POST GAME [Round 18, 2023] Broncos vs Dolphins

Our right edge defence was completely shot, Staggs didn’t know what to do, rush out or retreat back, we’re lucky they didn’t score more down there.

Patty has gotta go back to middle, completely wasted on an edge and our go forward really struggled without that 1-2 punch with Haas.

Billy was pretty poor and took some silly options. He is playing too many minutes and they aren’t quality.

Reyno’s short kicking game has completely disappeared, it’s hard to understand what’s happened to him.

Our attack looks soo much better when we stand deeper and give Herbie or Staggs some space to work with, at the very least get the forwards just running hard and straight & earning quick PTB instead of soft runs hitting & spinning for offloads.

Haas running wider late & earning a few quick PTB got us back in the game & saved our arse.

Touchy missing 3 players go out right in front of him was absolutely bizarre and probably got phins back in the game.

How good was the “Masked Wolf”?

That boi has some skillz!!!

On reflection I'm going to walk back my criticism of Smoothy, just a little.

Kev subbed him on right when we were under the pump. Believe he did that the other game as well. I know every player should be ready at this level but the guys new to first grade. There might be no right time in the game but the last 30mins when we were struggling probably wasn't the best time.

I feel like he should come on 25 - 30 mins in and plays 25-30mins and Walters comes back on with 25mins left. Starting and finishing with the stronger hooker.

It wasn’t doomsday. In my books it was a better performance than Titans and Knights before that in my opinion. 4 important players out, middle of origin, Carrigan playing in an in-effective position and Derby game so 5 tries to 3 when the opposition played fairly decently I’m not all to concerned.

I really think the main issue in that game was Tyson Smoothy, he came up with some horrific errors in quick succession and we spent the first 25 minutes of the second half with limited ball and no field position. We still have heaps of improvement which is great but you know we are getting to a stage in the season where it could be all too late.

I think only Carrigan and Haas will play game 3 (Cobbo deserves it but Slater does like to stick) so origin shouldn’t effect us to much more. I don’t think we played as if we were too good to put in effort and when it came time to get back in the game they made sure they kept possession and work through them. Still need a full 80 but it’s a good start after the shit we chucked up last week.

Get the feeling the scars of last season's fade out is playing on the players minds a bit.

We really should have put 30 on them at the very least. The amount of good ball we had in the first half and to only come away with 3 tries. We should have done better.

I just don't see that ruthlessness that you need to go far in this comp. We had it earlier in the season, but it just doesn't seem to be there anymore and it's worrying sign. As soon as Dolphins put us under the pump, we were crumbling.

But still good to get the 2 points.

Brisbane were stupid not to just expose Tesi every set. Understandable that Herbie was also having success in his match-ups, but 3rd tackle draw and pass to put Cobbo down the sideline past Niu should have been the play after the first try where he ran around him so easily. He could have bowled Nikorima, and if it's not points, it's an opportunity to swing it to Herbie. Dolphins will get murdered with that lineup against good teams.

Ref seemed alright early tonight, but we won a few challenges there, and it's always such a close game... Hope we can do better in the coming weeks, but new combinations, players out of position and a bit of a grudge from Redcliffe all played a role in that result. Cobbo is a gem. Wish he turned up like that every week. He's an emotional player, would like to hear he was working closely with Hodges, because he might mature the kid a bit.

What was the story with Jesse Arthars?

Did the interchange official rule that with 3 to go, a 15 minute head assessment didn't fulfil the criteria of a match ending injury?

I thought that could have been disaster for the Broncos. Had Selwyn not scored, they had an easy target down that left with Piakura and Willison protecting Ezra.

I think it happened last week with somebody else as well in a similar situation. They probably are pedantic enough to say its got to be 15 mins to see if the player gets ruled out regardless.

It's the norm around here.

We win and people are upset we didn't win by 30.
We had just seen the Cows put 74 points on the tigers. After Dolphins went down by nearly 60 the week before, it was probably a good chance to flex, but we did have mitigating factors that should have tempered those expectations somewhat. Hard to gauge just how well the Dolphins played and how poorly we played. I think with the outs we have it was about the right outcome, but could/should expect a little more from our reserves if we want to be a smokey for the GF. Our system isn't there quite yet.
