Round 11 - Bulldogs vs. Broncos - Pre-Match Discussion

Both happened last week and the weekend before.

And most likely the weekend before that, and the weekend before that, in fact it's happened all season.

Some attacking set play kicks elsewhere than in the opposition's 20 would be good to see

I seriously can't remember.

Usually because the few times we were in the opposition's 20 last week we would receive a penalty and either score a try, kick a penalty goal or lose the ball.

Two examples I can think of right away...

1. The in-field kick which Gordon spilt and Maranta ended up with running back on the inside. I watched this play at least 15 times so I know it well.

2. Obviously the Granville example.

Most kicks we weren't in position and were mid-field bombs into corners (right call and worked a treat) or big long distance kicks.

The one time one of our kicks went over a dead ball line, it ended in the Titans lone try of the evening.

Watching DCE last night for Manly, he really mixed it up quite a bit with his kicking, and looked awesome out there, completely outplayed Cronk.
Except Wallace has one up on DCE this week with a win.

It proves that even though we have average halves we can still win. Our team played like a team that night, to me there really weren't any standout individuals. Bulldogs will be a better test I reckon, I sure as hell hope we win this one damn it. Some consistency Broncs!

Yes indeed - like mixing it up with left and right side attack: 2nd man plays on both sides, short kicks behind the line with runners chasing on an angle, cross field kicks inside AND outside the opposition 20, forwards always looking to offload, ball carrier always having a support runner or 2 ....

That's consistency - yet to see it except for the first game against the Titans and 2nd half v Storm.

I actually think we play way too much ad hoc stuff - whatever someone feels like doing at the time and hope for the best

Enjoyed the video clip with Granville working out with the team....I expect we will turn up ready to play this weekend and I'm optimistic about the team for a change. I reckon we've had an injection of enthusiasm with Granville in although I do not expect a messianic performance from him. He just seemed to pick up the pace for us and if it continues then the other guys might get a little more time to create. Here's hoping.

Okay a distinction needs to be made here.

A bomb - What Wallace usually kicks when we're 30-50m out from the line and usually directed down the left hand fringe for Reed to race for.

A cross-field kick. Attempted inside the opposition 10-20m zone and directed usually out towards Reeds fringe.

In which case, yes we abuse the cross field kicks too much, however, we do so usually because of how the set plays out. That needs to be addressed before the kick options are.

Alec - What chip kicks are you referring to? Examples?

The lower trajectory ones, like Yow Yeh, Folau and Reed have scored from. Reed is actually pretty good under the high ball, usually better than whoever he's up against, and he seems to steal those even more than the higher ones.

They're called cross field kicks Alec - we use those all the time.

Nah, we bomb to the wings, they are always really high. We bomb everywhere. I want more of a chip to the wings.

I name them "low cross field kicks" it's not really a chip kick in a classic sense of the term IMO ..... not really just a cross field kick either, as this could be confused and is often decribed as a "bomb"

I agree that one of Reeds redeeming features is ability to successfully contest the ball the high ball as well as these "low cross field kicks"

Totally agree. The speed he adds completely changes our attack. Even basic attacking structures are successful when the defence is on the back foot and don't have time to get there formations right

Confirmed that Hodges is playing. Big plus as long as Hodges plays the entire 80mins and doesnt pick up another injury.

Kemp and Lui drop off the bench.

Because the risk is far more greater than it was pre-2012.

These days if the ball goes dead, the opposition gets to take a quick tap on the 20m line and it gives them all the momentum.

A first grade halfback shouldn't be kicking grubbers dead from 10m out. Worst case scenario it doesn't get far in goal and the fullback/whoever can dive into the field of play. Do it consistently well and the reward is great ... back to back sets through drop outs.

I will look forward to see if the Dogs target his ribs just to make sure they are all ok

Looking forward to seeing how Granville backs up
