POST GAME Round 10 - Cowboys vs Broncos

Dissapointed to lose of course but I don't think it was all that bad. The Cowboys won the forward battle and the combination of Thurston/Morgan/Coote proved the difference in the end. On a positive note we didn't drop our heads once and went down fighting and showed some great goal line defense. The score blew out a bit I don't think the 11 point margin was a true reflection of the contest.

Liking what I've seen from Boyd his performance tonight was a step up from last week and he looked more dangerous with the ball and in hand. Missing McGuire sucked and hit us badly in the forward stocks which proved our downfall in the end.

I'm not sure I'd put Kahu in that group. The ball landed 3 players in. Kahu still needs to cover the winger.

Fair enough. I may have misplaced blame there in that he was part of the ground tackle and assumed it was his to contest and didn't. Haven't seen the replay.

We gave them room, we made some poor defensive reads and soft tackles. I thought Morgan, good player that he is, was nowhere near the star they made him out on the commentary. It was us, not him, that made him look good through errors .. and giving Thurston time and space ... sheesh! Thurston was the difference and again, we let him.

And why the Cooper try (I think it was Cooper) from the bomb, why wasn't the bomb contested. Another error.

Milford was great in attack, but his defence needs a little work.

First game ive been impressed with Milford as a 6. Showed promise tonight. However, his defence is shocking. 3 tries where Morgan beat him 1 on 1. He pretty much cost us the game with his defence on the line. We need to hide him better.

Blair is just so shit. I cant say much more. I was shocked when Bennett brought him here and I still dont see anything in him at all. He is one of the most overrated players i have ever seen. Absolute nuffie.

Our line speed was quite good in the first half but non-existent in the second.
why was that try in the second half called back? (was on the far side from where I sat.).
I felt it was our game until the last 5 minutes where the toll of possession and the scoreboard showed.
Until that point I felt that bar the two dropped balls and some dubious ref calls were all that separated us.
Molo actually defended well and made a really good run at one point happy with him bar the dropped ball.
Don't quite feel him or offa are ready for the origin period though.

I don't think people realise how important tonight's game was for us. We truly needed the win tonight because the next 2 months is going to tear our team apart (Origin) and we need every win we can get.

The first 20 minutes we were superb, great line speed, intensity was there, attack was fast and flowing, defense was rock solid, it was coming together beautifully, but we took the foot off the pedal after Blair's knock on after it was 12-0 and from there we weren't in it.

Our defense was great in patches, Milford's defense tonight was dreadful, Morgan had such a field day running at him it was laughable, his defense needs to improve and his attack was, yeah ok. Hunt was quiet in attack but his kicking game tonight was better than usual.

Disappointed with this loss TBH, I just think it may come back to haunt us over the Origin 2 month period where we need wins.

Reed was in front of the kicker.

It would have been a great try if he wasn't. I wonder what the anti-Maranta brigade thought of his finish?

The bomb came down several players in from the sideline, Hunt did his best to compete with Cooper but unfortunately he looked like a mushroom next to a skyscraper. Not surprising he chose to try and tackle him on the ground instead.

Can we all take a moment to appreciate how good Maranta and Kahu were?

After last nights performance I'm perfectly happy with them being our #1 choice wingers over the next couple of years, both young, safe as houses under high balls, making good metres out of our end and constantly improving their attack / finishing ability.

I sacrificed sleep to watch the game after i got home last night.

Is Blair trying to get another worst buy award on his mantle. He has one when he left the Storm. He is the leading contender this year as well.

Milford showed some good signs.

Hunt started well, but it is hard for a halfback to shine when you only have 39% possession.

We badly missed McGuire.

I loved that pass from Boyd that put Reed away before we scored our first try.

Kahu should be signed immediately... He continues to show how good he is. Last night it was under the high ball and his finishing ability. He should cement one center position when Hodges goes.

Macca was pretty good last night too.

This is weird.

I still believe we're short at least one really big prop.

McGuire and Thaiday provide plenty of thrust in the middle but these days you really need a bigger body that is hard for the defence to contain, a real line-bender !

I was hoping Garbutt might have been 'the one' but so far he seems to be falling short of the mark.

Our back row are fantastic and are genuinely one of the best in the comp, so we really only need to get this bigger prop to make us a fantastic pack that can provide our halves the meters to do their thing.

Frustrating loss. As usual some positives as well as negatives to come out of it.

Adam Blair seems to be a dud and at the very least deserves a stint in Qld cup. If he can’t shine there ,well he certainly does not deserve another run in NRL.

Our line speed again was poor in the second half especially. Someone on this blog predicted JT would engineer multiple restarts, if given enough chances in the attacking zone. So true.

Our backline attack showed some surprising potency at times ,especially with Milford. I hope his confidence continues to grow. We should however take a lesson from JT and try to work for a few more restarts when we get near the try line. For instance that pass that Thaiday threw to Oates or someone when we were right on the attack was just reckless.

One thing that is really starting to piss me off is the way every time Hunt kicks the ball on the last , the opposing tackler thinks he has a right to make some sort of contact on him , no matter how late. This make it impossible for him to try and run his players on side when he puts up a high ball.

On the cowboy’s side , how good was Coote? They did give us a lesson in mistake free footy. Hope JT keeps this form for origin. Morgan would not be out of place in a maroon jumper.

Sport always comes down to momentum. You will never see a momentum killer any more so than Blair dropping the ball. It would be forgivable had he been able to make up for it in some other capacity. Truth is he is not a front rower. Not once all year have I seen him even close to bending the line. Enough said there, he just isn't the worthy of the position.

Damn near everyone else had respectable games. Our wingers were rock solid. Boyd looked way better and even Hunts kicking was better than normal. Our back row looked strong. That said, we just could not get the ball and you can't win against JT and gang when they have the rock for over 60%.

Yeah I agree that Milford needs to improve his defense but really, where is the help. Same said when Hunt gets over run on the other try.

I truly believe that if Josh is on that side it is a different outcome on the night.

Bummer to lose, but not something to hang your head about.

The Blair drop ball was the turning point in the first half, but did people people see with 10 minutes to go on the 3rd Macca kicking when it was still 20 all and from there on we were out of the game.

I saw that, he was going for a 40/20 but didn't strike it properly and it propelled to high in the air and was caught on their 30 metre line on the full - that really killed us. Ben Hunt's chip and chase inside our own half didn't help either, I know he was trying but it just wasn't on. We clearly missed McGuire tonight, I thought Molo's defence was excellent but everything else he did was rubbish.

The thing that really pissed me off tonight was our line speed. We were giving them 10 metres before they even hit our line and then once they hit it, they made another 5 metres or more, they just pinned us down there in the second half. I actually thought Ben Hunt's kicking game improved a fair bit, i.e. he had more kicks that were 8+ out of ten, but then he had a few kicks that were less then 5. Milford's defence was pretty abysmal, but his attack is starting to look hot. I can't believe they didn't go upstairs for Reed's offside....would have been so happy to see Maranta grab a hatrick! :P
