QUEENSLAND have suffered a devastating blow with star utility back Darius Boyd ruled out of the Origin decider with a broken thumb.
The Courier-Mail can reveal Boyd will miss up to six weeks after scans confirmed he suffered a fracture in his right hand during Queensland’s epic 18-16 victory in Origin II.
Boyd will undergo surgery in the coming days.
The development also has implications for the Broncos, who have already lost Anthony Milford for six weeks with a shoulder injury and will be without Boyd for Saturday night’s clash against the Raiders in Canberra.
It is a major setback for the Maroons, who are sweating on the fitness of Boyd’s backline cohort Johnathan Thurston for the Origin decider on July 12 after he suffered a fresh shoulder injury in Queensland’s series-levelling win.
The results of Thurston’s scans will be known on Friday, but the one certainty is that Boyd will be missing from the Queensland side for Origin III.
Boyd played his 28th consecutive Origin game on Wednesday and was the player most likely to break Thurston’s record of 36 straight matches, but the North Queensland ace’s remarkable streak is now safe.
While Thurston was brave in Origin II, Boyd was equally courageous.
It is believed the Broncos skipper, playing centre for the first time in eight years, suffered the injury sometime during the first half, meaning he played at least 40 minutes with a broken thumb.
Without Boyd, Queensland coach Kevin Walters faces a major selection conundrum at centre.
Walters could recall Justin O’Neill, dropped after Origin I, and return Will Chambers to left centre for the decider.
A left-field option could be blooding another young gun in Melbourne’s utility sensation Cameron Munster, who was 18th man for Origin II and is capable of playing fullback, centre, five-eighth and lock.
The Broncos will finalise their starting side at the captain’s run at Red Hill on Friday.
Broncos coach Wayne Bennett has yet to decide on a replacement for Boyd but could shift Jordan Kahu to fullback with David Mead, who was outstanding for Wynnum Manly last Sunday in the Intrust Super Cup, a wing possibility.
Another option is for Benji Marshall to move to the backfield, which would enable Bennett to promote Ben Hunt off the bench to return to the halves with Kodi Nikorima.

**** sake can we just get a little luck

I blame Origin for Milford too, so it's taken arguably our 2 best players this year.
Oh yeah, I know. It was implied. Believe me, I fucking know.

Its just one of those seasons unfortunately. We have some good replacements, but gutting our leadership group is going to be hard. Its a bit unfair for a bloke who just made the side, but I fear marshal will have to shoulder the bulk of it. I can't think knik or kahu are capable and macca has hands full with increased responsibility already. Thaiday or macca may wear the "C" but someone essentially will need to be a leader for the backs, in the game.

Would like Isaako to play fb hes been playing fairly well and can cover goal kcikimg

Just chuck in the next generation

Would love to see Isaako or Allen get a run at fullback. But Wayne will play it safe and put Kahu there. We need as much experience as we can. Probably not a good time to blood roomies.

Jesse Bromwich broke his thumb in round 1. Then came back play round 3 Broncos. So Boyd gone miss 6 weeks according to report?

Not sure why we're even discussing Allan / Isaako, they aren't in the 23 man squad. It'll be Kahu at Fullback with Mead or Pearson on the right wing.

Sick of the origin injuries too. Clubs should be compensated for lost players for duration of injury as assessed by independent specialist and also resting players the game after. 80% their wage off the salary cap (not 100% so less likely to game it) and 80% player wages paid by NRL. If season ending allow later transfer. Won't fix the problem but at least give clubs a chance to work around the problem.

Sooo who becomes the main playmaker out of benji and kodi? Hunt was always the organiser then Milford stepped up as the main guy so does Kodi take over the reins now?

Have people seriously forgotten how good Kahu was at fullback during Boyd's achilles injury?
They are judging him by his last start in that position. RL fans can be a reactionary lot. He is a hell of a good option when your main guy is missing.

Bromwich dislocated his thumb, Boyd has a broken bone.

Important game this, I really want to us to dig deep and win this one.

Roosters will be a big chance to grab the points from the Storm and if the Sharks beat Manly a win for us will close the gap to the top as well as outright 4th.

Once again Origin has successfully fucked our club
Yes cos origin only affects us. Fmd we can whinge. Other clubs just get on and deal with..that's what we need as a club. I really feel we lack resilience as a club and supporters. Lets just hs4den the **** up..bring in the next player dying for a shot to be part of the greatest nrl club and get on with winning the next game.
