Roberts injury scare as Broncos mark Bennett's 800th with win over Eels

Brisbane's 18-10 victory over a gallant Parramatta in Wayne Bennett's 800th premiership game as coach has been overshadowed by an Achilles injury to centre James Roberts which has his NSW Blues selection in doubt.
Roberts, who scored a try early in the second half, sustained the injury after a dart down the right touchline and left the field in the 61st minute to ice the injury.
The 25-year-old flyer was right in the frame for Blues selection in the opening State of Origin clash in Melbourne on June 6 but with the NSW team to be selected on Monday his chances seem slim.
The Broncos were far from their best but once again the back-row of Jaydn Su'A, Tevita Pangai jnr and Joe Ofahengaue was enormous for the home side.
The Eels couldn't take a trick with Michael Jennings over the line once and all but across on another occasion only for desperate Broncos defence jolting the ball free.
With six minutes remaining a Corey Norman pass floated just forward to Bevan French who would have been over untouched. That summed up Parramatta's night.
The Broncos fourth win out of five games has them temporarily in the top eight for the first time in six weeks and with a bye next round Bennett will be pleased with their position on the ladder in the wake of a long injury list.
Brisbane winger Jamayne Isaako confirmed his status as the new Israel Folau when he leapt to take a Kodi Nikorima bomb and step his way to tryline with strength and power in the 10th minute.
With Michael Jennings in the sin bin the Broncos turned on a classic right to left sweeping move involving Nikorima, Anthony Milford and Darius Boyd.
The try to Corey Oates in the corner was a formality after one of the slickest backline pieces of play Brisbane has put on this year.
Ofahengaue showcased why he is in contention for a Queensland Maroons jersey with a try saving tackle on Michael Jennings which jolted the ball free as the Eels centre seemed certain to score.
Milford also showed desperation to save a try when Jennings was on his way to chasing a kick.
The Broncos took a 12-2 lead into the break.
Straight after half-time a rampaging Su'a found a flying Roberts. Soon after George Jennings raced 90m after intercepting a Milford pass and the game was well in the balance.
Both sides landed penalty goals after that but Brisbane hung on in the key moments when the luckless Eels threatened their line.

Honestly, the only thing this team is lacking is some direction in the halves.
I was well impressed with the forward pack tonight - TPJ and Ofa played 80 minutes a piece (both with solid performances), Su'a looks like he's been a first grade regular for years, and Lodge was mammoth for us at prop.
I think we take Corey Oates for granted a lot of the time - he really is an extra forward, and his motor is huge. Just keeps going.
What a performance from the lad, should be a lock for Origin if the selectors have any sense.
Also want to give a bit of credit to Staggs - came on at a pivotal moment of the game, when the Eels were really trying to get back into it, and had some very important involvements. The young fella looks like a real livewire. Hopefully he can get a few more games this season.

Nikorima was mostly terrible, but he had a good involvement with 2 of the tries. Nice vision to pass to Su'a (or was it just luck?) and the way he floated to the middle and helped create numbers outside on the left was decent too (well, the Eels did have 12 men I guess...maybe this one doesn't count).

I honestly thought he looked most dangerous to himself. Something about the way he always gets tackled when he does that, feels like some defender will fall and break his leg or arm.

Not always pretty but I'm OK overall. We struggled for fluency at times, were on the wrong side of the penalty count, yet we made our shots count when we had them.
More than anything, I was impressed with our composure. Aside from a few tense moments after their intercept we stuck in the groove and kept fighting. Plays weren't coming off so we kept it simple, ran hard and battered them out of the game.
Once we get Gillett and McG back our pack will be mean as hell. I wouldn't be opposed to pushing Gillett to lock and McGuire to prop. Back row of TPJ, S'ua and Gillo gives us a great balance of power and skill, plus Matt will tighten up that middle (equally so he could bodyguard Kodi, but S'ua is doing enough to justify his inclusion.
I'm not sure what we do with Bird tbh, but following would go great guns....

That's not true, because of the forwards velocity of the passer (and thus the ball when it leaves their hands). If the player is running 20 km / hr straight forwards and throws a completely flat pass, the ball is going to float forwards. Basically, as long as the backward velocity of the ball, relative to the passer, is less than 20km / hr, then it's going to float forwards.
