Round 21 Discussion

Penrith have made some very smart decisions in terms of who to let go and who not to let go, they let Moylan go and at the time I am sure a few fans were questioning that decision (this was well before Cleary or Luai showed their quality in the NRL) .. but as time has gone on it's proven to be a great decision.

They also let go Campbell-Gillard, again at the time.. big call but at the end of it all, it's been the right call. They've also pinched a few good ones from other clubs, mainly Kikau from NQ and Capewell from Cronulla on a cheap contract (their 2 starting edge forwards), throw in Koroisau there too.

Then obviously their juniors have come through exactly how they would have liked them to, they've done it all perfectly but as always unless you have a sustained culture of churning through superstars you only get a 2-3 year window to get it done and I reckon this is probably the comp they need to win otherwise a few of their more developed players are at that stage where they've been exposed and other clubs will be making inquiries.

They've made all the right decisions and have a team with the perfect mix of talent and experience but it won't count for shit if they can't win the comp this year.

Did anyone take notice of the 18 young Panthers? No one bothered with any of them either all the way through to NRL. How’d that happen?

That’s the point they had noticed them and didn’t care, Storm sign Hughes- what the Blackhawks fullback that’s been to two NRL clubs and can’t get a run?

If anyone had said we should offer him 700k now because I see a awesome half in him I would have laughed.
You're talking about the past... my post was about R&R trends moving forward and whether they might start taking notice of who is in Melbourne's ISC teams given they have established a track record of picking and developing players through that system.

Recruiters I'm assuming do the bulk of their work on the juniors coming through and trying to bring them into the system. Any young guy who wasn't any good is cast aside, but the young guys they noticed but weren't able to pick up probably get tracked... the Walsh's, Fifita's, etc. Storm appear to thrive on picking up those guys who get cast aside or the ones who didn't necessarily build up the massive profile through their juniors.

Given how successful the storm have been recently with players coming through their ISC, I wonder if R&R teams will start taking notice of who is coming through the falcons, etc. and see check if those guys that were cast aside might actually have something

You were talking about Harry's 2018 and 2019, and that a team could've offered him a contract back then. Given him and now Hynes have come through basically unnoticed until they hit NRL, I would think that an R&R team would at least want to start taking notice of who they've got coming through given the storm generally have a knack of picking decent talent before they've hit the prime time.

Paps is on mega unders, I don't care what he's really "worth", all that matters to employees and managers is what they could get elsewhere. He's at least 200k per year unders. Hughes was offered huge money from the Warriors, re-signed for 3 years at, at least 200k unders per year. Addo-Carr magically extended for years and years at 400k when he was easily the best winger in the game. Grant stayed in reserves and signed on for 4 years with no obvious hope of playing first grade for at least 3 years.

There's plenty of examples, heck they even managed to take Coates, a rep player to go there for supposedly under what he could have got if he just stayed where he was, in a cheaper to live city.

Once or twice is a coincidence or luck, over and over again, something stinks. Even the Roosters lose players they want to keep like Latrell, but Storm manage to sign all these incredibly loyal blokes.

I think they are staying for less to win grand finals. Cant agree with you about Paps though mate. I'd be spewing if we paid a player whos only really performed to a consistent level for just over a year more than about $650k. My personal take is they have a group who will take a little less because of what they have built down there, and their younger guys have been willing to wait in line. Like i said before, they remind me of what used to happen here when players used to stay on unders because we had a great coach, Culture and we used to win things. If the Storm were like the Dragons, i bet they would lose a hell of a lot of players.

Some folks on this forum were losing their minds when the Broncos didn’t sign him over summer
To be honest, he looked impressive last year, and Broncos had nothing at fullback (and still have nothing particularly impressive now).

I didn't have an issue with the Broncos passing on Allan, but I thought he'd be a good fit for the Bulldogs. I didn't take into account that Barrett is an ordinary coach who never persists with anything long enough. I still think he should be their fullback and they should continue working on their attacking shapes, I don't think Barrett has done a good job with him.

With that said, I don't think he was the type of player who was going to improve the Broncos situation. The club was going through an upheaval and to bring a player like Allan who was still just a fringe first grader wouldn't have been fair on him.

Some fans on here tried to frame it as Isaako vs. Allan when really it was Isaako vs. Isaako & Allan. I'd rather have one potential liability than two. With that said as well, Isaako has had a better season than Allan.

Might be an unpopular opinion but if I'm the titans I'd seriously consider sending Holbrook packing and bringing in Wayne for the next 2 years.

Holbrook hasn't done a shocking job at the tits but just watching them and looking at their roster they have a serious football team there somewhere.

I think Wayne would really take them to the next level with young Sexton coming throguh and then Brimson at the back and the strike of Fifita and big Tino.

I just dont know if Holbrook has what it takes and Wayne is looking for a new home next year.

Fifita better watch his diet he’ll lose his speed soon enough….the Dave Taylor comparisons keep getting closer.
That's what I thought. He looks way bigger at the moment than I remember and not in a good way. He's got fat rolls on the back of his neck.

Wayne would love to go there as an ultimate **** you to the Broncos the bitter old prick... but as long as tallis and meninga are part of/running the (comedy) show he won't be going there

I love what Holbrook is doing with Fifita as far as persisting with him off the bench.. a lot of weaker coaches would’ve quickly rewarded Fifita with his starting spot back after a couple of bulldozing tries.. Making Fifita really work for it is a great move.

Sexton looks pretty comfortable at NRL level, if they're not resigning Taylor for next year they should give him a run with Fogarty when he's fit
