I want Michael Purcell part of our squad next year. He should be a pretty handy winger

Too slight. If Marmin Barba couldn't crack it in a first grade side playing the same style than Purcell won't. His game suits what they do and that level but he would get man handled playing first grade on the wing.

How does he cope in Qld Cup

Because it is a lesser level and the Jets style is unique and very much suited to his play. I am a big fan of his. I played against him when he was still out in the country but his style just wouldn't cut it in first grade. Barba was a similar player probably even more beef on him but he never took the leap.

When defending at half, Hunt always goes high to wrap the ball up and slow the runner down, either rasslin' them to the ground like a drop bear, or clinging on and waiting for the cavalry.

At hooker, he gets to go low like Macca as the defence is more compressed and the middle forwards are responsible for wrapping the ball up. This is why Nikorima has been serviceable at hooker during his time, as well as Marshall in his limited minutes.

This. Without him doing that, the amount of line breaks against us would be huge.

With Thaiday reportedly being our "bench Hooker", I can't help but wonder if this might be a good opportunity to start the Oates --> Backrower transition..

He'd obviously have to start on the bench until he gets his fitness & size back up to scratch, but I could see it working. It's probably dependant on Mead/Pearson/Opacic not being complete trash on the left wing though, which seems unlikely. Still an intriguing idea, he could come on at around the 30 minute mark for Glenn and just play the remainder of the game, with Glenn coming back on in the middle for his 2nd stint.

8. Sims
9. Hunt
10. Blair
11. Glenn
12. Gillett
13. McGuire

14. Thaiday
15. Pangai Jr
16. Ofahengaue
18. Oates

Personally, i think Oates needs to stay on the wing for a couple more seasons before he makes the transition to the forwards.

He is still a bit green to be trying to make his way in the middle of the ruck.

Especially now with moga leaving I think we need Oates to continue to be our backline metre eater and getting back to his high light reel tries would be nice too

Corey Oates to make shock return for Brisbane against Gold Coast in Round 22

THE Broncos have revealed how close Corey Oates came to season-ending surgery as the hulking winger prepares for a shock return in Saturday night’s derby against the Titans.

Oates was named 18th man for the M1 derby but he trained strongly in place of former Titans flyer David Mead, who was originally named in the starting side.

Oates has endured a torrid past month with the winger admitted to hospital after battling a staph infection which threatened to prematurely end his season.

But the 22-year-old has made a better-than-expected recovery and will be given the green light to face the Titans if he trains well at the captain’s run.

Broncos medicos said they initially had no idea how long Oates would be sidelined and teammate Sam Thaiday revealed the winger almost went under the knife on his infected hips.

“To be honest, you will hear the full story one day from him but he was really, really sick,” Thaiday said.

“To the point where he could have needed major surgery.

“He’s a player we like to give a bit of stick to but this time Corey was telling the truth (about his condition).”

Back-rower Matt Gillett said Oates’ return would give Brisbane some punch on kick returns as they look to bounce back from last week’s shock loss to the Eels.

“It’s been a long journey for him,” Gillett said.

“He’s been out for a while and had to do the hard yards again to get his fitness back but there’s no better way to get back into it than going out and playing.

“You can do all your fitness but your game fitness is the most important thing.

“Fingers crossed he has pulled up OK and he will hopefully be named in the side this week.

“He is a close friend of mine. To not know what was going on was a bit scary for everyone. In that hospital bed, sitting around by yourself would have been scary but I’m glad it’s something they have got on top of.”

While Oates’ comeback is promising, there was a minor scare when veteran forward Alex Glenn suffered a head knock after a nasty collision with a Broncos teammate midway through yesterday’s session.

A dazed Glenn briefly left the field for treatment but returned to finish the session and is expected to take his place against the Titans.

“He’s all right, he thought he may have got a small cut to his eye,” Gillett said.

“But he finished training and hopefully that contact stuff can hold him in good stead for the game.”

Former Origin enforcer Thaiday again had some brief stints at hooker and said he is ready to play a back-up role for new first-choice rake Ben Hunt.

“Maybe we are playing silly buggers, maybe we are trying to mess with the Titans’ heads,” Thaiday quipped.

“It’s tough there (at hooker).

“You get your hands on the ball a fair bit and are always in the play. If I get the chance to play there, I will have a bit of fun with it.”

Purcell would do just fine. He is taller than Marmin, and he could put a little size onto his frame better than Barba. Whether he could take the next step and establish himself in Nrl is a different story. I think he would be worth a gamble personally. Wouldnt cost a great deal, ans could come on well in our system.

Oates in the centres wouldn't work really. When he has kick returns I have never seen him side step once just straight. When he gets the ball on the wing he just runs straight no side step or coming back on the inside. When your in the centres you want to create room for your winger and I don't think he can achieve that running straight every time. Though that's exactly why he's suited for the second row running them hard straight block plays. I would like to see him return on the bench and drop Thiday.

Oates in the centers would be a Gene Miles type player ... IMO would be a revelation there with some time in the position.

Now is not even remotely the right time for moving him from the back line.

we are currently very strong in the back row with Gillett, TPJ, Su'A, Glenn, this new ESL signing (maybe Bird next year depending where Bennett plans to play him) etc.

no where near as good depth in the back line. move Oates and your next best option would be Pearson (who you have been calling to be dropped for weeks)
