POST GAME [Round 11, 2023] Broncos vs Storm

Reffed out of the game. We did well not to capitulate without Reynolds and the 3 bins. Made life hard for ourselves with our poor handling - storm just lobbed it up and we gave it back via handling errors. We didn't really look like we had much idea in attack apart from the bomb, which didn't really trouble them at all.

I've no idea what a hip drop is and how it's ruled. My understanding was essentially you can't try and ground a player from behind by pulling him down with your hands anywhere between the knee and the hip. Extra bad points if you leave the ground and are mid air trying to bring them down. Is that in the ball park? Cause by that definition I thought Carrigan was guilty of that, but all and sundry including Bellamy are saying he was hard done by?

The game seriously needs to wake the **** up on these phantom hip drop sin bins, ruining a game over shit no one understands is a terrible idea and defending it is lunacy.

Conceded 2 tries while we had 12 players. Only lost by 8 without our main kicker and playmaker. I think our defence was pretty good.

We got 60 put on us last year by this team...
Our defence overall is pretty good but not premiership worthy. I reckon if we didn't catch them a week after they'd been flogged, we would've won.

It's the swinging motion and pulling down with body weight on back of legs.

NRL said they wanted players to slide down legs and avoid 'dropping' weight on the legs.

Momentum did cause Patty to swing around the back, but what he did well was slide down with arms and hands and did not reef down from the top with all his weight.

Which clearly Kev and Bellamy saw, as well as the MRC who are apparently clearing him.

Unfortunately, if players stay down like NAS did, seems you'll get rewarded.

I just liked how he talked about us wanting to play football but weren't allowed to (he didnt say weren't allowed to, but that was implied)... like we've been doing all year.

and that tonight's game wasnt football..

And then the backhanded compliment of "good luck to them".

All referencing that playing the storm is a fucking shit show if the ref has no balls ... manly stooped down to their level a couple weeks back and dived more than them to get the win.

I wouldve liked it if Kevvie said something like if that's how they want football to look then I'll have to start coaching it like that... but he went back to us wanting to play our type of football ie. Free flowing and nice on the eye... rather than that absolute shit show the ginger flog pulled together last night
Yeh Kevvie's comments reminded me at the time of Paul Kelly's line "there were two teams out there, but only one of them were playing cricket (footy)". That was the case last night. The opposition dived, stood offside, lay all over us niggled, slowed the play down (when we had the ball) and generally removed all semblance of a footy game, and were allowed to do it. All for the sake of two points.

It's telling that the two captains challenges we were allowed to make were upheld.

Yes, we did get outsmarted by Bellyache - the game lasted almost 2 hours with all the manufactured stoppages. He knew what he was doing. He knew his team would not be able to go toe to toe with our power so he used gamesmanship and a very low form at that.

Again, as Kevvie said - is that the sort of game we want to put on at prime time viewing?

The one small comfort I have this morning, is that by the time this $50 is handed to my boss, it will have been tucked deep in my undies for at least a few hours.

I'm always a little torn on my opinion of our performance after losses like this.

On one hand Melbourne are always such a professional clincial outfit and there really is no shame in going down to them by 8 in Melbourne. Given we lost out halfback early and played a quarter of the game with 12 men you can't fault our effort.

On the other hand Melbourne probably aren't the force they once were and our inability to defuse kicks and some silly mistakes (Herbie lifting Hughes over the sideline is given a penalty every day of the week regardless of if you agree with it or not) really is frusterating.

For me that probably just confirms what my suspicions that yes we are a top 8 team but no we aren't up there with the best. With a full strength team (Reynolds and Oates) possibly we could be a contender but if injuries/suspensions hit our chances will dive.

Some decision's that were a bit "meh" but if im a neutral supporter I'm probably questioning if Flegs took out the marker in the Paix try. As much as i hate to admit it I'm sure we'll get our turn for a favourable call at some stage.

Moving forward i don't really know what else we can do to contend with the top teams? We need some more strike from our centres they've been dissapointing for me. Possibly consider taking Capewell off after 50 and putting a strike backrower on the last 30 (could Piakura fill that roll)? Apart from that just need to improve out completion rate and cut the dumb footy out.

Badel reporting no charge for Patty.

The refs and bunkers have no clue what they are doing.
This ⬆️.
Even Petey boy agrees…. You know it was a terrible call when a bloke like Petey agrees

With the game how it is right now, you have to take every advantage possible, and test the ref as much as possible.

Play the ball off the mark to gain advantage and take the markers out of the game, every sign of contact needs to overexaggerated as this is currently being rewarded. These are the sort of things that the best teams last few years have got away with and been better at than everyone else.

Not ref related, kick defusal. Top teams do not concede so many garbage 'lucky' tries to high kicks in the corner. We gotta get more people around the ball to stop knock backs for easy tries etc.

Now with the first point, I'd be amazed if we were able to do that and get away with it. Just last night Pat got told to go back and play the ball on the mark a few mins before Hughes went 2m outside of the ruck to setup their first try.

But on the kick pressure penalty we got Fleg penalised for, we had several times we got prevented from applying pressure, but nobody threw themselves to the ground.

OK - so my interpretation isn't far off. There is a moment where Pat is entirely off the ground while grabbing around the thighs and pulling down/backward. Obviously it is split second and more obvious in slow mo but it isn't far off the definition.

Don't get me wrong, not defending the decision, but can see where the confusion comes in. It's another shoulder charge scenario, it will take a season or so to change tackling habits.

Oh 100% see where the confusion comes from, problem is its confusion caused by the NRL.

You've got someone the size of NAS breaking the line, momentum is going to cause blokes to swing around.

Only common denominator so far though has been player gets up and plays the ball, nothing usually happens. Player stays down and very likely you're heading to the bin.

I think the issue with it all is there is no room for common sense in the decision making. Pat ended up off the ground for a second purely based on the momentum of hitting a 130kg, 6ft 7 inch footballer. The replay clearly shows he didn't land on him with any real weight.

Gtfo of here.
It's not the loss to the Storm you merkin, it's the state of the game.

I've had enough of it. I've been a Bronco supporter since 88 and today I walk away from the game, not because I have stopped loving the broncos, but because these fuckwits who run the game have ruined it.

Now carry on being a clown and talking rubbish.

Quit and go then you old fart. Nobody cares about your bullshit excuses or will miss you. Make sure you don't come back here tho when this eventually team wins the comp. I'll remember your username, you quitting little biatch

Haha you whipper snapper, get the **** off my lawn and go support the Storm where you belong.

I was supporting the broncos when you were still swimming in your old man's balls.
Now show some respect and sit your ass down.

I'm with you....(except take it easy with the old fart jibes. Words can hurt you know...)

But yes...to the emotional few who have declared they're done......don't let the door hit you on the arse on the way out.
...and once you're out
their aint no coming back in.
