PRE-GAME Round 13 - Roosters vs Broncos

The independent doctor ruled him out, so if he had stayed on the field in an NRL game the club would have likely faced penalties.

The games stance on concussion is to be commended IMO

I agree .

NFL in USA had a huge pay out over head injuries .
The agreement provides up to $5 million per retired player for serious medical conditions associated with repeated head trauma.
While the lawsuit was a combination of hundreds of actions brought by more than 5,000 ex-NFL players, the settlement applies to all players who retired on or before July 7, 2014, according to Judge Anita Brody's 132-page decision.

5000 ex NFL Players x 5 Million per case .

Concussion is much better understood today . It can lead to mental illness in middle age .
Saying it was not like that in my day is ignorant of the facts we know today .

**** that we need the win...

Moose will play because he's a machine and loves it

Can we break in someone else to play 13? McGuire has always been a prop, looked like a prop and thinks like one. Can't see the logic in keeping him there.

In the interests of full disclosure I am a big Arrow fan but seriously anyone but Moose.

Speaking of OCD, it's pretty poor that our official website can't even spell our own players names correctly.

"Jayden Su'A"
"Tevita Pangai"

Can't wait to watch TPJ's old man run out on the field.

[emoji23] man. I don't know how many times this forum has been through this.

Sure, but that's like saying, Gillette has to continue to earn his spot or Sua will replace him. Why are we even talking about it, it's not going to happen....imo.

Not trying to pick a fight here, I rate Niko and think he did great backing up when Hunt got injured. I also wouldn't have any issues if he was Halfback next year. I just find it odd that people think Hunt is under any pressure to keep his spot.

If Sua was coming into the team and making try assists and scoring tries whilst generally making a very good job of his position overall , while Gillete was out injured for 6 weeks it might be a different story .

I rate Kodi higher than Ben Hunt from what I`ve seen .

Marshall will again slot in at five-eighth.
But the Broncos received another blow when utility Kodi Nikorima was ruled out with a shoulder problem suffered against the Warriors last week.

Problem solved for the time being .

The point being is that 6 weeks later, regardless of how well he played, Sua would be back on the bench or out of the squad when Gillette returned from injury. I highly doubt there would be calls for Gillette to earn his spot. His track records speaks for itself, as does Hunt's.

Not good for Kodi, same shoulder as last season?
He has two bung shoulders but the one that is troubling him currently is the one that was operated on a few months back. Most likely 2-4 weeks.

I don't think their track records are in the same ball park, or even galaxy for that matter.

You're talking about the best backrower in the comp being shoved aside for a 20 y/old, even as talented as Su'a is. If Su'a performed at Gillett's level, he would be replacing someone else in the team, not Matt.

How is that remotely comparable to the Hunt / Kodi situation?

Hunt has played for Aus, taken us to a GF and semi's whilst Kodi has been a bench sub and filled in (admirably) for the past 6 weeks. I think you can quite easily make the comparison that the regular deserves his spot back when he returns from injury.

So that momentum we built through that winning streak is pretty much a distant memory at this point.

I think we've definitely lost some momentum, but we lost it in the forwards last week and we have all of them back. Macca and Pangai Jnr will be fresh and I'm hoping the origin guys will be out to prove a point and show that they deserve their spot for Game 2......if it's a fast game fatigue could play a huge part though.

I think we have a better than even shot at winning this even without Milf and Kodi. Fingers crossed.

And you felt the need to quote my post to make that argument for the umpteenth time

I'd like to see someone other than moose play 13, but if that were to to happen theyd have to prove themselves a regular first grade player with the capability to step into the role. The teams game is now based on 80 minutes from the lock or a fair bit of it. I don't think any of the potential replacements (with the exception of gillet and he's not going anywhere) have shown enough consistency or stamina for the role this year. Next year, who knows? Bird? Arrow? Tpj? Maguire or a combination of others? Anything is possible. This year is Maguire's chance to show he belongs there.

I love the bloke, but McGuire hasn't been as good as I'd hoped this season. There's no disputing his work and contributions to the team but I thought moving to lock would free him up a bit along with his ability to play big minutes. He's always looked to ball-play a bit and even kick when playing prop, but I just haven't seen anything like that so far. It's just been a 3rd or 4th tackle hit up. I hope he starts showing something different, otherwise he's back to prop next year (assuming any team changes/departures)

Broncos' Maroons stars demand to play

Brisbane Broncos coach Wayne Bennett has been overruled by his senior players this week, with his Queensland Maroons contingent choosing to play against the Sydney Roosters on Saturday night, despite being told otherwise. MATCH PREVIEW TIPPING
‌Bennett had planned to rest at least two of his State of Origin representatives after Queensland's 28-4 loss on Wednesday night, with forwards Sam Thaiday, Matt Gillett and Josh McGuire the favourites to have a spell.
But when approached this morning to be told of the news, Bennett's players answered back, refusing to take a week off and demanding to be on the plane to Sydney.
It means only Anthony Milford will miss this week's match as he recovers from concussion, with the Broncos set to field a near full strength side to try and get their second win over the Roosters this season.
The only other hiccup for Brisbane this week is the absence of Kodi Nikorima who will take a week off after suffering a minor shoulder injury in the Broncos' 28-10 loss to the New Zealand Warriors in Round 12.
Speaking to media on Friday, Bennett said he had no choice but to let his players play after they told him their wishes.
"Anthony is out and Benji [Marshall] is in. Kodi Nikorima is not quite right. He hurt his shoulder against the Warriors so he will only be a week. Jaydn Su'A will come onto the bench for him," Bennett said of his team's changes.
"I was very tempted to rest some of our forwards but I just couldn't convince them that they should miss the game.
"They were adamant they wanted to play which was really good. That made it difficult for me so I granted their wish.
"They won't be having a spell this week. They are fine.
"They might be a bit tired. I wanted to rest one or two this week but they wouldn't let me. They are great warriors and if I were in the same boat I'd want to play.
"I told a couple this morning that they weren’t playing but they didn't want to listen to that."
It is a welcome change for the Broncos to have most players available during the Origin period, but Bennett was quick to cut down suggestions this may become a regular occurrence, saying his Queensland players will need a week off at some point.
"They know what they are doing and they understand that they'll have to have a break at some point," he said.
"It obviously comes with the disappointment of Wednesday night and they just want to come back out and play football again."
Having to back up just three days after an Origin opener is a big ask and a unique part of the NRL.
While American sports such as basketball and baseball are played almost every day, these sports do not possess the same physicality as an 80-minute match of Origin football.
It is a fact echoed by Bennett who admitted he is still worried about the welfare of his players even though he has decided to let them play.
"It takes a toll. If it's not this week then it will be next week. They get worn down and fatigued. That's what happens," he said.
"The more they have to back up the more danger they have of having a six-eight week stage of poor performances because they haven't recovered properly from anything.
"There is no competition in the world that is elite like Origin and then has athletes going back two days later and playing again. There is usually a much greater period before they go out and play again."

I wonder what difference it would make if the Broncos moved Adam Blair to 13? I didn't have an issue with McGuire at lock because it meant that the Broncos were going to call in a genuine prop forward like Ese'ese to start which I thought had been sorely missed.

There is no doubt Blair is a more skillful player and I just wonder if you give Blair the ball later in the set whether it would result in more creativity around the ruck.

There's been a few occasions where Blair has had the ball later in a set, and the Broncos tend to play very well off the back of his plays.
