[Round 18, 2021] Broncos vs Tigers

Coates has chosen to not be a Bronco next year. We are in a process of rebuilding (apparently) and should therefore choose for him to not be a part of our plans this year. On your bike Xavier - you are no longer one of us.
Yeah I'm not up for giving a Melbourne Storm recruit NRL experience.

I don't care if it's downgrade in 2021. We're basically paying off Lodge this year anyway as a write off.

I don’t trust the team list and think Kev will shuffle last minute as always so I’ll hold off being to harsh but surely if Isaako didn’t do enough to retain his spot, Cobbo should be next cab off the rank.

I find it interesting many here are Bullemor fan boys, I know he's scored a couple of tries but if you were to judge him based on what happens between the two 20 metre lines, is he really any better than anyone else named ahead of him?

I wouldn't think so
He's been better, yes
agreed ...

I can only really think of 3 coaches in the league that could get away with dropping a current Origin rep, and Kev is not one of them ... yet 😉

Yes I said earlier it looked to me like a media gee up. Surely a team running 15 out of 16 needs all the motivation, confidence and moral boosting only a win provides. To have that winning combination then not retained is pure madness.

Does Kevvie have an issue with Bullemor?

He’s been one of our better forwards this season when he’s played but for some reason only gets in the 17 if there’s injuries or suspensions.

The only thing we really lose with Isaako is goal kicking.

Our right side defence wasn't really much better with him there. At least with Coates, we have a bit more strike on that side now.

I just hope whoever takes over the goal-kicking has been practicing.

At this stage you have to think retaining Coates has more to it. I wonder if it's a team harmony move - if he's well-liked within the group, it may cause resentment if he is dropped, and that's something Kevvie really doesn't need right now.

Plus there's not a whole lot of difference between him and any possible replacements, and he does still bring a bit of x-factor on his day.

I tend to disagree. the only X factor he has at present is in his name. He's playing rank ordinary for us. He may well come good at the Storm when is body matures enough, but for now he's a flight risk on that wing.

I think the try saver from a few games ago at least shows Coates has some desire to play well for the Broncos. If Kevvie sees him as the best option on the wing then he should stick with it. We've had enough chop and change.

A rookie winger who has abandoned ship, doesn’t make any metres and lets in multiple tries. Yeah can’t drop him because the cliques will be upset... if true then this team has big problems

In a lot of ways Kevvie is still finding his feet in this position, and I think even a little thing like this may win him some points with the squad. I'm not talking cliques, but overall team harmony.

I think there's a vision for an overhaul of the team culture, but we can't just sack everyone and some of the players who may be pushing the needle towards the negative side of the scale will inevitably be here next year. If a move like this keeps the peace for the remainder of this season, it's a foundation to build on going into next year, with new pieces like Reynolds and Capewell helping to build an improved culture.

In the end, though, of course, I don't really know, and like most people on here I'm just speculating.

I get the harmony thing but players should be picked on form. Take the fact that Coates is leaving out of the equation and what you have is a very green player who is badly out of form and low on energy. I can’t see Bellamy picking him every week if he’s struggling the way he is now.

I like your train of thought. My speculation holds as to Coates remaining in the team due to Origin selection. As pointed out earlier, It's very hard for Kevvie (as a rookie coach) to say that the QLD selection panel are incorrect in their assessment AND that achieving such a milestone (Origin selection) can be met with relegation from the squad.

How could that possibly be received by other young players in the squad? Picked for Origin but not good enough for Kevvie? What does he know?

It's a shame, because Coates really does need to drop down to QCup for a bit, but his QLD selection forces Kevvie's hand to a large extent. Furthermore, we have Kevvie being directly measured up against Bellamy, who has apparently seen something in Coates.

See Renegade’s post earlier. There is no way you come back from a long-term injury without aggravating muscles that haven’t performed at 100% for so long.

Have you ever had a serious injury?
Again look at Parramatta and Gutho, took him on after his 2nd ACL, he then had another, but since the rehab he hasn't really looked back in relation to knee issues. Someone once said to me about Australian fast bowlers and injury that they were training incorrectly for the discipline, to much upper body work and not enough leg days, maybe our guys are training poorly as there seems to be no other team in the comp atm who have as many cramps and leg injuries as us.

Maybe there's something behind the fact Coates is still being picked, everyone else that has signed elsewhere or not in next years plans has been moved on or dropped.

Seriously what the **** does Bullemor have to do to play, shit selection from leaving him out from Kev
Pass a fitness test, for starters. The fact that he's in the reserves should tell you there's likely to be a shuffle of the bench if he's fit. Otherwise, it's fairly understandable that Kevvie's named our two QLD Origin reps, whether you rate them or not.

I'm more concerned that Staggs might pull out. I have zero faith in Farnworth to link up with any winger whether it's Coates, Oates or Isaako. He's not shown any sign of it this season. Something that should've become immediately obvious when Staggs returned and played like an actual centre. Nothing against Herbie's work ethic, but the fucker needs to quit hogging the ball and trying to do it all on his own.
