams you'll know that in the opening rounds of the season, defence is the main focus. And we got it right.

Would we beat Melbourne or Manly right now? We'd be underdogs for sure, but I'd say it's unlikely they'd put 50 on us.

Absolutely. For mine, especially playing without that certain someone, the attack will evolve in good time, on the back of real class and talent in key positions, and a terrific defence.

This can be a very very good team.

i honestly thought norman was pretty good in a game that was never going to offer the halves much.

apparently we were the only team not to concede a line break in round 1. we also only missed 13 tackles for the match ... that is an awesome effort in those conditions.

That's true, but apparently most teams would have put 50 on us, hey subsbligh?
