POST GAME [Round 12, 2023] Broncos vs Panthers

Also, Billy had a cracking game, he is so underrated it is ridiculous. He isn't an elite hooker but he is a very good one and his defense is extremely underrated. 46 tackles in the middle against that pack with only 2 misses and decent service plus some great niggle and a willingness to stand up for his teammates, what more do you want from a cheap player? Having a cheap, very serviceable 9 means we can spend money elsewhere. He is giving great bang for buck. The vitriol against him is ridiculous.
That's not it at all. The issue for those of us not lavishing praise on Billy, is not that he's not good for a "cheap player" it's that we think we deserve better than a "cheap player" in our spine, when we only have one wise old head in it and he's liable to go down lame at any minute.

We need more from dummy half than two "cheap players." We need one who can take over the reigns from Reynolds until Mam, Madden and Walsh are wiser, and someone on the bench who can threaten tired forwards in the way Soni Luke did to us. Or rather than "need" it's what we'd like ideally.

We can get by with Billy and Paix, but we're unlikely to beat the top 4 teams without Reynolds calling the shots. And even then it's 50:50.

Re: the double movement, that has been ruled as such for the past 10 years, and now all of a sudden the refs are giving the attacking side far more leeway when it comes to momentum and the whole thing with promoting the ball is suddenly far more liberal.

That is exactly what's wrong with the NRL. They're so fucking schizophrenic about the interpretation of rules and everyone is fucking sick of it.
Yep. Spot on!
I know I am

And Walsh outsmarted the rules by allowing Yeo to get in goal.

In what way was Yeo "in the action of scoring " ? He had 3 men wrapping up the ball .
Reece will get himself into trouble if he keeps questioning referees like he did last night . I thought only the Captain was allowed to question the Ref`s decision ?

I’ve seen a hundred tries scored that “shouldn’t have been scored” when the defensive players had the ball wrapped up. Where’s the line? The ref hasn’t called held and he’s over the try line, that’s enough of a try scoring opportunity needed.

And did Capewell talk to the ref once last night?

So do you think that if the Panthers lose Cleary, they are unlikely to beat other top four teams? At best 50:50 with him in? Let’s not forget, they’ve already lost to the Tigers this year…and us…and the Rabbits. Do you think swapping Kenny into our line up (he’s the starting hooker not Luke) will make a world of difference over Walters?

Last year we were in the top 4 until round 19. This year we were leading the comp until we ran into one of the worst refereeing performances of all time, even acknowledged by the NRL by dropping said officials and losing our captain for most of that game and this one and even so, we were still a couple of 50/50s away from winning both.

Plus we beat the defending premiers at their home. This doesn’t shout we can’t beat top 4 teams with Walters to me. How does it scream that to you?

So the ball is knocked on even though it went backwards and wasn't dropped but dislodged??

Yeah because it contacts a defender. They are penalised for not protecting their possession of the ball.

People can not like the rule, but that's the rule.

D

Doesn't alter the fact that plenty of times that has been called a double movement simply because the player lifted his arm. Last season Zac Hosking was robbed of his maiden try when he played for us when nearly his whole body slid over the line with momentum but they took it off him because he lifted his arm. Funny how when it happens to us its "oh but we changed the interpretation now..."

Hosking was short. His shoulders barely made to the line. If he doesn’t reach out the ball doesn’t make it to the line.

Tries like Turuva’s are rarely taken off them and just because some are, doesn’t mean this one was the wrong call.

And did Capewell talk to the ref once last night?

We didn't challenge anything either.

That's a big issue for US as well that needs to be addressed. This club is WAY too commited to being the good guys in a competition that has long since been consumed by dirty tactics and play. In order to be successful you must get into the gutter with the rest of them now. It fucking sucks I understand that, but it is what it is.

I'm not singling you out here, but just want to make a general observation about think line of thinking.

What I find funny is that the way Capewell is currently playing is the exact same way he played at the start of last season (before he was playing busted) ... which is the exact same way as he played at the Panthers.

And this version of Capewell is who nearly everyone on the forum was excited for us to have signed.
One thing I will say about Capewell, is he pulls the big plays out of his arse
regularly.

Did it a couple times last night.

Haven't formed an opinion on him either way yet, but would've expected to by now. You would hope we'll have rotated in some young forwards by the end of Origin season and have a better idea of our depth in that position.
Agree to date....with us.
he hasn't really been an issue ( I find that somewhat surprising)

Last night he was.

We've got young guys lining up in the lower grades and on the bench..... to get a run in first grade.

What are we doing fucking about with Marty Taupou in the 17......?

I'm feeling nauseous......hasn't this been discussed, a billion times?

Name someone Kev/Broncs should go after that's available, if you want a potential marquee dummy half.

I cant see any hookers on the market who would be a massive improvement over ours. We would have to get somebody who's contracted to another club.

Exactly......

That said......I like the look of Soni Luke.

Halfway through the season.......and **** all talk about Blake Mozer.
If he was the real deal
He should be demanding selection by now
?

1st Try Obstruction.
Luai received the ball on Sorensen's inside shoulder.

Luai runs behind and then passes.View attachment 22293
At that point it doesn't matter if anyone is actually impeded - it is an obstuction.

Kotoni No-try
What happens if Walsh catches it?

Hetherington knock-on
Inexplicable

Kevin's bench use
Questionable
If Reece runs into the decoy and falls over it becomes an obstruction, because he doesn't take a dive they don't call it...

NRL officiating is horrendous
