POST GAME [Round 11, 2023] Broncos vs Storm

Gus should have got ten in the bin for repeating 'That's a try!' a thousand times like an absolute gronk.

Also I don't understand this 'denied the best try of his career' narrative that's floating around Coates. I mean, it was fine? Scoop, couple of fends, wins the race to the line. If not standard winger stuff, not particularly uncommon.

Live, I thought there were a bunch of players close by that could have scrambled & stopped Coates before he took off. But they heard the whistle and stopped. Haven't watched the replay though.

Fmd these "shoulder charges" are just great shots and shouldn't even be illegal.
If you hit high in the process you go to the bin, otherwise it's a fantastic tackle, especially when its a smaller guy smashing a bigger guy trying to score.

The optics don't look too good for the mother at home wondering whether or not it's safe to allow little Johnny to play Rugby League after she tunes in on the Friday night and sees a 100kg backrower launching with his shoulder at some blokes jaw and the only real thing that happened is "the player got it wrong".

Thanks Graham... that makes it all better... fuckwit

How does the bunker make an error when they have all the time in the world to look at video ... and then get it wrong and influence the game

Annesley has confirmed that the Bunker fucked us. he said:

“Certainly the decision with Carrigan hasn’t helped the clarity around hip-drops, but it was simply an error by the Bunker,”

“There are effectively three elements to a hip drop.

“They are a “grab”, where a defender grabs hold of the ball carrier; a “twist”, they rotate their body when falling to the ground, and the “drop”, they drop the bulk of their body weight falling directly onto the legs.

“In the Carrigan incident two of those three elements were there, but the bulk of the body weight did not fall directly on (Asofa-Solomona’s) legs.

“If the Bunker had been in any doubt about all three elements, they should have placed it on report, but Carrigan should not have been sin-binned.

“Even though he made contact with the legs, most of his body weight was absorbed by the ground.

“What Carrigan did on Thursday night wasn’t a hip drop.”

So everything Welch did on Cobbo... looks like the bunker "simply made another error" on that one too

Does Welch actually land on him though? I watched the footage and despite making contact when he swings around I don't think he traps any part of his body underneath him. He actually ends up towards the right of Cobbo from what I saw.

Didn't get to watch the game last night and just finished watching it already knowing the score so could watch other things beside the immediate ruck. On at least 3 occasions before the camera had to pan in to the play the ball close up the entire Storm line was already 3-4 steps in front of the ref as the ball hit the ground in the play the ball, all good no penalties.

In the second half on the first tackle of one set the Broncos player who received the ball was hit right on the advantage line by 3 Storm defenders one of whom was Welch. This was from a pass from the ground to a player running onto the ball. This means that I'll use Welch as the example can accelerate from a standing start, on grass, after more than 40 minutes of a pretty quick game, to cover 10 m in just on a second. This is equivalent acceleration to Usain Bolt, with spikes and using a starting block on a synthetic track and being fresh from a warm up. It obviously can't happen and the Storm players left early, again all good no penalty.

Huge effort by the guys to keep in it with the lopsided six agains and one sided reffing. We absolutely owned their forward pack in the first half and really took a hit when Reynolds came off.

Surely Capewell is on borrowed time as a starter. His defence and positioning has become a liability and he looks gassed after about 20 minutes. Surely someone like Hetherington should be in the run on team with Capewell starting on the bench.

When in our own half someone needs to get in Reece Walsh's ear about taking the high percentage option and just diving on the ball instead of the low percentage scoop up on the run for a miracle break/try. Besides that he was just shredding the Storm defence with some of his runs.

Bellamy looked bleak in their presser because he now knows his team won't be playing in the GF. With our 7 and captain gone early in the game and with the amount of 6 agains his team got gifted and time they were allowed to hold down in the ruck they really should have put us to the sword.

Anyway always drives me mad when we lose to the Storm scum but besides a few brain explosions from Herbie and Flegler our effort was outstanding. Also good to see Kev finally starting to get pissed with some of the dud reffing and the useless bunker.

So we will see the bunker official dropped for a week then?

His right leg is off the ground and left bowed matrix style... so what's supporting his body weight??

He stays that way until Cobbo goes to ground i.e. the drop... the only thing preventing a trapped limb is Cobbo's leg staying straight and not buckling under 105kg. Although it is basically trapped in the image below, because where can it go other than buckling under the weight, which is what eventually happens.

It's basically the same as Hopgood on Paix and is applying pressure to the outside of Cobbo's knee, which can cause MCL injuries.

That's still fine, it all comes down to where his hip lands on the surface. You can make contact with the leg but as long as you slide off and don't trap it, it's deemed an appropriate tackle.

So again, look where he lands. Does the full weight of his body land on Cobbo's legs? From what I saw, he ends up on the other side of him.

He's landing on his left leg in the below image... the same leg he had trapped and was applying his body weight to

Is he? Notice Christian's right leg and how he's able to pivot his body so his body weight is actually on his shoulder and he levers his lower body off the ground to avoid trapping the leg. If you literally go the next frame, Selwyn is easily able to move his leg indicating it wasn't trapped therefore not a hip drop.

EDIT: This took way longer to upload than it should have - but you guys can be the judge.

If they really want to continue with this rubbish, just make it as simple as possible and as clear as possible.

Basically, take an immediate injury out of the equation unless it is deemed a deliberate act. If it is a clear deliberate act that is verifiable, that’s a sin bin, regardless of the result.

Also, if a player goes down holding his leg / neck / head or any other part, he automatically goes off for 20 minutes AND it costs an interchange. Make it more if you have to. Yes this is harsh but it is black and white. If it is a forward between minutes 15 and 60, he is gone for the game regardless. Do it for 6 weeks and see how it goes.

I feel confident diving will miraculously disappear.

Come on man, don’t pretend like you can understand what a hip drop is when the guys who are running the show don’t even know.

I've already said I'm not a fan of the crackdown, but the still image is misleading and it was a legitimate tackle.

Two wrongs don't make a right.

Drop Gerard Sutton!? BAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHA

I tell you now that it was NOT "simply" a mistake. Regardless of the underlying reason, the result of the game is nothing "simple".

Apropos Sutton, his brother has strong connections with Melbourne, no? 🤔

The thing is, any tackle looks bad to Johnny's mum when it go's wrong.
Bin a bloke if he gets it wrong, that's enough of a deterrent to make sure he gets it right, and the players know how detrimental it is to be down a man on the field.

Increase the punishment for repeat offenders.
The tackle is great when done right ( which is most of the time).
