Round 11 - Bulldogs vs. Broncos - Pre-Match Discussion

I have no idea why Wallace doesn't try and put in a few more grubbers during a match to earn a repeat set. As much as I think he sucks, if my memory serves me well, he actually has a decent grubber in him.

The simple grubber is something we've underused for a long time now IMO. Bring back Alfie!
He does have a good grubber, for whatever reason we're not using it.

Because the risk is far more greater than it was pre-2012.

These days if the ball goes dead, the opposition gets to take a quick tap on the 20m line and it gives them all the momentum.

Funny about that, almost like he has no idea either.

Aren't we talking about both set play kicks or just as important, someone always always on the ball, ready to chase the kick

Maybe consistent kicking like that isn't part of the game plan, which would be odd. It can be so effective it should be used often.

Was Granville's a set play, or just vision and a support runner?

Granville's looked like an off-the-cuff play to me. Good on him.

Don't all the top teams use them regularly. Maybe the kicker gets in lots and lots of practice

In fairness, the Titans made a complete mess of Granville's kick. It was a good option but the kick execution wasn't that great... the titans winger and fullback made it look much better than it was.

Alec - What chip kicks are you referring to? Examples?

The lower trajectory ones, like Yow Yeh, Folau and Reed have scored from. Reed is actually pretty good under the high ball, usually better than whoever he's up against, and he seems to steal those even more than the higher ones.

That's true, but isn't there always a good dose of luck with any kick?

They're called cross field kicks Alec - we use those all the time.

Watching DCE last night for Manly, he really mixed it up quite a bit with his kicking, and looked awesome out there, completely outplayed Cronk.

Nah, we bomb to the wings, they are always really high. We bomb everywhere. I want more of a chip to the wings.

Wallace should be trying to land them in-between the defenders, and our players should be running in at an angle. He needs to kick them a bit closer to the line too IMO.

... and not just Wallace

He does both, cross field kicks are what he does inside the opposition 20 and has been doing them since his debut and to a fair degree of success.

Basically what I want kicks in the air with less height than the typical bomb, let our players have a better chance of catching them.
I also want more grubber kicks. Not the abysmal McCullough ones, something from a half, at least 5 metres out, either forcing a repeat set or having chasers chase it.

Neither of those have happened in ages. It's always a midfield bomb or a bomb to to the wings.
