Before kick off, I noticed that Corey Parker had the entire team huddled and seemed to be laying down the law as far as what his expectations were from each player.
It's something I rarely see or notice in the pre-game but it demonstrated to me how serious the boys were taking this game and filled me with a lot of confidence.
The first half was rather interesting.
I thought the Broncos did well to establish a 24-4 lead but still felt like there was plenty of team for St. George to comeback and knew that the referees would do everything in their power to make it a contest.
I just didn't realise they would go that far with it.
It was disgusting and I've already harped about the sin-bin but the other soft penalties, video referee calls, suspect pass calls all had a tremendous influence on the game.
In the end, the Broncos did well to hang in there and once the pendulum swung and Merrin who is prone to trying a little bit too hard at times came up with the mistake the boys needed and when the game was on the line who was it but our other co-captain and one of our best strike weapons combining to put the match away.
I saw Matty slam the ball all the way up in Row 629 and I knew we were home then.
A couple of points...
- I'm usually one of the first to complain, so I'd like to personally congratulate Parker's kicking tonight. It proved the difference tonight and had a positive bearing from the Broncos end. A real captain's knock in that regard from Corey.
- I thought tonight's game was the perfect encapulation of Vidot. Some great plays, some bad plays and then just some bizarre plays. I don't know what the future holds in store for him but I definitely appreciate all that he's provided us fans so far in 2014.
- Didn't like how the defence held off on Marshall. One of the best plays of the second half was Gillett rushing up on Marshall and shutting down a sweeping play on the left-side early in the half.
- Another step forward for Marty. I thought his runs got the biggest cheers at the ground and there were a lot of whispers of 'who is this guy?' I was quite critical of him last week for his inability to get onside and affect a tackle on Sims but he's been doing his best to make up for it. I just hope he announces himself against Melbourne, that's the task for him and a lot of players in this squad.
Finally, I just wanted to point out how great it's been to return to Suncorp on a more regular basis this season. To be there live, free of commentary with a unique perspective of the game, surrounding by all sorts of people is fantastic and I believe the club is doing a lot to improve the match-day experience. Hopefully they keep at it and it would be great to see some BHQ members become apart of that cheer squad area so we can keep a loud Broncos chant going.
