POST GAME Round 20 - Broncos vs Storm

What you mean the fact that the club has assembled one of the best young forward packs in the comp , and had 4 of the best young halves and some great young backs isn't a great job.
They said they are going with youth , we where never going to be competitive this year. We win some easy games and then get belted by the best team in the comp , and the dummies and toys get thrown out of the cot ....
Pretty much spot on with this comment. We have gone with a youth policy banking again on what we have developed, we either have to be patient for those players to season a bit more, or we buy in some added experience, particularly in key positions to help guide them (if you want quicker results).

Thirdly, the coach has to pull his finger out about sorting out whatever offensive and defensive systems we operate under and bed them down so it becomes second nature to the playing group. Unless he can do this and get this done in the short term, he may be looking at a shorter term contract than what he expected.

Also our starting forwards made around 140 and 150m which is still a top effort. Our bench was basically useless Offa topping the run metres at around 60. Missed tackles across the board were a problem but also a result of being on the back foot for the entire first half and defending against Melbourne for 70% of the time. Haha Siebold here's your stats bro. So it actually wasn't the broncos fault. It was Melbourne's for hogging the ball.
What are our strengths? Our forwards. What did we do with them? Make them into tackling machines. How the hell does anyone think that plays to our strengths?
What we needed to do was dominate the field position using offloads in their half to draw defenders then play for the outside backs. With our bigger forwards we could have used wider passing in the rucks to gain territory and a decent kicking game to trap them. At brief moments in the game we managed to do it but god our kicking sucks. At least it does for anything but milfords bomb.
We need to work on our kicking, or find someone who can because we will never beat the storm playing like we did tonight.

You can think what you like, it's why I haven't invested in this season. I rarely watch games because I get worked up. But you can think what you want.
Fair enough, can you expand though?
Was this said in the media, behind closed doors, context?
I'd be a bit disappointed if the boss said in the media, "We don't do rebuilding years at the Broncos" if he knew that that's exactly what we're doing.

I remember hearing someone say it however I don't think they work in an official capacity with the club. Probably just on one of the panel shows something along the lines of 'they dont do rebuilds, they always expect to be in the top 4 etc'.

Some really good points by everyone but I don't think we've gotten to the core of it. There's no other team in the NRL that we consistently lose to and we beat the roosters already this season. Everytime we get flogged by the storm I see the same reaction about how far below the benchmark we are but it's just not really the case. We are not that far behind the rest of the top 8 but for some reason we cannot beat the storm. People talk about last year's dismal loss to the dragons in sept, but remember the year before when storm belted us 30-0 in the prelims or 46-12 earlier that year. And every other year even when we were beating roosters, sharks, cowboys and other teams that were doing well. They just absolutely have our measure.

For some reason the broncos are just shit scared of the storm. No other team goes weak at the knees like we do against the storm. Kicking it out on the full with the first kick off is symbolic of the fear they put through this club. It’s pretty sad in a professional sport that boasts toughness. It’ll keep happening until someone says enough is enough and won’t bend the knee to those pricks.

TPJ showed them no respect last year. We still got smashed, but it was great to see him just shove Slater onto his ass lol.

Right now we are just lacking a mental toughness ... which is something that Seibs needs to address, unfortunately, it isn't an overnight fix.

we were hanging with the Storm for the first 30 mins or so ... then that 10 minute period before half time happened (consisting of numerous BS refereeing decisions) and we weren't able to recover.

The BS ref decisions included:
  1. The forward pass call against Turpin that was easily backwards
  2. the scrum penalty against Lodge, IMO, there is no way the Sutton saw anything in the scrum, but took Finnucanes word for it. if he had seen it, he would have penalised Lodge immediately.
  3. the failure to sin bin Finnucane for swing a punch, during the Lodge scrum incident. throwing a punch is supposed to be a mandatory sin bin
  4. a clear as day knock on from the storm in the lead up to a try
  5. numerous Storm forward passes

Darius just isn't up for it anymore and in my opinion has never been captain material. I know we hear that the players respect Darius and think he is great, but that could be poor judgement on their behalf.

It is Seibold who chooses the captain however, so the blame rests with him (or the board, if the rumours that his hands have been tied when it comes to Darius are true). It is just tough to watch when your captain is the laughing stock of the NRL.

I think I’m ok with getting smashed on the scoreboard if the team shows some fight and mongrel. But to just bend over and take it on your home ground is unacceptable

what did we learn here;

1. You cannot turn up to a NRL game with a passenger; seriously we play with 12 every time we run onto the turf. If you felt as coach that your team is best served by moving your 5/8th to fullback then thats your prerogative....instead the real problem has simply been moved onto another square of the chessboard....I hate myself for this; we NEED to miss the finals so the club has the leverage to **** some of these uselesss ***** off...

2. We have some senior players here....where were they last night? Does anyone seriously believe we'd make a game of this if only Gillett was available? Paul White as CEO needs to make the tough decisions....thats why you're on the big money Paul...even if it means yet another year in the wilderness nexts season.....find a way to move on from Boyd, Macca, Gillet & Glenn.....I accept it ***** our salary cap but give the coach a fighting chance to not have to consider how to fit pieces that aren't helping and are actually worse than the so-called guys how are a tier below them...

3. Siebs was always gunna have some tough decisions to make in year 1. The easiest of the lot was to decide who out of the young forwards would start, who would back them up from the bench and how are the minutes distributed. I reckon he is getting close to nailing that now. Did he know before he came on board that the club was over the salary cap? Regardless, as players had to be moved on, and we can debate all day if the right ones were let go but the facts remain. I don't put this on the coach.

4. Looking at what Canberra have recruited from English Super league; why aren't we investigating the same comp for the players we need? Is there a first grade standard half/5/8th playing there who would like a crack at NRL? Is there a Kevin campion style player who accepts no shortcuts from anyone and holds everyone accountable to the same standards? If so bring them in FFS...

5. We need to look facts in the face; while ever we have the useless shit on our roster (you all know who they are) this so called rebuild job is at best 50% done. And right now thats the best its gunna be....and this could go on like this for the next 5 years of Siebs contract. Tough unpopular and painful decisions need to be made now. Standards are not being met and they cannot if we believe we can play NRL games carrying people who contribute very little. As previously stated, the painful bit will be the damage to our salary cap going forward, and yet no-one can complain we didnt bring all this upon ourselves...

Over to you Brisbane Broncos...

What Hughes did to Boyd to score his try is what I picture Milford doing from fullback but instead he’s playing first receiver and passing it onto turpin and Boyd. It seems crazy

Yeah watching the replay shows are defensive line retreating , which is so dumb. Gives the opposition time and momentum, you just can't do that especially against the storm. And Smith played haas easily in the middle for the welch try , but that's the issue with youth. Hopefully we can move forward and continue to grow, they were always going to be tough especially getting beat by manly last week.

No it was on hear by roger wilco, he has the inside info. People seem to not take much notice but everything is spot on . They are banking on our youth and they obviously expect it to take time. This is the reason I think Bellamy didn't want the job, I expect him to retire after his contract and he wouldn't want to wait for our window.

Phil Gould slams Anthony Seibold over Storm’s rout of Broncos

Phil Gould was critical of Broncos coach Anthony Seibold shifting the blame for his side’s loss to the Storm.
Phil Gould was critical of Broncos coach Anthony Seibold shifting the blame for his side’s loss to the Storm.
Phil Gould has slammed the Broncos after their demoralising loss to the Storm and has questioned coach Anthony Seibold’s reaction to the horror loss.

The Broncos suffered a humiliating 40-4 loss last night at Suncorp Stadium and Gould believes Seibold’s approach to the loss is not helping his side’s bid to play finals football.

“They haven’t won a title since 2006, and it doesn’t look like they’re going to be playing finals footy this year either, let alone win the competition,” Gould told Maquarie Sports Radio.

“It just seems like an extraordinary drought for a club that has had such an advantage over other clubs in terms of recruitment and retention.

“I really thought this was a nice, up and coming roster and I believe they have their best footy in front of them, but last night was a fairly meek demise at the end of the game.”

Gould also took aim at some questionable comments from coach Anthony Seibold that he believes are contributing to the mental state of his players.

“As I said to the guys they (Storm) are the benchmark, they are the best in the competition,” Seibold said.

“We got lapped by them by 36 points so that’s how far we’ve got to go. We are not the first Broncos team to get beat by 40 points by the Storm.

“So it is someone else’s fault,” Gould said.

“What’s his job there? His job is to change the culture and the mindset and mentality of this team and if that is the way he is feeling. Well we are not the only Broncos team that have been flogged it is in the organisation.

“What is that saying about what he has been able to achieve over the last nine months in charge of the team?

“His job is to change the mentality and culture of that team and he is not doing that,” Gould said.

“When your coach talks like that after a loss, I wonder if that mentality is seeping into the players and that last forty minutes just wasn’t good enough for a team that was hoping to leapfrog into the top eight.”

Couldn't of said it better myself.
What I saw last night at the game was a bunch of largely inexperienced kids up against a big and fast well drilled Rugby League team fine tuning for a grand final appearance.

Make no mistake, this is directly the result of a decade of incompetence by our recruitment and retention department nothing more. We either sit back and wait till experience is gained or go to the market and buy some.

Preferably sourced by our 'new' recruitment and retention department.

He just had to throw in that line about us supposedly getting more advantages than every other team recruitmentwise. **** thinks it's still 1995 or something.

Yeah, he should really take a look in the mirror.
