POST GAME Round 12 - Broncos vs Sharks

Haven’t seen it brought up, but if it has my apologies. Regarding the bench discussion, I went back and looked at the interchanges to see why Luke was put back on after his HIA with 15 to go. Not only did we concede 3 tries in that time (not saying it was a direct result of Luke being on), but we had only used 6 interchanges. Turpin coming back from injury I understand a bit of caution, but Turps being off the field is not good for us in general.

Couple that with the combined 30 minutes for Kennedy and Bullemor and it’s baffling how bad Seibold’s bench rotation is.

To argue the other side which BP kind of did, if he played either or both for longer minutes and they ended up costing us the game through errors or defensive lapses, then I can understand the restrictions, but you’ve got players there - use them ffs. Particularly with Lodge still out. The only way, especially this season, you’ll know if players can handle longer minutes is to give them longer minutes.

It’s not like it’ll risk losing a premiership or anything

Yeah it’s been discussed ad nauseam like all rubbish things this coach does.

I didn't see any discussion about having two interchanges left over. That's actually what prompted me to go back and see how Bennett would use his bench because it was the one area he fixed up when he came here. Sure enough, players like Sims and Ofahengaue were playing 30-50 minutes. Sometimes if a player was off his game like Lodge, Bennett wasn't afraid to give him an early spell and bring him back in fresh the next week.

That's what frustrates me about Kennedy and Te'o. Seibs went to the trouble of bringing these blokes over yet doesn't seem to have any faith in them. Maybe there's due cause, but you're telling me in those big moments a player like Te'o wouldn't be useful?

That's actually where Sammy Thaiday was good for the Broncos in his final year. There were a few games where the opposition were coming for the Broncos late and Thaiday would just put himself in the right position at the right time and shut the play down.

You're right though, I find myself shaking my head so much about this. Even if I try and look at Brisbane from a neutral perspective they make me embarrassed to be a Rugby League fan. Which hurts to say because there's players in this team busting their backsides week in, week out and they're getting held accountable.

One thing that bothered me in this game was deardon getting penalized for a high shot after the video replay and the shot on Luke that saw him go for a hia was a shoulder to the head and no penalty

That annoyed me as well, especially since Boyd copped one earlier as well. They've got to be considered a reportable offence in order for the video referee to intervene.

Of course Dearden wasn't cited by the MRC and Brisbane found themselves under all sorts of pressure to start the second half.

I had trouble understanding how Boyd getting smacked wasn't a penalty as it is every week (especially if it's the Broncos) Of course when one of our babies accidentally clipped a guy high it was...instaPenalty.

Must agree. I've got a few gripes about Fat Tony. Nothing new, no change from BennettBall (and really an inferior version of that) poor selections, Milford not given some bench time or dropped to send a message, extremely poor bench use, apparently rigidly adhering to clipboard timetable changes, poor commentary in after game pressers without calling a spade a spade and most of all, taking a genuine top 4 side to the wooden spoon because sure as shit the Dogs will win another game. I honestly believe an afl coach with a scant knowledge of rugby league would have done better.

Funny you mentioned ‘clipboard’ must have heard the same thing I have about his time at the Cutters.

All prep done by clipboard. 30 mins of D? Tick. 30 mins of attack? Tick.

Okay boys, we’re good to go...

I don't know if I heard about a clipboard, might have. It just seemed like his approach to training and game day was according to stats, timetables and new age rituals. You know 'the scientific approach'. Well, yes science is vital and ever evolving and has a place in rugby league but it's a simple game and before the new age touch is applied I believe the old school teachings must be respected. I nearly threw up when I heard about 'booming beats' at training and I feared the worst but reserved judgement. It seemed a rejection of the tried, true and tested. I want my fantasy, when I become coach !!

Yup. Forget about the new age beats and bring back the sandpit...

I don't think Wolfie is as much a fan of Tolman, as much as he doesn't rate some of our forwards and would bring a player like him in. 68 minutes, 20 runs, 45 tackles, yeah, the Broncos could have used some of that the other night.

Tale of the tape

Broncos Bench
Issac Luke - 20 minutes
Rhys Kennedy - 21 minutes
Ethan Bullemor - 10 minutes
Ben Te'o - 21 minutes

Cronulla Sharks Bench
Connor Tracey - 20 minutes
Toby Rudolf - 41 minutes
Royce Hunt - 39 minutes
Teig Wilton - 28 minutes

No wonder the Broncos ran out of puff.
I do not understand the bench use, Broncs seem to employ their bench players a lot less than you might expect.. Why? I haven't seen any commentators mention this (besides on this forum). Also the rotation at fixed times for certain players.. why is this?

because of incompetence would be my guess.

If Mulitalo’s shirt doesn’t rip, Flegler pulls off a rare front rower try saver that is remembered for years to come.
Yeah, that was an awesome effort to run him down, I was so disappointed for him that this happened. Also makes you wonder what the design standards on jerseys are these days if they rip off chunks that easily, he was hardly giving him the Gordo drag over the sideline effort. Seemed to get a hand on him and it tore.

Pretty smart if you think about. Easily torn jerseys.
