POST GAME [Round 12, 2023] Broncos vs Panthers

I’m going against the trend and say I was pleased about how we went tonight, sure I’m disappointed we lost but we played the full 80 just got outplayed by a brilliant team who nailed their game plan.

Sure we missed chances and made mistakes but we played a full game especially in defence. They could have ran away with it but if anything our defence got better as it went on.

This is where this team is right now, against average defence and with momentum we win and win well but get into a grind with the best we are eventually outplayed.

compounding errors is my only gripe, we keep making mistakes followed by an immediate penalty which lead to points and we just can’t keep doing that
I don't think we were out played at all. A few moments didn't go our way and that was the difference. They had 60% of the ball and only scored two tries. We were better defensively than they were tonight. We were probably better in attack as well. Your right, it was our own errors that cost us

I'm bewildered why everyone is going on about the double movement and the Staggs no try when the most blatant was the Walsh no try because Kobe "lost the ball forward into the back of the Penrith defender's head". At no time does Kobe lose control. The ball is firmly in his grasp and knocked out -backwards when it collides with the Riff defender's head.

Nevertheless, our poor handling (two in a row that lead to a Riff try) and our stupid ill-discipline that gives away needless penalties is what cost us. Capewell's stupid penalty early on stopped our momentum. It also allowed the Riff to march down field and score their first try. The numpty does it every frikkin week. He can't blame fatigue either as it was early in the first half.

He really is a weapons grade liability now. If it's not stupid, needless penalties, it's poor defence. I really don't see the trade off for his 'experience' is worth it now. I think he's become worse than Alex Glenn in that spot.

Madden went better and was mostly bombing to where Reyno would, but he was let down by Mam's poor involvement. I wonder how bad his injury is hobbling him? He's not been right since 4 or 5 weeks ago when he took that knock to his knee.

Pat Carrigan was immense and his effort (64ish tackles) was a great sign for origin. I just hope he does not burn out during the origin series. If he's still in that form come September we're a big shout.

Somebody on here who has lines of communication to Kevvie needs to shout long and hard and tell him to spend as much time working out how to use his bench as effectively as he does on working on our defence. Get back to Flegs coming on after 20. let Jensen start with Pat and Payne. Marty is worth no more than 15 minutes.

Lastly, I hope we learned how to 'cheat' legally form the Riff last night. They consistently slowed the ruck down and gave away 6 agains when their defence was not set. But they were always set in time to not commit a third ruck infringement in a row and avoid the sin bin. They did this on a few occasions and got away with it every time. Mind you it's easy to do if you're getting the '50/50' calls in your favour.

Does anyone know if some of our players don't make the 18 for origin will they be able to travel to NZ to play? I cant see Billy having these players in origin camp and letting them go for the weekend before a game. I think we will lose a majority of our stars for this one simply because we are playing in NZ
I hope not. NZ isn't that far.

I don't have much left to give this sport. The refs are being manipulated by teams like the Panthers and Storm. If every player moves up before the play the ball has cleared the ruck, they seem to just allow it? I don't even think the refs understand or know the rules. The Panthers were offside, one foot behind the ref all night and rushing up way too early.

Also why should a player not look at who is in front of him before jumping? It would be stupid not to.

And Walsh outsmarted the rules by allowing Yeo to get in goal. If Yeo reaches out and scores it's a try but because he didn't it's not a try scoring opportunity? It absolutely was and if the ref had of called held earlier it wouldn't have been an issue. I'm tired of the NRL and it's games being decided by the refs and not the players on the field. It's an absolute joke.

Thanks Pete. I thought this was going to be a case of people over reacting but it’s actually pretty bad

And Luai would be panicking under any other administration in rugby league history ... under the current one, he wouldn’t have a care in the world, since he knows it very hard to get suspended now (unless you're a Bronco of course)

Never said we lost because of the refereeing.

penrith were better and deserved to win even though we showed a ton of heart.

my issue is that every week there is inconsistency and ineptitude that ruins games and takes the results away from the players on the field. It doesn’t just happen to us, either.
Exactly my opinion as well.

I can handle a loss.
I can't handle games being swung by poor officiating.

The worst bit, is we are finally seeing consistency, but that consistency is in the ref's doing stupid shit week in week out.

Has the bunker ever been overruled by a ref before?
I mean literally ever?

Why send it to the bunker at all if you can just overrule the guy with all the cameras technology at their disposal.

If they are serious about respect for Refs he should be banned. I said it in the comms thread but that wouldn't be tolerated in Superleague. You can't touch an official.

if you watch that try from the play the ball, you will notice that the 2nd pass was held onto before passing - can not remember who it was, but he ran behind a player in the line then passes - this is automatically a penalty - not sure why it was not discussed - but was quite blatant

It's pretty simple. turuva was heading of the sideline he was getting pushed sidewards, how does he manage to get the ball to the line if he doesn't promote it
Nor to mention Luai running behind his own player. It's been ruled as a black and white call all year but the bunker didn't even consider it.

That call for the Walsh interference on the fullback, looks wrong to me... just had a look at the live speed and slomo and it looks like a play on, and try. Really don't care either way just calling it like I see it.

Interesting that the ref was giving guidance to the bunker though... the rules are a mess with the NRL.

Not sure if it's been brought up but Kevvie was again questioning the officiating in regards to Staggs disallowed try and Walsh getting penalised.

He said it without going out of line but it's interesting he is now speaking up.

There doesn't seem to be a standout team this year, if the Broncs find themselves in the top 4 with a little bit of luck then anything is possible it seems.

Brave effort from the guys........although, if we are to be real premiership contenders, we have to be better than that. At the end of the day, we were only 2 players short on being a full strength team.

In general our spine (even at full strength) lacks somewhat the creative ability to work towards points. We have plenty of individuals who can make something out of nothing........but in general, we look impotent in attack.

Thought Jock madden held his own. Was disappointed in Ezra's lack of creativeness... Walsh to a degree didn't get involved enough for mine.

Thought Paix did absolutely nothing. I still don't get the hype on him.

Billy was his usual, average self.

I think the Panthers when they click.......are very hard to beat.

Their defence was suffocating last night. They certainly have the ability to attack when defending down patt.

I thought it was a pretty gutsy performance and although some guys could’ve been better I don’t think anyone deserves too much criticism.

The only real glaring flaw was Kev’s bench usage. Patty playing 80 minutes, Marty staying on way too long in his first stint, and not bringing Jensen on until the 70th minute despite the amount of defending required. I swear he must forget about some of the guys on the bench sometimes
Marty was poor and Jensen under-utilized. When I saw Rikki go off for Tapau late in the game I was gobsmacked.
I actually didn't mind the decision to play Carrigan for that length of time. I didn't think there were any obvious signs he had to come off and he seemed to find 2nd, 3rd and 4th winds. He was the captain and it seemed like he made it a point to lead the team tonight.

The Taupau one was disappointing. Should have come off for an HIA when he fumbled the ball. That was absolutely free and they paid the price for not taking it.
Pattie was incredible at at no stage looked bushed. His engine is immense.
