Great, another preseason of the bachelor while the coaching staff dither about which of 4 players will be a selected in a crucial position. Last year was 5/8 and this year is fullback apparently.

It's going to be Walsh.

Herbie is no doubt going to play in the WC, along with Cobbo, so they're going to have a shortened pre-season and Kevvie has already indicated that's going to work against them because he wants whoever is playing fullback to have a full pre-season there.

I don't think this Herbie wanting to play fullback thing is as serious as people are making it out. I think he's keen to play fullback, like any back would, but I think he'll be just as fine playing centre for another season.

Kurt Capewell:
"We’ve had a pretty good year until round 20. There was probably some cracks we looked over while we were winning. We got exposed a couple of weeks and it’s kicked us while we were down. We kept losing confidence. It’s only simple things. They are little things in our game that you don’t really see when you’re winning."
“Unfortunately it takes a loss to learn sometimes and that’s happened. We need to learn from it, move on to this week and put in a good performance. We’ve got a great opportunity that a lot of teams would beg to have. We’re going to take it with both hands.”
“We’ll just focus on winning. We can’t leak points. When we were playing really well we were a defence-focused team. We’ll go back to that and the attack can handle itself. We’ve got superstars that can score tries from nothing. We won’t worry about putting on too many points, as long as we don’t let any in.”
“It would be disappointing to miss the finals. It was a goal of mine when I came to the club. We’ve come a long way this year. We’ve still got the opportunity to go out there and make the finals so that’s how we’re looking at it.”

Why did he only sign for a year?

As much as I think Herbie would bring something different to Fullback and probably be really good there, Walsh will be the 1.
Herbie at fullback Reece at 6 and Mam off the bench could work if we had a 80 min elite 9 but we don't.

Uncertainty about whether this club is going to be the club it should be. He wants to be playing finals footy, he doesn't want to be at a struggling club.

If we aren't a finals team by the end of 2023, he's gone.

I've never heard him say any of those things but I've heard him say he wants to play fullback next season.

No idea how and in spite of Kevvie, we finally got there and get Peeks another game.

Jensen out. Piakura onto the extended bench.

Not sure how we convinced the NRL to allow that.
The NRL is really sketchy around this.

Most clubs only announce 22 players, although I'm pretty sure they're allowed to announce 24. Even so, we've seen plenty of occassions where clubs have selected somebody from outside that 24 as a last minute replacement. Kepaoa comes straight to mind, but even then there were instances where the 18th man wasn't named on Tuesday.

To me it takes the piss out of the whole concept to begin with.

Didn't the whole concept of naming a squad of 22 have something to do with betting markets and allowing the punters to know exactly who would take the field?

Payne ripping in at training. Might wanna try that in a game, you'd think.
Was he offloading the ball as well maybe he might want to try that in a game as well.

Yeah the whole point was to have transparency for the punters and fantasy coaches. Originally they were going to be strict and if you didn't name an adequate replacement too bad. However the NRL gave clubs the wriggle room like unforseen circumstance, so if a player who was 50/50 on Tuesday suffered another set-back that was enough for them to bring in another player outside the 22, defeating the purpose.

It was like the development player situation where clubs had to have exhausted every option before they could play a development player. In the end it basically just amounted to if the first two players on the depth chart were unavailable it was free reign. It didn't matter if the club had played another player out of position, they could bring in said development or train & trial player and it was all hunky dory.

Even when they extended the squads to 24 this year for COVID, clubs were still announcing players outside of it at the last minute.
