Round 21 - Sea Eagles vs Broncos - Post Match Discussion

Had to laugh at how nonchalantly Yvonne said at half time "rest Hodges for the finals".

Locky kinda paused on the spot knowing full well we wont make it.

I don't think Hoff is as bad as most are making out, since moving back to Fullback he has improved. I wouldn't be against playing him on the win in attack but fullback in defence next season to help keep Milf fresh for attacking.

Did nobody notice how well Barbe played at 5/8? I'm gonna take that as a credit to him since nobody is whinging about him.

i did say i think he started really well. thought he was getting some confidence. copped a knock in teh first half and went quiet. after that he seemed to just hand it off and didnt offer too much.

it seems like he wants really badly to get involved but cant really find his place or timing with the rest of them.

Fullback in defense? Which puts a yawning gap on our outside edge which Milford won't fill because he would be defending on the line.

Hunt still has a fair way to go, until he is in that top echelon of half backs in the game. but he has had a good first full season in the role.

the main areas he need's to work on to become a world class halfback.

kicking game - just not good enough for a top half

closing out games - should come with experience, but needs to close out games better. especially when we're leading. in particular by kicking for the corners, or touch and strangle the opposition out of the game.

fading out of games - tends to fade in and out of games too much, needs to be the go-to man for the full 80 mins

Long term it may work out better for us and Hunt that he is having those issues this season, hopefully sort it out and in 2015 sparks can fly with Milf/Barba/Hunt moving the team around.

Very happy with Ben. Reed went well, too. Hoffman strong but still needs to bloody look to pass...

Barba has been improving each week in the 6. he seems to be gaining more confidence and lifting his performances, I certainly hope Bennett keeps him there, with Milford at 6. if Bennett decides to bring Boyd from the Knights to play 6, we will go back to having Hunt have to do all the play making him self, because Boyd won't be able to help him out (similar situation to Hoffman at 6)

Hoff is very solid in defence and being at fullback for it allows him to slide left or right following the play and assisting either edge.

I am extremely disappointed in this side. I love my league and the broncos but lately its just been a chore to watch them play.

I'm tired of seeing forced passes or plays that lead to mistakes or turnovers.

Also IMO it seems as though certain players play for themselves rather than the team.
If we lost every week but played as a team and as best we could id still be happy but the broncos should be better than this.

Loosing sucks!!!

i was wondering why barba wasnt doing more 5th tackle kicks. he's shown throughout the year hes very good at placing a kick in the ingoals when needed yet he rarely got the ball on teh last. makes no sense.

I actually think he's pretty inconsistent in that department.

I remember his first few kicks were really good but then there was a string that gifted the opposition an easy 20m tap before he got it right around the time of the New Zealand game.

I don't think the grubber was on tonight. At least not in the situations where the Broncos used them, the play should have been the mid-field or cross-field kick with the odd run into the corner and smash them with defence routine.

Sorry, but I can't help being pessimistic.
Hoffman needs to pass and not go for glory every single fucking time. Hunt was absolutely shit. Hodges was shit before he got fucking injured again....seriously, he might need to consider retiring. Parker was shit, can't kick, barely any leadership, stupid errors. Copley, fantastic in attack, horrible in defense. Lowrie is dead weight. Gillett has been crap since the beginning of origin. McCullough has been ordinary and not his high pace tackling machine since the start of the year. Granville on for what felt like 10 seconds (blame griffin for that). Glenn can't break a line even if he was given a battering ram.

Some positives, barba, Reed and Hannant were ok, vidot was great, Maguire was excellent...more than likely beefing up his showreel as he goes to market.

I still can't help but rage that we lose spectacularly with such a good team on paper.

I JUST DONT GET IT!!!!

Player wrap up from tonight.

1) Hoffman, was good again tonight. He made several incisive runs and was a touch unlucky to have the ball stripped from him early on. Again he made no errors at the back and is playing in a much more suited position. Wing or full back is definitely his go...
2) Vidot, strong yards and carries from his own half again, but we need more from him than just that. He needs to develop his game now to the next level. Line breaks, and points/try's are needed form wingers in first grade these days.
3) Copley, He was a standout again, admittedly he made a few errors but he was hardly to blame as the rubbish ball he was getting doesn't help his cause. He need more quality ball and not just throw it to him and hope he pulls a miracle out.
4) Hodges, limited minutes through injury so no comments.
5) Reed, lacks class and skill but has a crack. Still not sure why he replaced Kahu though... Reed must be the slowest winger since daryl halligan.
6) Barba, dear oh dear..... His defense was woeful, he runs backward and away form the oncoming attacking play. i bet copley was relieved when he switched sides and didnt have to tackle for barba as well.... I will admit he thew a nice ball near the eagles line but other than that his touches were very very ordinary... The ball he threw into the tenth row of the hill was something out of a benny hill show.
7) Hunt, this confuses me here. he just looks like he has lost all confidence and somehting is on his mind. Not sure what is happening with him at the moment.
8) Moose, well he is really turning into the heart and soul of the club. Every week is the same with him no matter what, he runs bloody hard and tackles all day. His form is really good but is lacing real suport at the moment. The club need to keep him and cant afford to lose a player like him.
9) Macca, he tackles and tries hard but he offered nothing out of dummy half. His passing game is slow and he doesnt get the team rolling with quick movement out of dummy half. Kicking early in the tackle count into the wind was an odd choice too...
10)Parker, playing out of position again tonight. He was a bit off his game but you now he doesn't give up... Hopefully he can go back to 13 next week.
11) Glenn, Well, not much to say either way, steady without really doing anything to much.
12) Gillett, ever since the origin series he has looked alt and I think he must be still carrying an injury. He looks tired and slow at the moment, if he was a racehorse he would be having a spell right now.
13) Thaiday, Needs to be moved back to his preferred edge on a permanent basis where he can target the smaller players and get a quick play the ball. Also give hunt something decent to pass too in attack. His half time interview was interesting too, i know he has always had a weird body shape, but it looked as though he has been filling up on the colonel during the week...
Bench, Lowrie has limited ability but is whole hearted, cant be grudge his commitment when he is on the filed. Hannant was good off the bench again tonight which makes me wonder why he isnt starting in the run on with moose in the front row??? Granville, limited minutes again, question needs to be asked why play a sub hooker for 5 minutes ad use one of your bench spots up. Oates, I have a huge wrap on him but playing on the wing to fill a gap was no fault of his. I still think he would have been better used elsewhere and leave reed on the wing and roll glenn into the centres. Oates is not being developed to hispotential at the moment.

It's definitely time to drop one of Thaiday/Glenn/Gillett to the bench, move Parker back to lock and start with McGuire and Hannant.
