PRE-GAME Round 1 - Sharks vs Broncos

Kick? More like an AFL-style leap leading with the knees Billy Slater style.

Beale is makeshift at best, he is the kind of player who would be solid for about 4-6 games at Fullback and then his deficiencies would become more transparent and he'd go back to being below average. Similar to Hoffman when he was moved to fullback for different periods with us. I'm keen to see how Holmes goes though!

I wasn't suggesting that Beale should be their fulltime fullback, but if they needed a replacement for 1-2 games Beale could cover quite easily.

It will take sharks a long time to get used to a new offense and val will take time to get used to playing fullback. IF Val wasn't playing rd 1 sharks could do much worse than a guy who is proven to be a competent NRL fullback.

THE NRL have implemented a major crackdown on how coaches announce their team lists each week in bid to reduce the risk of inside information being traded for gambling.
In a timely and unprecedented development, The Sunday Telegraph can reveal all 16 clubs were informed on Saturday of the NRL’s team list overhaul and new rules which states that for the first time, they must name a 21-man squad every Tuesday of the upcoming 2017 season.
The significant revamp emerged as the NRL deals with the latest round of betting allegations laid against Wests Tigers centre Tim Simona and ahead of soon-to-be ratified new rules involving players being banned from all mobile phone use in dressing rooms.
Informed of the team-list changes on Saturday, coaches were told that unlike previous seasons, they will no longer be allowed to use any player who isn’t named within the original 21-man squad, unless a special exemption is granted by the NRL.
The 21-man squad will consist of 17 players named in position, as well as up to four interchange reserves.
Coaches will be permitted to cut their squad back to 19 players 24-hours prior to kick-off, with the final 17-man squad announced one hour before kick-off.
In any other cases where clubs wanted to include a player at late notice they would have to apply to the NRL for a special exemption and outline their case.
This may include bringing in a player from outside the squad if someone in a specialist position such as halfback was injured at training and there was no logical replacement among the reserves.
The NRL hopes the changes will limit the common practice of coaches naming ‘bogus’ teams, including the deliberate ploy of not naming a star player ahead of their comeback from injury or so too, the debut of a rising star.
But overwhelmingly, the NRL’s motivation to limit the opportunity for people both in and outside the game profiting from inside information, is the cause for change.
“The late inclusion of a star player can dramatically affect a team’s chances and market odds of that team,” NRL Integrity Unit boss Nick Weeks said.
“We don’t see this as a major problem in the game at present but we want to reduce the likelihood betting stings based on inside information.”
The team-list shake-up will also draw much interest from fans as well as SuperCoach and Fantasy football players, who are impacted by wholesale team changes shortly before kick-off.
“That is something that frustrates fans and the new system should go a long way to eliminating the practice,” NRL head of football Brian Canavan said.
“There is enormous interests in team lists … Tuesday is easily the busiest day on the nrl.com website because fans want to know who is in and out of their team.”
Canavan added that an exemption did exist within team-list overhaul for clubs to name additional players in their Tuesday squad announcement in circumstances where three or more of their players are selected in a State of Origin match.

So, when people are naming squads, they're going to have to name 21 man squads now :P

What I'm expecting.

A nice early challenge for our pack to prove they are up to it. If they even show a sniff that they are getting on top, Fifuckhead and his merry band of pricks will grub it up faster than you can blink. So not only a test of their footy ability, but their characters under pressure as well.

If I were Bennett, I'd be giving Hunt 1 job: smother Maloney. A few kicks out of dummy half from McC to turn their forwards around early would be useful as well. We also have to go into it mentally prepared knowing the refs will be doing us no favors on the Premiers home turf.

This.

You only have a squad of 25; so essentially every week- someone from our whole squad will play.
1. Name star player returning from injury in the squad for a couple of weeks before his actual comeback.

2. Name rising star in squad for weeks before debut.

Hardly foolproof...

Seems the most miniscule issue to be trying to solve. Who cares if you name a side Tuesday and two guys come in on Sunday.

We want to stop people telling other people these two guys are playing Sunday. Now it will just be these four guys aren't going to play Sunday.

21 is nearly your whole squad- so why not just name your top 25 every week- someone from here will play Sunday.

Because that would completely defeat the purpose. You've gotta name your 1-17 in position and then 4 "extras". The squad of 21 initially named is pretty irrelevant anyway, the real indicator of who has a chance of playing will be the cut-down 19 man squad 24 hours before kick-off.

I still think it's too lenient if I'm being honest, I think the teams should be forced to name a 19 man squad on Tuesday, finalise the 17 man squad 24 hours before kick-off. If someone gets injured in that 24 hour time frame, they're only allowed to bring in the 18th or 19th man that were named on Tuesday.

They're should also be heavy fines to teams that show a continual disregard for the initial 1-17 named. Not necessarily movement within the 1-17 but from someone being named only to be dropped an hour before kickoff. An example coming up could be billy slater's return he may continually get named at 1 or Munster named at 1 only for it to change an hour before kick off for several weeks in a row.

Whether you think it matters or not there is massive interest in the game from a betting and fantasy football point of view so it does matter to the wider market

With Edrick Lee signing with the Sharks I imagine Beale will go back to his bench role.

1. Valentine Holmes
2. Sosaia Feki
3. Jack Bird
4. Ricky Leutele
5. Edrick Lee
6. James Maloney
7. Chad Townsend
8. Andrew Fifita
9. Jayden Brailey / Daniel Mortimer / Manaia Cherrington / James Segeyaro / ??
10. Matt Prior
11. Luke Lewis
12. Wade Graham
13. Paul Gallen (c)

14. Gerard Beale
15. Chris Heighington
16. Jayson Bukuya
17. Sam Tagataese

That's still a dangerous team, we're going to need to bring our A game in Round 1 if we want to start the season on a high note.

isn't that Brailey kid likely to start at hooker (unless they are able to get Segeyaro)

I have no idea, it's certainly possible.
It looks like they'll go with Brailey starting and Brown off the bench (WCC team) however that might change with Beale likely being demoted.
