Round 20 - Cowboys vs. Broncos - Pre Match Discussion

One thing i will not blame Hook for is support play. The players at this level should be doing it anyway, it should come naturally

I agree about "the footballing brain" in that support play ought to come naturally.

Problem is, it all too often doesn't for the Broncos for whatever reason, and THAT for mine is a coaching issue - to make it happen. Consistently.

For mine, the 2 essential mantras of a successful football team in any code is:

(a) the ball carrier is always looking to offload/pass;

(b) support the ball carrier always

The alternative is 4 one-outs > bomb = don't score enough points to win. Sounds pretty familiar to me when I look at the ladder.

The passing interchanges amongst the forwards: McGuire and Hannant can be turned into such a weapon if only ....

Hoffman was marked up on Bukuya who ended up turning back in. While he is responsible, we can't forget about his inside man who's job it was to mark up on Carney and he just didn't go with him.

Show and tell me I'm wrong please.

We had Hoffman and Kahu, they had Carney and his winger. It was 2 on 2.

If you say so - I'm going from the memory of the original broadcast, so if you've watched it a few times I'll have to bow to your knowledge. I assumed there was a centre between Carney and the winger. But as Pete says, Carney was the inside man's responsibility, and I don't blame Hoffman for that miss or a misread that most centres in the comp would make. Your mileage obviously varies.

For mine, in general, our one-on-one defence is not good: poor reads and missed tackles kill us, and **** completion rates

Agreed. Consistency in defense in general has been a problem for a long time - one great defensive set is followed too often by a frustrating lapse in attention or effort.

Then I must be misunderstanding and/or misreading defence, and I am glad to stand corrected.

The way I saw it was very simple.

Kahu was marking his winger. One on one. Hoffman must have seen that. There was no one in front of Hoffman, just empty space.

Carney runs towards Hoffman pretty much. My instinct wouls have been to go for Carney. The alternative is to mark empty space. Carney was Hoffman's mark for mine, and Bukuya and/or whoever was the responsibility of whoever.

The important thing for me is that Carney is enemy no. 1 'cos he has the ball. He must be Hoffman's immediate target, or is it ok for him to stand there and say he wasn't my man and blame Dodds who was already beaten?

Carney spotted Dodds and saw an opportunity. He beat Dodds with speed and Hoffman should have taken him but didn't. Probably because of being new to centre.
really it is not worth arguing over, it was probably a 50/50 call and Carney made the break.

It's now the end of Round 18 and we've actually moved one position up the ladder thanks to Manly handing NQ a 20 point defeat, woohoo!!! I guess we have to take any victories we can get at this stage, that's how ridiculous things are at the moment.

Kind of off topic but I was watching tonight's match and Jamie Lyon spent most of the match filling in as halfback and in 80 minutes or less he managed to show up both of our full-time half's, very depressing to watch TBH.

Thanks. Just trying to get my head around it

Long time reader, first time poster.

I get the feeling after the post match conference Hook isn't going to make any major changes for this game apart from our Origin lads coming back. If everyone is fit I'm expecting to see next Tuesday:

1. Norman
2. Maranta
3. Hoffman
4. Hodges
5. Kahu
6. Prince
7. Wallace
8. Hannant
9. McCullough
10. Thaiday
11. Glenn
12. Gillet
13. Parker

14. Hunt
15. McGuire
16. Hala
17. Oates

You have to imagine that this will be the last chance for a number of our players to fire, most notably our spine. Norman looks disinterested, our halves lack creativity in the opposition 20 and Macca doesn't seem to get out of first gear most games. Personally I'd prefer we start with McGuire and move Gillet back to the bench but Hook seems to have gone off that idea this season.

Welcome to the forums.

I can possibly see Norman being named but I can't see Maranta keeping his spot. Oates will play centre, Hoffman to wing, Kahu on the other wing.

Surely Hala cannot be in the 17. He was suppose to be a impact player however his runs are slow, defence not threatening and basically not up to the hype surrounding him at the start of the year

Where's Maranta & Prince? :crying:

Hala hasn't been as good this year, no doubt. I think his injuries have made him a bit timid.

Agreed Coxy.

Originally he started off well but as his enthusiasm waned so did his form. Fitness has always been a key issue with him and since we have Tasi on board the best thing Griffin could do for Dave is have him spend sometime with the Dolphins. That way he can spend more time on the field and get more match fitness.

I really see potential in him. He had a shocker on Friday, coming up with two bad mistakes where he was possessed with the spirit of Dave Taylor but the guy certainly has power and on occasion even some skill.

Reasons why I'm not looking forward to this game
by ningnangnong

1. We suck, like really, really suck and are probably going to get slaughtered

2. The game is on delay here, so not on the telly until 21:30

3. I will force myself to watch it and probably not enjoy any of it

4. Peter Wallace

Good effort, but disappointing. The fact that you claimed authority over it, and centred the text, made me think it was a poem. But nothing rhymed. If it doesn't rhyme, it's not a poem, despite what 'experts' say.

How about this:

AN ODE TO REASONS WHY I'M NOT LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS GAME
Ripped off by Morkel

We suck, we suck, much more than a little bit,

The game is on delay there, 9:30 is bull shit.

He'll force himself to watch it, it'll probably be a clanger,

That uncreative Wallace, the useless bloody Ranga.

Top stuff there, Morkel!
